I have just finished my dissertation and I am keen to celebrate, though I would like to mark the occasion with something better than cheap beer. What is everyone's favourite cocktail recipe? Surely you have a suggestion for me Di...

Menelaus Darcy, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this site looks promising: http://www.webtender.com/

as far as cocktails are concerned, i like a nice long island iced tea or margherita. yummmmm...

katie, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pete what was that thing you made for me at the Eurovision Party? That was very nice. It involved midori.

Tom, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

May I present the Brandy Alexander? 1/2 shot dark creme de cacao 1/2 shot brandy Splash of chilled cream

SHAKE and serve -lovely.

Or: Will's Herculean Mint Julep (AKA dewlap) You will need:

2 cups granulated sugar 2 cups water (branch water is ideal) Fresh Mint Crushed Ice Kentucky Bourbon (2 ounces per serving)

Fill a glass with crushed ice, then add 1 tablespoon of mint syrup (you can make a simple mint syrup* by boiling sugar and water together for 5 minutes and cooling) and 2 ounces of bourbon (or whisky if preferred). Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost outside of cup or glass. Garnish with a fresh mint sprig. (Can also frost rim of glass with sugar if you have a sweet tooth)

Or even: the good old Tequila Sunrise, (tequila+OJ+grenadine) but for god's sake pour the Grenadine - slowly - down a TILTED glass to get the colour right!

So, a fruity one, a minty one, a creamy one. Congrats on finishing your dissertation!

I wuv proper black russians, ie just vodka and kahlua, also white russians, mmmmm.

Dr peppers are erm interesting - half pint lager, half pint coke, drop a measure of amaretto in hey presto a pint of alcohol tasting remarkably like dr pepper yum.

But the best bar none = Liquid Cocaine! ask anyone at our chalet party at ATP this year.

chris, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Liquid Cocaine?!

WTF?

Will McKenzie, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Will, don't listen to the nasty man. I have been consistently unwell for six months after I listened to him.

Tim, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

take a lemon, nice chunky slice, put it in a tall glass with a lot of ice. a good shot of nice quality gin. fill up with tonic water. :-)

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh YEAH black russians! bring it on!

and i "experimented" with the Power Shandy so beloved by ricky t and sarah... god i was sick the next day!

katie, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

liquid cocaine (aka Timmy's ruin) = make up a batch of espresso, pour over a lot of ice into a suitable container (at atp this was a teapot!) add equal amounts of vodka and a couple of spoons of sugar. Mix and pour, knock back with style and grace........ lose all sense of style and grace, go slightly mental.

chris, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Slippery Nipple. Baileys and Zambuca. Very good for not being able to see/talk to people.

Ronan, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And to think I was going to stick with rusty nails and my old favourite the kamikaze. As a coffee addict I am particularly enamoured with the idea of liquid cocaine, but then again its all looking pretty good.

Then again I've been to hell, gin when the only mixer is coca cola. At least it made me engagingly honest :)

Menelaus Darcy, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Liquid Cocaine fills me with excitement, desire, but mostly fear. Terrible, terrible fear.

And I thought you seemed such a nice bloke, Cabbage. There's a venomous streak in you, to be sure! ;-)

Will McKenzie, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

May I recommend Liquid Cocaine with vodka jelly on the side?

Madchen, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Will, there is nothing venomous about helping your friends get very very pissed *and* stay awake! The fear is natural, and adds a little spice to the proceedings.

And Madchen is right btw, vodka jelly slurped from the bowl adds the top hat to the whole thing.

chris, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can I be in your gang? Can I play, too?

Will McKenzie, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Run away. Run away! Save yourself.

Tim, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you know you loved it Tim, we have photographic evidence somewhere too!

chris, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a feeling I shall regret this profoundly.

I'm gonna try one Friday night, London Indie USA.

Now I feel dirty.

Will McKenzie, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Get a Long Island but have it made with cherry juice instead of cola. You won't regret it!

Ally, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Regretting drinking something?

I'm through the looking glass now.

Ronan, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Try The Dirty Vicar: a third each of Kahlua, cream, and Jameson with grated nutmeg on top.

It's basically a Brandy Alexander with Jameson instead of Brandy, but I invented it so I feel obliged to push it.

DV, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Will, I've never seen one advertised in a pub! oh, apart from some swanky one somewhere in the west end once. You'll have to wait til Atp.

chris, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Was it Alan Partridge who had "the ladyboy"? I remember a friend asking for it in some place, and they wouldn't make it for him. fools.

Ronan, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ladyboy= lager, gin, bailey's chaser? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Will McKenzie, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That reminds me - has anyone been on an 'Only Fools and Horses' night out? You pick a character from the show and drink according to that character. Woe betide whoever picks 'Del Boy' - I was on Bailey's and Lucozade all night.

Fuck.

Will McKenzie, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

grasshoppers and manhattans and pink ladies. DO NOT ATTEMPT AT HOME !

anthony, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"cherry juice"? I'll try grenadine.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not the same effect at all. You put the juice from the marachino cherries in it, and then load it with cherries. It's alright with grenadine but it's way better if you take the juice that's in the cherry jar. It's my drink, I invented it, and quite frankly you doing that besmirches my invention.

Ally, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anything with rhum. Mejotte was the latest concoction I tried.... and approved.

Helen Fordsdale, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what about a car bomb? a shot of whiskey dropped down into a pint of guiness and then slammed down.

Samantha, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Shots into pints, you say? Now we're getting somewhere...

Tom, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh god that is so nasty.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Or there's the Depth Charge, where a shot glass of vodka (or brandy or whiskey or whatever) is dropped into a pint of beer. It is vile.

Andrew L, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sake bombers are of course a shot of sake thrown into a big huge glass of Japanese beer...talk about nasty

Ally, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll just admit here that I'm a sucker for girlie drinks aka "pantie peelers". Sweet + alcohol = heaven. Cider... rum & coke... melon margaritas.. abortions (Bailey's cream, vodka, and grenadine)... tiki drinks... you name it.

Besides my love for board games, sugary alcoholic drinks is another area where I'll admit I'm a total femme.

(I don't mind beer at all.. but I can't have more than three at a time. It's feels like eating wood-flavored fudge after a while. The only exception is Pabst -- which was the ultimate pizza beer -- and now they've closed down shop. :( )

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

White trash variants of cocktails can hit the spot, too.

Classic:
White trash russian = chocolate milk plus vodka.

Dud:
White trash bloody mary = V8 plus tequila

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've seen many patrons of our fave dive bar drinking V8 and beer, mixed. not sure about this one.

Samantha, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You MUST go for the classic gin martini.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am of course looped on the White Russian Milkshake.

Vodka, Kahlua, Vanilla Haagen-Dasz (or the like).

Drinking game: drink along with Dallas. You do not want to wind up as Sue Ellen or you're fucked.

suzy, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dan is speaking lies , the only thing gin is good in is tonic and continreu

anthony, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

teh combustible edison

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Brian, did I hear you right when you said that cider is a girly drink? Fantastic!

Tom's right... the armadillo is the only way to go.

Tim, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sorry i didn't post when this thread was relevant, Menelaus Darcy. if i had had the foresight i would have serenaded you

"if you like pina coladas/getting caught in the rain/if you're not into yoga/if you have half abrain/if you like making love ta midnite/in the dunes on the cape/you're the lady i've looked for/come with me and escape."
