TS: Scarves vs. toques!

When winter comes around, I start wearing a scarf like it's a security blanket. Even when it's not that cold out -- why not wear a scarf when you can get away with it?

Toques are a little more problematic because of "toque-hair" but a good toque can change a semi-attractive person into a SEX GOD, which is something only the best of scarves can do.

So, scarves, toques, or some other winter apparel? Which is your favorite?

(Also, for those who don't know, "toque" is a crazy Canadian word for a winter hat, like the one I'm wearing in this picture.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never EVER (well maybe a few times) worn a scarf.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I lost my toque in the winter of 1989. I'm still sad. I dig scarves and also mittens, for whatever reason.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

And I have quit the tuque (accepted Canadian Press style guide spelling), since it was drying out my scalp and I would rather have frostbite than dandruff.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I LOVE scarves. It will be weird wearing hats this winter because I've been wearing my hair up all the time. Hmm.. How does that work?

I especially like stripey scarves.

I am not very interested in the ones that look skinny and roll up on themselves.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Sacrves are easier to make.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, "tuque" makes more sense (since it rhymes with "pook" more or less). Anyway I also love dandruff so naturally I think you're making a big mistake.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I think toque is the stupidest word ever. Can't you canadians do anything right?

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Toques aren't that hard, though -- my bandmate knitted a toque for Anthony and a scarf for me.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I like toques though I didn't know they were toques. I had a brown one which I can't find, so I stole Sarah's dark red one. And I like scarves.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I want mittens with snowflakes on them. Make this happen.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never heard that word before. Do you pronounce it like "toke" as in "the inhalation of marajuana"?

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it rhymes with "pook", more or less.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, you have to take Canadian vowels into account.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

the 'o' is pronounced like the 'o' in 'about.'

*ducks*

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris, you're beautiful.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

teeny = Lucy Van Pelt ;-)

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It rhymes with Nanook.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, all the Canadians I heard were saying "a boat" rather than "a boot".

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, now I want this one. I like the balls.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahaahaha balls.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeez! Just because we don't say a-bowt we keep taking shit! I LIKE IT THAT I TALK FUNNY!

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Darrah from Survivor to thread!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

No one ever really pronounces it 'tomahto,' do they?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

FIVE GOLDEN TOQUES

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it that you talk funny too!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

No one ever really pronounces it 'tomahto,' do they?

My mom does - but she's from New Zealand.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

4 pounds of backbacon

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

In a tree.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn x-posts.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

tuque or Toque rhymes with "fluke". Although I like them and have a number of them, I sport an old RCMP hat with ear flaps when it's -30.

danielle g. (danielle g.), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Took. (hee hee) *Took* (eehee hee hee) TOOOOOK!

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

my tuque matches my gloves. wink, wink.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

You don't wear a tuque! You're just saying you have hairy palms.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

cuz I jerk off all the time!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

That explains the constant misspellings.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh, I don't really. Hardly ever, in fact.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Took. (hee hee) *Took* (eehee hee hee) TOOOOOK!

-- Jeanne Fury

You people are hopeless and in need of a linguistics class.

danielle g. (danielle g.), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Hardly ever misspell? I've noticed that about you.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I knackered apparent a while ago. had three As.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you keep the Kleenex when you have a particularly good misspelling?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

is that a Catcher in the Rye reference?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's Portnoy's Complaint.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

You will never see me wear a toque.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i missread this thread as "TS: Scarves vs. Tongues!" HA!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, OK, just put the gun down, sorry I even brough it up!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

kephm, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

now this thread is just reminding me of CAVEMAN STARRING RINGO STARR

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
People were talking about being cold so I thought I'd revive.

Hats AND scarves are classic. Gloves are necessary but kind of boring.

Despite this thread and its many explanations, I am very confused as to the pronunciation of "toque".
