Hair Color Advice!

i dyed my hair black this past weekend. i used feria, in particular i used starry night. which had a woman on the front. the ones with the guys on the front negated the "comfort" one might feel in buying a male-sponsored box by only having really gay colors like "purple haze" (black with purple highlights! PURPLE!) and "red desert."

i'm fairly pleased with the results, though the color does seem to be fading already. what do you ladies suggest for my future attempts at hair coloration? and what colors should i explore?

fred solinger, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Puce!

Nick, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

freddy - when i dye my hair black, tis also with feria, a trick i picked up from my ex...but it shouldnt be fading already...i was deep black the last time for a good month or two...

jess, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

For one, don't wash your hair for a day or so after dying it -- you can really fade the color out that way. I also think "foot sex" can also have a detrimental effect on hair follicles.

You should post a new picture, so we can see your new gothy 'do. I was so on the money with your aicon... ;-)

Nicole, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nick: your response may have been jocular (may have been) and yet there actually IS puce hair color! crazy shit, man!

secondly, there's nothing wrong with foot sex. it's all about making the foot feel good.

nicole: what kind of savage do you take me for? not was my hair? is this instruction on the box anywhere?? this may explain the fade. and your aicon entry sounded like the demon spawn of dan and brian, what with all of that wax trax! nonsense.

fred solinger, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course it doesn't have instructions as to avoiding washing your hair for a day or two, most of them won't because the more often you wash your hair the more often you have to buy dye and the more money they make. However, living with a hair dye expert for two years might've rubbed off on you for fuck's sake.

Guys dying their hair is absolutely dud, I hate it cos they never do it right or worse they do those idiotic tips. Argh.

Ally, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to comment that I tried to dye my hair red last Saturday. It dyed about a centimetre at the roots red and the rest is black. I look like I'm a ginger with black roots showing rather than the other, more expected, way round. Chiz. To change my hair colour I would need to visit a HAIRDRESSER chiz. Or dump my head in a big bucket of BLEACH (cool)!

Sarah, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Guys dying their hair is absolutely dud, I hate it cos they never do it right or worse they do those idiotic tips. Argh.

Shut up, bitch. I dyed my hair red a year ago and it was a complete success.

Nick, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ahem - Ally: I dye my hair regularly and think it looks lovely. At the moment I am a very dark purple, but I was rather bright red for a while. My advice to stop fading is the wonderful Neutrogena Care For Colour range. Works a charm.

Paul Strange, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, that happened to me back when I was highlighting, my roots turned a completely different color than my hair when I got sick of it. It was weird cos you'd think the lighter and/or compromised bits would take color better than the healthy bits.

I dye my hair with Hydrience after a really disasterous experience with Feria, btw. Watch out for anything besides the black shades, they FUCK UP YOUR HAIR.

Ally, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm with Ally on this one. Leave your hair alone you nuts. Of course it shouldn't matter hugely to me what guys in general to their hair. I remember some guy I knew dying his hair black, it was red. It looked silly, and it also showed he wasn't too comfortable with his hair the way it was, which for some reason made me think less of him.

Ronan, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if i only envisioned that one day i would be dying my hair, perhaps i would've paid more attention to your coloration rituals. i do remember your misfortunes with feria, however, though i figured i'd be safe with basic black -- at the worst, my hair would be blue and i could live with that. or it could all fall out, which i wouldn't have minded either. i really could go either way.

paul: thank you for the tip!

nick: red?! i bet you looked very amorous!

fred solinger, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and your aicon entry sounded like the demon spawn of dan and brian, what with all of that wax trax! nonsense.

Heh. I knew it was you (being tipped off from certain ile postings) and knew the wax trax! stuff would tick you off. But you did look like that sort of dude, based on that picture.

Nicole, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't use Herbal Essences shampoo on dyed hair even if it is two for the price of one in Superdrug. Your newly dyed "starry night" (the one I used!) will run STRAIGHT down the plug hole. Neutrogena = GREAT even if you do not have dyed hair - great coincidence that when you next dye your hair that NEUTROGENA is two for the price of one in Superdrug.

Incidentally isn't SUPERDRUG an ace name for a shop?? I've only just realised. SUPERDRUG! Awyeah!

Actually, home bleaching. Reckon if I dipped the ends in a bottle of Flash or Toilet Duck that I could bleach them white?? That would ace! And also I would smell PINE FRESH! Advice, please.

Sarah, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Using toilet duck would result in extremely crispy hair. Which would be very amsuing for the rest of us, but probably not what you intended.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What about mixing some shampoo with white spirit and then washing your hair????

Oh dear, I'm feeling DANGEROUS today. Maybe I should just get an Afro Ken wig.

Sarah, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Any attempt to look like AfroKen is to be applauded. That's what fred should have done.

Nicole, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

TOILET DUCK!!! sarah, i love you for just MENTIONING toilet duck. as a child, it was my favorite household cleanser. and you know what? it still is.

fred solinger, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, you probably drink it -- it would explain so many things about you. Like liking Don Delillo.

Nicole, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't like like don delillo. sure, he's ruggedly handsome, but that's not really my type -- it reminds me too much of my own father.

toilet duck, if i recall correctly, is blue.

fred solinger, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not quite sure he'd like you either, but perhaps there would be a story in it far more interesting than White Noise.

Nicole, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fred, it can be GREEN or BLUE or PINK! Maybe it is also YELLOW when it is Lemon Fresh. But you are getting off the subject and that is should I mix it with shampoo and wash my hair in it, like, duh. Well actually I guess I'd have to leave it for a while. WOuld my hair fall out? I mean, I'd use conditioner AFTERWARDS.

God, I'm bored. POSEI POSEI POSEI.

Sarah, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Starry, my parents bath has a very rough surface since it was cleaned with Toilet Duck. Imagine what it would do to your hair!

Madchen, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with Ally only on the dyed tip front... otherwise, it is possible for guys with dyed hair to not look like idiots... or at least I hope my deep blue phase didn't make me look like an idiot.. (should I post a link and be judged?)

Right now though, I'm just happy with sticking to bleached rootsy hair. Haven't gotten compliments and no complaints yet.

Fred, not to scare you, since you only did this once, so not much to worry about.. but I've heard about some carcinogenic qualities of certain pure black dye... just be careful out there. (Like I should talk, but anyway)

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Me: Haven't gotten compliments and no complaints yet.

Excuse me. Only gotten compliments, and no complaints yet.

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

at least I hope my deep blue phase didn't make me look like an idiot.

Well there was that one night I had to force back the mob gathering outside the house who wanted to lynch you for crimes against hair art,but aside from that I think you were okay.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Post link and be judged!

I like hair. Hair hair. It's nice to stroke and run your fingers through and keeps you warm when running through the forest in a full moon. Oh sorry, that's fur and I changed into Oz. Oz should come back to Buffy. The one where he came back to Willow after taming his inner werewolf only to find out Willow has gone gayist (and also RUBBIDGE) was heartbreaking. I love Oz.

Sarah, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oz = grate, but def played out narrative- wise, except of course in fan-fiction slashland (boy-EE!! a gurl and her DOG hem hem)

I am still v.pro Willow'N'Tara as a concept, because of the moral tangles in re semi-non- scoobydom (not least becuz story- structurally willow needs a mirror- distraction from scoobydom that parallels buffy's w.dawn).

I can also explain away powerfully and convincingly why it is necessary storywise that Tara is somewhat tiresome and mimpy

mark s, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I shaved my fiance's head the other day. I'm not into guys fussing with their damned hair. YOU ARE GUYS STOP PREENING LIKE GIRLY GIRLS. ARRRRGH.

Sorry, I'm sexist.

Ally, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can also explain away powerfully and convincingly why it is necessary storywise that Tara is somewhat tiresome and mimpy

Please do! That ridiculous "HER FAMILY CALLED HER A DEMON!!!" which sure, SOUNDS "True Confessions" stylee ace storyline was just dull and boring. More of the strange Buffy/Spike dynamic please! Although I gave in and read the MBTV recaps so I KNOW that storyline gets amazingly ace and icky later on and STILL w/ ace funs to come in Season Six I anticipate. I see yr non scooby parallels fair enough. Do you think it's right that Giles can't form relationships? I mean there was Jen but she was killed by Angelus and that's quite right considering she was a FLIPPING HIPPY.

Oh yes I am also annoyed at Willows hair and HIPPY DRESSING. Same for you, Tara. She used to be so CUTE! We've always had fun with SMGs dressing (mayonnaise?) but Willow, it's beyond a joke.

Sarah, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i. scoobs (exc.willow obv) need to find her somewhat difficult to warm to; so do we, otherwise their difficulty wd just read as lam-o homophobia
ii. underlying this, it has to be an analog of UNDEALT-with homophobia (yes they are nice and kewl foax, down w.whoever you do: however, not to worry is not to care, and why-how wd they always already have been *informedly* down w.witches and/or lesbians: this wd just be bad sentimental writing)
iii. Hence Tara requires a subliminal personality problem, which non-Ww scoobs and we are genuinely in doubt abt: is it HER or is it US? Is she a bit, y'now, buggy, or are we horrible in-crowd ILE-type bigots?

Taking Sides: W&T's er wiccan dress sense vs Buffy's pastel vinyl rigs?

Giles had a hot black gf for ONE EPISODE ONLY (first of college season). Also I dimly recall backstory abt a broken heart back in college, which I dearly hope and pray THEY do not remember. English men on US TV are a dodgy enuff prop'n: English wimmin are a NIGHTMARE FROM WHICH WE WILL NEVAH WAKE (Steve Martin please acknowledge).

mark s, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I refuse to believe this has actually turned into a thread about Buffy the goddamned Vampire Slayer. It was so cool too, hair dye discussion.

BTW, Fred - black = bad decision, your skin tone is wrong for it, I was thinking about it.

Ally, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

All rightie, you asked for it. Brian the smurf. Tonight, PST, on the turgent "Hair Color Advice!" thread. Judge me.

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It dyed about a centimetre at the roots red and the rest is black. I look like I'm a ginger with black roots showing rather than the other, more expected, way round. I saw pictures of some Japanese rock band last week, I can't remember which, and they had black roots for an inch or two and then bright purple, red or orange hair. It was the best hair dye job I have ever seen in my life. I really wish I had black hair so I could do that.

There's a guy in my health class with light pink hair. It's lovely. I hate it when people bleach their hair, it looks terribly common and unnatural, but that pink is beautiful!

Maria, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Time to judge me
Bleached here. Blue hair here

(This marks the 4th time I've included a personal pic link on this here forum. Down to City Hall tomorrow I go to officially change my name to "Vain Mother Fucker")

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You're allowed to be vain because yrrr cute! I prefer the blonde. But the blue's cool too. Your hair is short enough that you can alternate on a regular basis so just do that.

toraneko, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

have you ever dreamt icey dreams in your bedroom?

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Brian

which do you prefer?

I'll be Vain Mother Fucker Too.

toraneko, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the 1987 one most. The enthusiasm! The eyeshadow! Ace. You blonde looks rather Britters.

As for Brian, hey! The blue is quite groovy! I'm very pleasantly surprised, do it again!! Again, again!

Sarah, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just voted 2001_03... I'm a sucker for glasses. :)

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(Willow looks v. ROWR in this week's TimeOut)

I Like Tara

Graham, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the blue as well...

Btw there's a rumor Oz might come back for the Season 6 Halloween episode.

Nicole, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Brian looks like Vince Vaughn.

Ally, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Speaking of hair, someone told me my new haircut makes me look like Molly Ringwald in Pretty in Pink. :-(

It was supposed to look all sleek and Louise Brooks-ish!

for you I would recommend 40 volume developer when you dye your eyelashes, don't be afraid if it stings a little, that's how you know it's working. Be sure to keep it on for the full 45 minutes and rub it in well at the end.

For haircolor info.:
for black hair coloring, Clairol Nice'n'Easy in Natural blue-black gives an awesome, super-shiny, totally unnaturally gorgeous haircolor...think Catherine Zeta-Jones or Pierce Brosnen glossy. For reds, Nutrisse Garnier in bright copper is perfect, but an orangey brighter than bright red. The Nutrisse garnier in dark brown mohagony is good for a nice dark brown. None of these colors will fade much if used with color shampoo. The blue-black is really spectacular and lasting, but you will have trouble bleaching it out if you wanna go blonde. These are just a few I remember being pretty good.

SO!

At the moment my hair is kind of a chestnutty brown with blonde highlights.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/Mandalion/forehead.jpg

Should I go dark brown? The reason I'm considering this is that lately my eyebrows have DARKENED and they are WAY darker than my hair... it looks weird.
