The mistake of not correctly identifying the possesive in the orignal question is causing me great pain. Continue.

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

the Black Eyed Peas cause me great pain, but I rarely gainsay anyone's intelligence for liking music I don't.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

It's basically a microism of every couple's strife. Featuring largely the vocal talent's of their token white girl. Yet, it is kinda affirming, maybe? Lyrics:

Shut up
Just shut up
Shut up [3x]
Shut it up, just shut up
Shut up
Just shut up
Shut up [3x]
Shut it up, just shut up

[Chorus]
We try to take it slow
But we're still losin control
And we try to make it work
But it still isn't the worst
And I'm craaazzzy
For tryin to be your laaadddy
I think I'm goin crazy

Girl, me and you were just fine (you know)
We wine and dine
Did them things that couples do when in love (you know)
Walks on the beach and stuff (you know)
Things that lovers say and do
I love you boo, I love you too
I miss you a lot, I miss you even more
That's why I flew you out
When we was on tour
But then something got out of hand
You start yellin when I'm with my friends
Even though I had legitimate reasons (bull shit)
You know I have to make them evidence (bull shit)
How could you trust our private lives girl
That's why you don't believe my lies
And quit this lecture

[Chorus]

Why does he know she gotta move so fast
Love is progress if you could make it last
Why is it that you just lose control
Every time you agree on takin it slow
So why does it got to be so damn tough
Cuz fools in lust could never get enough of love
Showin him the love that you be givin
Changing up your livin
For a lovin transistion
Girl lip so much she tryin to get you to listen
Few mad at each other has become our tradition
You yell, I yell, everybody yells
Got neighbors across the street sayin
“Who the hell?!?”
Who the hell?
What the hell's going down?
Too much of the bickering
Kill it with the sound and

[Chorus]

Girl our love is dyin
Why can't you stop tryin
I never been a quitah
But I do deserve betta
Believe me I will do bad
Let's forget the past
And let's start this new plan
Why? Cuz it's the same old routine
And then next week I hear them scream
Girl I know you're tired of the things they say
You're damn right
Cuz I heard them lame dame excuses just yesterday
That was a different thing
No it ain't
That was a different thing
No it ain't
That was a different thing
It was the same damn thing
Same ass excuses
Boy you're usless
Whhoooaaaa

[Chorus]

Stop the talking baby
Or I start walking baby
Is that all there is [repeat]

a serious question: do you think your day job has anything to do with your response to the song?

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

it occurred to me that it might, what with you being in a classroom full of kids telling each other to shut up all day long

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah that's a great painful song. nothing moronic about it -- my voice review sorta fawned over it.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm. .. i think it struck me more Matos based on my last relationship.

I really think it rings more true with adult relationships.

Anyone else? Bueller?

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

haha it struck you more Matos, probably because I'm telling people to shut up all the time!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

their token white girl > Isn't she half-Latino (or however you would say this)?

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I think Nathalie is right

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i didn't know this. She's blond and very brittany looking. And new so therefore seeming token-ish.

more thougts please.

(I still love the song)

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

The song is catchy. I find the girl annoying, since I don't remember her being part of the group several years ago when I last saw them on TV a lot. And Mandee recently told me that she used to be on 'Kids Incorporated' as Stacey--shockingly, I remembered this show and character...

sgs, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Its better than their last single. the way it begins is very funny but now but annoying on first listen. it grew on me.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

That's just a rash, Julio. ;-)

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not as good as "Let's Get Retarded."

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

This song is possibly their best single that isn't "Weekend".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you heard "Let's Get Retarded?"

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that a single?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think so. Shit. You did say single. Must learn to read.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like this song, it seems pretty fun/accurate/catchy etc

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked this song so much...I bought the record! Used! Gave it to my wife and daughter so they could listen to "Where Is the Love", every once in a while I put "Shut Up" on. It's a great song and great video too. No shame in yr game.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i like this song a lot but i just rediscoverd 'Joints & jams' also

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

'Hey Mama' is being used on the iPod adverts in case someone didn't realise

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Can I just ask - curious here - why do people post entire song lyrics? I mean, who reads them thinking "oh fascinating, shut up x 3, really" and "ooh another [chorus]"? They just take up a lot of useless space - not just Sam on this post here but loads of others do. And quite frankly unless it's the lyrics to Cheekah Bow Wow which are WELL WORTH READING I don't see the POINT!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, a VERSE, sure, we get it BUT THE WHOLE DAMN SONG LYRICS why why why WHY!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

That song has nothing on Trick Daddy's "Shut Up"

D Aziz (esquire1983), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

what about Madness?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, the madness one's great

... but the BEP song is wonderful. has been in my top 20 nearly all year.
