I'm finally getting one and I need to know which UK network is the best by tonight, and which ones are rubbish. I am clueless. Lead me out of ignorance, please.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

well, i'm on orange. they're ok. i mean, i think all the companies are a bit rubbish. most of them are doing free phones and other promos for xmas right now.

orange does match any other network's plan, although they don't advertise that much. probably best to figure out what your friends are on and get the same one?

orange's page with all the other plans on it is kind of hard to find. it's at http://www.orange.co.uk/cgi-bin/ovp/costs.pl

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm on the Virgin network and I have no complaints other than the fact that few other ppl seem to be, so I'm rarely able to take advantage of the cheaper calls to other Virgin phones.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Orange is cheap, but their customer service is shite. (Then again, find me a network which isn't shite at customer service?)

I'm on O2/BT, but I wouldn't reccomend them cause they keep changing my service plan and never tell me. Oh, and they spam me all the time with useless junk texts. bleurgh.

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Eh? I'm with them and never get any! And my service plan has never been changed although they occasionally call to "talk about their service plans" - always when I'm really busy so have never taken "advtange" of these lovely offers.

I DISrecommend T-Mobile to the power of abt nine-zillin though.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Orange has been fairly good to me, though they gave me a loyalty bonus of 60 free texts a month for a year, but then when I prove my loyalty by upgrading and getting a new 12 month contract, they took them away! Motherfuckers.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Starry, it's probably cause I was dumb and greedy and replied to the text message saying "if you reply to this text message with yer phone no and postcode, we will give you FIVE POUNDS FREE CREDIT!!!" thinking they'd never actually bug me. I don't get that many, they just come at really inconvenient times!

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Orange isn't suitable for me really as the reception is patchy and there is none whatsoever in my workplace, which as I need it for dealing with job applications and the like is a big problem. Even if quite a few of my friends are on Orange.

Is Vodafone any good?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

When I had Pay as you go I was on 02 who seemed alright. Now I just use my work phone all the time and don't pay much attention to cost etc.

I love it when you go to a foreign country BTW and there is an invisible war for the soul of your mobile so it changes operators about three times a day!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just bought my first ever mobile through Tesco Mobile and they seem pretty good, you can set up 'favourite' numbers to be 10p per minute, and most of my family are either on or going to move to Tesco so I can take advantage of all the cheap offers of numbers. Perfectly happy with them. I'd not go with either T-Mobile or Vodafone as they seem the worst by far.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, Tesco go through the O2 network so it's pretty comprehensive coverage.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt, if the biggest deal is reception at work, surely the best thing to do is ask your workmates what their respective reception is like. You've probably done this.

They're all much of a muchness. See who's offering the best special offer and go for that. And come back to us soon and ask us which handset you should get.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always been on Orange pay-as-you-go, so I'm not a hardcore mobiler with contractual shenanigans, so my opinion prob isn't worth much. I occasionally get calls from other operators (to my landline) trying to lure me over but when I tell them I average about 8p/day on calls/texts they lose interest.

Spent £20 on their text saver pack a few weeks back (apparently unusual for operators to offer deals like this to pay-as-you-goers?) = £5 call credit plus five free texts a day for a year.

Never a problem with reception but then I don't go Zone 7 orienteering or anything.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I keep meaning to get that Orange text saver pack - if like me you text a fair bit but rarely make long phone calls then it's a brilliant deal.

FIVE TEXTS A DAY FOR A YEAR FOR ONLY £15. That's Orange sense. I wuv Orange.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Vodafone used to be OK when I first got them (mostly because all the people I talk to most - husband, family, best mates - were on it and calls used to be 2p per minute to other Vodafones. Then they changed my call plan and it's like 30p a minute and I can't change it (I'm pay as you go) and am fucked if I'm paying them lots of money to find out if I can change it. I just text people. Or ignore them.

Airtel (Spanish Vodafone) send you nice spammy texts as soon as you turn your phone on in Spain. This is neither here nor there though. Go for Orange. I would now, I think.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

ive had no problem with 02, although for some reason coverage in the arsenal/finsbury park area is terrible. but i guess that wont affect matt dc. wait, matt dc? matts getting a mobile? wtf? 21st century business!

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

strange though i'm on T-mobile and i never have a problem with them - and most of the time i seem to get signals in places where other peoples' phones don't. Although I don't really know enough about them to recommend them (i don't even use the phone that much), esp in light of now reading other peoples' experiences here...

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm absolutely fine with T-mobile too, but then they like me cos I spend lot sof money with them D'oh.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I spend about a tenner a month, max. Orange must hate me.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

you poxy fules. Vodafone is the best innit (has broader coverage, or at least did, not sure if this still the case)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
Meanwhile in the US, Cingular is buying out AT&T Wireless.

Grrrr... I'm not looking forward to becoming a Cingular customer by default. I've never really had any problems with AT&T.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

AT&T SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS. There is only reception on the major highways and in the suburbs. There is NO reception in Silverlake or Koreatown in L.A.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I switched to AT&T and had no reception in my house with the *identical* phone. I switched back 2 days later.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM OTMOTMOTM

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Hopefully this merger will enhance reception for everyone, although I was thinking Vodafone's U.S. entry would be good for competition...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

also, customer service hold times are about a tenth of what they were on AT&T (granted AT&T had serious number portability issues). Cingular is almost always reachable within a few minutes. I actually hope this doesn't bog down Cingular!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I am locked into a 2 year contract w/ AT&T Digital Wireless and I am so desperate for ANYTHING that would improve reception I think I would send hookers to the CEO if he made it happen.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Again, I think I'm the only person who's ever had good luck with AT&T. Silver Lake and Spencer's place notwithstanding.

I'm still thinking of T-Mobile though

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Cingular is an accident waiting to happen. The reception is good, but they don't tell you that you have to buy a National plan to get roaming coverage. Otherwise, look forward to 79 cents/min outside of your home calling area. (Pain in the arse if travelling.)

TMobile is fab, as reception is clear, $39.99 gives you 600 Whenever min, plus nationwide roaming.

(Chris, beware of the $35 one-time fee that will be slapped on you for changing carriers---if you choose to.)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

You can get a national cingular plan with roaming (less anytime minutes than the local plan). T-Mobile reception is identical to Cingular as they share towers.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Is ATT wireless going to be called Cingular now?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I already have a national roaming plan with AT&T that's pretty good.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I have the same exact plan and I thin k it is horrible. The long distance would be great if I had any reception, but i never do.

Orbit (Orbit), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

TMOBILE RULZ. SPRINT SUX

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
question for t-mobile users: how long did it take you to have your service activated?

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 23 May 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

it took about six months. not good. customer service would call weekly to apologize and say that rollovers were taking much longer than expected (i was switching from sprint), and then apparently sprint gave them the wrong information for me (DIE SPRINT) which held things up even longer.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 23 May 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
I'm thinking about buying a contract phone

any tips or recommendations?

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

Get one of those mobile ones.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

eleven months pass...
flext seems to be more expensive now, than when you people got on board

i see, they are doing the offpeak ones with 500 free texts a month...for life

-- (688), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

so i decided to shift over to this tmobile plan:

750 minutes
evening/weekend
any network
500 txts

for £20

i rang o2 to get my pac number, and they said, what are t-mobile offering? we can better it, so, now im staying with o2, for the following package

500 minutes
ANYIME
ANY NETWORK
300 txts

for £20!! 500-anytime-£20!!! this is...really good right?

theyre giving me a 2mpixel cameraphone, the sony ericcsson d610i, which looks pretty good too

is this as good, as i think it is?

-- (688), Thursday, 17 August 2006 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

like, the t-mobile ones looked really great, and o2 (who are shit, and whos tarriffs are poor), just blew it out the water

-- (688), Thursday, 17 August 2006 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

k610i, i mean

-- (688), Thursday, 17 August 2006 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

yeah that sounds pretty good! i'm shocked.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 17 August 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

I went into a telephone shop today and had a conversation about mobile phones. I was told that I could get one for £15 per month with various bells & whistles. It was with a network called '3' or '3G'. Does anyone recommend or disdain this name? Or any other network?

Does anyone think I might be advised to buy a mobile phone and not sign a monthly deal for using it?

I should read the thread anyway, to glean its findings.

I bought an iPod this week, so apparently many things are possible.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:24 (seventeen years ago)

How regularly are you actually going to use it?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

That's a good question, DC. I guess not that often. It's not like I make a lot of phone calls as it is. I suppose if I had one, I might find myself calling people while on the way to meet them, and the like? But not just for fun, I hope.

One thing I asked in the shop: would I get less reception or signal with this network? The lady told me that such problems were a thing of the past - the past when this thread happened, I suppose.

One thing I would want to know: if I had a mobile telephone, could I use it in another country? It is when I go to one that I feel most in need of a mobile!

the pinefox, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:28 (seventeen years ago)

3 and 3G are not the same thing the pinefox

3 is a company or network, and 3G is a...well, 'type' of mobile/network. I would imagine that most mobiles are 3G now though I am not sure.

Whether you should sign a monthly deal or not really depends on what your usage is likely to be. Would this phone be likely to replace your landline?

laxalt, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

You can use it in another country but it can be expensive. If it is the same country and you are making repeat visits it can be worth getting a mobile in that country. For example if it is the USA you can get a mobile phone there with a US number and only use it when you are there

laxalt, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

Replace it! well, if I did that, I couldn't have the www connection, could I? or maybe I could. It would seem drastic, anyway, to have no landline. No, I don't think I would do that. But I don't make innumerable calls from the landline anyway.

Now, that I didn't know, about the other country issue.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

Have people (here) from the UK gone to the US, for instance, and spent loads of money using their mobiles?

the pinefox, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:33 (seventeen years ago)

Lots of people have old mobile phones lying around they no longer use, I personally have two pay-as-you-go SIM cards that I've been given over the years and never used. If I were you, I'd pick up an old one off a friend, put a PAYG card in there, and see how much you actually end up spending. If you're below the £15 threshold for the first few months, it's not really worth it.

I used my mobile for a week or so in New York, making and receiving only essential calls to met people etc, and I think it added about £30 to my monthly bill.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

when yr internationally roaming, even if you call someone 10 minutes away the call will be bounced back to yr home country and then to the country you are in. gets expensive. US and AUS have cheap pay as you go phones in most pharmacies and convenience stores. way cheaper option.

sunny successor, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

you can get a US mobile phone with credit already on it for around $20 so it doesnt really make sense to use your UK one there

not sure about other countries

laxalt, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

Or you can buy a SIM for you UK mobile for around $5 and not have to get a second phone but then you have to worry about unlocking.

Ed, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 17:12 (seventeen years ago)

not if you go to chinatown

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

i love east broadway so much

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

3 is a company or network, and 3G is a...well, 'type' of mobile/network.

I think that this kind of "technical" knowledge is really quite useless to normal people. I mean, I admire yr vast skills and knowledge in the area of cellular telephones, but that kind of specialist knowledge is of use only to cellular telephone professionals, not common, every-day users of cellular telephones.

Oh, and by the way, have they developed cellular telephone transportation devices yet? While I am quite desirous of the utility provided by a cellular telephone, I have difficulty envisioning myself transporting a brick-sized object to my various appointments without my arms becoming physically weary. A conveyance that utilized, say, my belt, would be most advantageous.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

I just bought a mobile telephone; or hired it anyway. It is £15 per month, for 18 months, from the 3 network.

been offered a free iphone 4 at £27.50 a month from t-mob... good deal?

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Monday, 11 July 2011 11:21 (fourteen years ago)

potentially v good deal...depending on how many mins/texts you get?

LocalGarda, Monday, 11 July 2011 11:21 (fourteen years ago)

i'd be shocked if it weren't unlimited texts. minutes i don't really care - i actually speak on the phone quite rarely these days i find. and the data would be unlimited. the network coverage map looks a bit dire for my postcode but it can't be worse than O2. sorta want to hold out for the 4S but i'd probably have to actually pay for that...

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Monday, 11 July 2011 11:25 (fourteen years ago)

to be clear i wouldn't actually be SHOCKED. i'd be mildly surprised.

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Monday, 11 July 2011 11:25 (fourteen years ago)

actually reception wise i'd find out someone who has one. o2 works v well for me but flatmate has an orange phone and she has to leave the flat for it to work.

lol@her.

it's a v good deal tho i think.

LocalGarda, Monday, 11 July 2011 11:26 (fourteen years ago)

well, the guy's going to call me back. i think i'll take it.
