orange does match any other network's plan, although they don't advertise that much. probably best to figure out what your friends are on and get the same one?
orange's page with all the other plans on it is kind of hard to find. it's at http://www.orange.co.uk/cgi-bin/ovp/costs.pl

I love it when you go to a foreign country BTW and there is an invisible war for the soul of your mobile so it changes operators about three times a day!

Spent £20 on their text saver pack a few weeks back (apparently unusual for operators to offer deals like this to pay-as-you-goers?) = £5 call credit plus five free texts a day for a year.
Never a problem with reception but then I don't go Zone 7 orienteering or anything.
― Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)
FIVE TEXTS A DAY FOR A YEAR FOR ONLY £15. That's Orange sense. I wuv Orange.
― N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)
Airtel (Spanish Vodafone) send you nice spammy texts as soon as you turn your phone on in Spain. This is neither here nor there though. Go for Orange. I would now, I think.

TMobile is fab, as reception is clear, $39.99 gives you 600 Whenever min, plus nationwide roaming.
(Chris, beware of the $35 one-time fee that will be slapped on you for changing carriers---if you choose to.)

I went into a telephone shop today and had a conversation about mobile phones. I was told that I could get one for £15 per month with various bells & whistles. It was with a network called '3' or '3G'. Does anyone recommend or disdain this name? Or any other network?
Does anyone think I might be advised to buy a mobile phone and not sign a monthly deal for using it?
I should read the thread anyway, to glean its findings.
I bought an iPod this week, so apparently many things are possible.
― the pinefox, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:24 (seventeen years ago)
How regularly are you actually going to use it?
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)
That's a good question, DC. I guess not that often. It's not like I make a lot of phone calls as it is. I suppose if I had one, I might find myself calling people while on the way to meet them, and the like? But not just for fun, I hope.
One thing I asked in the shop: would I get less reception or signal with this network? The lady told me that such problems were a thing of the past - the past when this thread happened, I suppose.
One thing I would want to know: if I had a mobile telephone, could I use it in another country? It is when I go to one that I feel most in need of a mobile!
― the pinefox, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:28 (seventeen years ago)
3 and 3G are not the same thing the pinefox
3 is a company or network, and 3G is a...well, 'type' of mobile/network. I would imagine that most mobiles are 3G now though I am not sure.
Whether you should sign a monthly deal or not really depends on what your usage is likely to be. Would this phone be likely to replace your landline?
― laxalt, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)
You can use it in another country but it can be expensive. If it is the same country and you are making repeat visits it can be worth getting a mobile in that country. For example if it is the USA you can get a mobile phone there with a US number and only use it when you are there
― laxalt, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)
Replace it! well, if I did that, I couldn't have the www connection, could I? or maybe I could. It would seem drastic, anyway, to have no landline. No, I don't think I would do that. But I don't make innumerable calls from the landline anyway.
Now, that I didn't know, about the other country issue.
― the pinefox, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:32 (seventeen years ago)
Have people (here) from the UK gone to the US, for instance, and spent loads of money using their mobiles?
― the pinefox, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:33 (seventeen years ago)
Lots of people have old mobile phones lying around they no longer use, I personally have two pay-as-you-go SIM cards that I've been given over the years and never used. If I were you, I'd pick up an old one off a friend, put a PAYG card in there, and see how much you actually end up spending. If you're below the £15 threshold for the first few months, it's not really worth it.
I used my mobile for a week or so in New York, making and receiving only essential calls to met people etc, and I think it added about £30 to my monthly bill.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)
when yr internationally roaming, even if you call someone 10 minutes away the call will be bounced back to yr home country and then to the country you are in. gets expensive. US and AUS have cheap pay as you go phones in most pharmacies and convenience stores. way cheaper option.
― sunny successor, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:54 (seventeen years ago)
you can get a US mobile phone with credit already on it for around $20 so it doesnt really make sense to use your UK one there
not sure about other countries
― laxalt, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)
Or you can buy a SIM for you UK mobile for around $5 and not have to get a second phone but then you have to worry about unlocking.
― Ed, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 17:12 (seventeen years ago)

3 is a company or network, and 3G is a...well, 'type' of mobile/network.
I think that this kind of "technical" knowledge is really quite useless to normal people. I mean, I admire yr vast skills and knowledge in the area of cellular telephones, but that kind of specialist knowledge is of use only to cellular telephone professionals, not common, every-day users of cellular telephones.
Oh, and by the way, have they developed cellular telephone transportation devices yet? While I am quite desirous of the utility provided by a cellular telephone, I have difficulty envisioning myself transporting a brick-sized object to my various appointments without my arms becoming physically weary. A conveyance that utilized, say, my belt, would be most advantageous.
― libcrypt, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)
I just bought a mobile telephone; or hired it anyway. It is £15 per month, for 18 months, from the 3 network.

potentially v good deal...depending on how many mins/texts you get?
― LocalGarda, Monday, 11 July 2011 11:21 (fourteen years ago)
i'd be shocked if it weren't unlimited texts. minutes i don't really care - i actually speak on the phone quite rarely these days i find. and the data would be unlimited. the network coverage map looks a bit dire for my postcode but it can't be worse than O2. sorta want to hold out for the 4S but i'd probably have to actually pay for that...
― 40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Monday, 11 July 2011 11:25 (fourteen years ago)
to be clear i wouldn't actually be SHOCKED. i'd be mildly surprised.
actually reception wise i'd find out someone who has one. o2 works v well for me but flatmate has an orange phone and she has to leave the flat for it to work.
lol@her.
it's a v good deal tho i think.
