If you didn't know, TOMORROW NIGHT (fri) some of the UK ILE people are organising a club night 'London Indie USA' with all proceeds going to the International Red Cross, after all the unfortunate events of September.

Betsey Trotwood, Farringdon Road, Farringdon, London, £5 to get in, from 8pm.

If this is against any rules, sorry in advance, but its all for charity...

Comments, requests for tunes, anyone?

Will McKenzie, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not against the rules.

Also - with 20 different DJs, which tunes do you think will get played more than once? More than twice?

I was going to do a set of bands from New York BUT I've been put on in a frighteningly 'prime' slot so I'd better play some more familiar stuff. Requests?

If you come make sure you spend all evening DOWNSTAIRS where the mighty ILE massive (Starry! Pete! Ricky T! Me! Carsmile!) will be on the decXoR - upstairs is that Strange Fruit lot playing nothing but Moldy Peaches ALL NIGHT. (Insert sarky emoticon here, we wuv everyone playing upstairs obviously tho' not the Moldy Ps).

Tom, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ahem, I am on at the same time as Tom only upstairs.

I think the candidates for repeat plays are get yr freak on and possibly groovejet. Not sure if I'll get away with playing it's over by Kurupt, more's the pity.

chris, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm DJing upstairs *blows raspberry*. And I laugh all over you lot because you will SWEAT IN THE PIT OF HELL THAT IS DOWNSTAIRS AT THE BETSEY, HA! That's pit of hell in a good way, folks, don't let me put you off now.

Madchen, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone got Public Enemy & Anthrax's version of 'Bring The Noise'?

Nick, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I will be there cos it's finally my birthday and you must all be nice to me or I'll sulk.

DG, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

JUST for saying that, EWING, I shall play the Moldy Peaches version of LITTLE BUNNY FOO FOO and I bet EVERYONE will dance and that will show you, you cheeky beggar.

Sarah, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm just gonna put the best of Busta Rhymes on repeat and dance like a loon. i have no idea when or where i am DJing, or even if there are CD and record playas!! hurrah! i am going to see New Order tonight as well and there's a tube strike tomorrow so i expect to have NO SLEEP over the next 48 hours. see you all there!

katie, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Moldy Peaches are so so terrible. Magnetic Fields only more irritating.

Ronan, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shame you won't be coming, Ronan.

Sarah, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't care much for socialising or alcoholising. You're all scheming jezebels and some day satan will take back what he's giving you so freely now.

Ronan, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll be not playing Moldy Peaches upstairs while O Starry1 is hurting Joe Public's ears downstairs.

Martin, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a prior engagement w/ Spiritualized, which is why I cannot come and support you all in yr noble cause (it has nothing to do with my Dastoor-like disdain for indie discos, oh no.)

Andrew L, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Joe PUBLIC is coming? Ace. What about his mate, Nigel ENEMY?

Sarah, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Spiritualised are just the Moldy Peaches with a hundred extra cellists.

Tom, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom - sounds good to me! (although I have not heard yr Mouldy Peaches and suspect that they are wank - nothing to do w/ Peaches, no?)

Andrew L, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

For anyone who doesn't already know, the tube strike is off, so Londoners really have no excuse now...

Madchen, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So, like, you're all fuckin DJs? no-one's mentioned THAT on the archetypal ILE thread...

chris, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not just Strange Fruit upstairs! There are only four Strange Fruit people, and they're split equally between floors. Ouch!

20 DJs. That must be some sort of record. It's my ambition to have One More Time playing simultaneously on both floors. There'll be no escape! :)

Paul Strange, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes Nick I have the anthrax/ public enemy audio unit you were enquiring about.

james, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

DJs in their own bathrooms.

Five quid to help *americans* of all people. Sheesh - the music better be damned good...(mmm, B52s, 1.85, nice)

ogden, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I also have anthrax publiic enemy, although this will mean i have to play a record rather than just cds which failed on a couple of occasions last nite when i tried it and prolly will be no better tomorrow as i am (ahem) headlining (ie i will have all nite to get pished before i go on). Also, and this is a big also, the money is going to the red cross, not a specifically 9/11 type thing after much discussion among the group.

carsmilesteve, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

also, in case you didn't notice NICK DASTOOR WILL BE AT AN INDIE DISCO!!!! so come just to see that if nothing else, he'll be go-go dancing apparently...

carsmilesteve, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope this is as good as I want it to be. Someone had better play the Associates for me or I'll set my minder - er, brother on you. All of you.

DG, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

play technical difficulties and think of me.

ethan, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Play anything off of Discosis and think of me , please

anthony, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

will al jolsen be there?

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Good luck for tonight. I'll be there in spirit. Wearing ear-plugs and a balaclava. I will only take my ear-plugs out when Pine-Fox is on.

Peter Miller, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have brought The Associates. Fear not DG.

Paul Strange, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can you play 'The Affectionate Punch' or 'A Matter of Gender'?

Also - has anybody got Billy MacKenzie's solo single 'Baby' - I haven't heard it for so long... *sigh* and it would be such a cool smooch song to end the night with...

Will McKenzie, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

8 til when?

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1am! Hooray!

Sarah, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am also bringing Sulk.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just want to re-iterate what Carmsile Steve said, in case Ogden didn't catch it. The money is going to the *INTERNATIONAL* Red Cross for them to do with as they see fit.

Madchen, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, not completely as they see fit. If we found out they were using it to buy Buffy merchandise and big bags of crisps we'd be mad as hell.

Nick, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am going to get PISS ASS DRUNK and play Kylie - and i am on upstairs at 8! hurrah!! wonder if i can get piss ass drunk by 8?

katie, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am mad as hell that Buffy exists at all.

Madchen, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes! i am not able to attend (stewpeed ocean!!) but my drunken rambling has made it into the il* lexicon.

jess, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*reaches for and opens BIG BOOK OF BUFFY'S EVIL ENEMIES*
*writes laboriously*
Nick "Penishead" Dastoor
madchen-in-so-called-uniform

mark s, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*photocopies marks' BIG BUFFY ENEMIES book*
*puts it in secure deposit box in the Lusty Librarians Lair for safe keeping so in case of WAUGH the cockroaches will know and exact their cockroachy terror on the heathens*

Sarah, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyway, "stokey" surely = north London hellmouth.

Sarah, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it wishes

mark s, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I demand Teeange Dirtbag.

(Or short of that, Kandy Pop, whatv I have dancing around the kitchen to all morning)

Graham, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree Kandy Pop would be ace, but I don't have a copy. My set remains secret until 10.30pm ce soir.

Stokey has greater concerns than hellmouths - unmanned spyplane spotted yesterday while standing at the bus stop outside the Egg Stores.

Madchen, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what cd be sneakier than a spyplane which TRAVELS BY BUS!!

mark s, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Stop making weak jokes and get thee to the Buffy thread.

Madchen, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have Kandy Pop! Hurrah!!! :) And Baxendale! :)

Paul Strange, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeuch. I'm really glad there are two rooms tonight. Bis + Baxendale = more than my tiny head can cope with.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

£1800 raised. Sarah forgot her Moldy Peaches CD, so no Li'l Bunny Foo Foo (so I was caught by my cockney geezer thug housemate dancing around my figurative kitchen to it last night for nothing). Digital Love was cut off in its prime. Suzy was v.v. drunk, or at least acting like it (like with The Mrs, it's hard to tell). And other people can tell the rest better than me.

I've just walked 4 miles all the way from The Betsey to Paddington (well not all the way, the last half hour was more bopping and miming to Kandy Pop, Little Bunny Foo Foo, Digital Love, and other misellaneous indie hits at full volume, while vigourously shaking and clapping my water bottle tambourine. Quite a sight I'm sure), cos as you know I'm more scared of bus drivers (and A1 Dojikabs) than I am of the locals (just avoid anyone who looks less drunk than you, and fear your own shadow). As Robin Williams (or whoever it is) says in Hook, London really is the safest city in the world for kids - only once did someone try to rape me [maybe] (Shavenhead Greek bloke: "small talk small talk small talk. Do you want to come for a drink? I was thinking maybe I cook....Do you smoke? [Me:No [thank god]] Okay." [bends over to light cigarette. I wander away nicely and politely AS FAST ASMY DANCINGFEET WILL CARRY ME]). But hey it's an experience and it proves I'm PISS ASS SEXY.

(and it meant me going the wrong direction, which killed some time so I didn't have to spend too long waiting around at the station with weirdoes who might try to... Oh never mind).

(I think a guy at Sussed also tried it on with me, He kept asking me to dance in slightly overfriendly terms (which I put down to the refreshments) then just as he's leaving "You should dance... You're really beautiful". No luck with the girls though. Can somebody find me an open-minded lesbian?)

(Spelling And Typing Coherently While Drunk: Classic Or Dud?).

I'll be home eventually. Need sleep.

Graham, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, it was cool. (i was the kid in the big leather jacket and clock work orange tshirt, who looked half asleep). I left really early cos i was absoloutly fucking knackered.

fatnick, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham: not that drunk at all. We started with a Bloody Mary at the Eagle (best in London), moved to hot saké at the Japanese Canteen, and then I had wine spritzers at the disko. I blame having to move about in sauna conditions. Besides which, I always lift boys as a test of strength on these occasions.

What are you trying to do, give me a *reputation*?

Anyway I had loads of fun and the occasion befitted birthday boy DG. The divine LC is fab, by the way.

suzy, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Should anyone care, Spiritualized were pretty crappy, btw. The new band is not a patch on the old one. I join Kate in her disillusionment w/ Jason. The Spectrum revival starts here.

Andrew L, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I left early because it was an indie disco.

Nick, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It were great. Lots of money raised, lots of dancing and POWER SHANDIES. Though I fear I have earned Tom's eternal emnity by playing three of the cornerstones of his set just before he came on.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but did anyone get PISS ASS DRUNK? (this is the most important question, as i did not last night. i are counting on you guys.)

jess, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I was drunker than piss ass drunk.

rosemary, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just thought I'd say on behalf of the Yanks - thanks, you guys!

Kerry, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Blimey, £1800 - nice one!

RickyT - emnity swiftly dispersed. Sorry for ducking out early - this wasn't caused by my being unable to be in the same room as the Boy of Badgers but by a big argument (now thankfully resolved) w/Isabel which put me in a foul mood. She and I are sorry and she told me to post this though let's face it, you were all too arsed to notice. Anyway an upshot of my quick getaway was that I left my jacket in the Betsey - did anyone pick it up (black, Burtons, kind of mock-suedey thing).

Tom, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was certainly PISS ASS DRUNK. I think DG might have been as well cos he danced to The Strokes. Yes, you read that right, DG DANCED TO THE STROKES!

Richard Tunnicliffe, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Incidentally my foul mood cannot have been unrelated to hearing "Who's Got The Crack?" THREE TIMES over the course of the night. A lot of people got into Flood by They Might Be Giants too, you know.

DG danced to The Strokes eh? Blimey!!!

Tom, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe we've disagreed before Tom, and maybe we will again, but "Who's got the crack" really makes me want to smash something in anger. And not in a sort of good Primal Scream sort of way.

Ronan, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thankyou Ronan, I'm glad we're shoulder-to-shoulder on this one. I believe Pete is also on-message - now is a time to put aside old divisions and unite, I think. Of course I am not just cross because more people danced to it than anything I played.

Tom, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe if we all pull together we can rid the world of the disgusting black cancer that is the Moldy Peaches music.

Ronan, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom = Likes Sound Of The Streets, Hates Who's Got The Crack? => Tom = Doomed

Graham, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oohhh i had a FANTASTICO time but i had to leave early cos of getting up early this morning - BOOO! i was not PISS ASS DRUNK but when i was dancing to Psycho Killer i looked like i was. againagain!!!!

katie, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The music played sounds awful.. Moldy Peaches, The Strokes and i bet that The White Stripes got played as well, their new single is awful like a rockerabilly hillybilly rocking cowpunk tripe, weedy vocals and rocknroll tedium zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

DJ Martian, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

shutchor face Martian. are Talking Heads, Stereolab, PJ and Duncan, Busta Rhymes, Destiny's Child, Belle and Sebastian, Inspiral Carpets and Mark E Smith-arrrrh, David Bowie etc etc etc crap? i think NOT

katie, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

in other news, the red cross were red(faced) and cross indeed, as they announced they had had to bail dj martian's ANTI- COMMERCIAL PURE MUSIC-INTEGRITY ONLY CHARITY WINGDING, to the tune of £1800000000, as the punters rioted after only a few minutes, torching the venue and pantsing the DJ. "It was horrible," said a plainly distressed club-goer, interviewed afterwards, ears still bleeding. "We went for a good time in a good cause, but he played VULVAFACE and pure instinct took over."

mark s, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

..PJ and Duncan, Busta Rhymes, Destiny's Child, Belle and Sebastian, Inspiral Carpets...ah more evidence!

DJ Martian, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually Mark it was 2nd Gen 'Musicians are Morons' that enraged the "London Indie Community" - especially when I dedicated the track to the bass player out of Tom Paulin !!!!!!!!!!!

DJ Martian, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Good God, I'm even more depressed now. I thought about going to the bash but really would have preferred one-to-one quiet talking/getting things out in the open - not sure if noisy old Farringdon Road indie diskoz are the best environment for doing things like that. But not only did I miss the potentially actionable sight of DG bopping to VER STROKEZ, but I also missed the chance of being lifted up by Suzy as a test of strength, which may well have been a highlight of my miserable life thus far which has been hitherto criminally omitted from the debate.

Maybe I should just crawl back under t'duvet and just ring up Talk Sport at 2:46 every morning for the rest of my days. It be all that I be good for.

Lowther Sulzmann Sopranino Bullroarer, Saturday, 13 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I did not dance to the Strokes. What's wrong with you people?
