Recommend me a video game system

Wifey and I are buying one aftre the hell-idays. Now, we're getting old and out of touch and don't know a game cube from an X Box. I'm pretty set on getting Playstation 2, just for Grand Theft Auto, which I played once and really loved (cheered me up big time), but I have no idea what I should do here, consumer wise.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 18 December 2003 05:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I would say the choice is really between the X-Box and the PS2. I would lean towards the X-Box because a) the "quirky"/exclusive games on X-Box appeal to me more than the "q"/e games on PS2; and b) the X-Box is a more powerful piece of hardware.

Having said that, I doubt you'd be disappoint with either of them.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 18 December 2003 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Grand Theft Auto is on other systems, too. I don't own one, and I don't really know what to get, but Playstation 2 seems to be the "cool" one to get. However, I think XBox and Gamecubes are generally cheaper?

hstencil, Thursday, 18 December 2003 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

that new mario kart game on the gamecube is totally awesome!

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 18 December 2003 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I have an X-Box at home and it's pretty sweet. The PS2 has worse graphics and no exclusive games that I want to play.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:00 (twenty-one years ago)

PS2 has 7 years worth of games, tho. and the PS3 will be backwards compat.

i likes me PS2 and me Gamecube.

El Santo Claus (Kingfish), Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure the next XBox will be backwards compatible. If you get your XBox modded then you can download and play all the old NES, SNES, Megadrive, Arcade games too.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:05 (twenty-one years ago)

X-box all the way, if only for Halo and Halo 2 (coming soon). I haven't tried a Gamecube yet, but a pal o' mine lent me an ps2 for a couple of months and I couldn't get into it at all.

Doesn't really matter what you buy now though. New systems'll be coming out before you know it.

may pang (maypang), Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

X-box. It's got a hard-drive that yoy can put music on, if you have the spare time (up to 500 songs per mix). Plus its graphics and sound are better than PS2's. Also Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City are now available for X-Box in a two-for-the-price-of-one double pack.
Go with X-Box.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Oooh and I forgot that DVD playback on the X-Box is streets ahead of that on the PS2.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:25 (twenty-one years ago)

how so?

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen a side-by-side comparison and the PS2 is more jaggy and ugly for some reason.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

XBox has better online play capabilities, from what I've heard. Also: PROJECT GOTHAM RACING 2. Car dork heroin.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Did I mention Halo?

may pang (maypang), Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Halo is Teh Best!
A year and a half ago I never would have thought I'd reccomend Xbox, but it's better than PS2 now. I don't think it has quite as many games, or as wide a variety, but mostly that'd be a problem only for avid gamers.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Sports games are much better on the XBox - no loading lag.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 18 December 2003 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

the "quirky"/exclusive games on X-Box appeal to me more than the "q"/e games on PS2;

Which Xbox games are you thinking about here? One of my problems with the Xbox is that I don't see it as having any quirky/exclusive games, just the same sports/blowingthingsup/fighting franchises as the others only with more computer behind. Compared with Ico/Jak/Ratcher/Rez/Vib Ribbon for the PS2. GameCube has nothing but q/e games, with a wait of about six months between each :( [also :)]

Apart from Halo/that Star Wars RPG for Xbox.

Xbox Live is supposed to be a fantastic and full-featured system for setting you up to play against sociopaths and retards world-wide, if that sounds like something you'd want to do.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 18 December 2003 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

XBox - better spec, plays DVD's a lot better, also highly flexible if you know your PC ins and outs, can be 'customised' with a bit of tinkering.

ps2 - Lots and lots of games available and can play old ps1 games, will always be the punters number 1 due to massively successful ps1. oh and the controls pads have never been bettered in my opinion.

gamecube - um, dunno, zelda ? oh and mario.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 18 December 2003 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

get dreamcast. you can get fun games for 5 bucks at used game stores.

Mike Hanle y (mike), Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

2600 atari, baby, all the way.

yetimike (McGonigal), Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

or a game/clock, recommend donkey kong

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

robster (robster), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Roger the absolute basic question is - what kind of games do you like? XBox may have all the specs in the world but as it stands I would never in a million years buy one because I find first-person-shooters/stealth games/horror games/war games BOOOOR-ING. I like RPGs, puzzley style games and cutesy platformers and have been very happy with a PS2 and recently a GameCube.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

buy them all! they're not that expensive. i find it weird that many people think they can only own one...i still haven't bought any of them tho

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

what Tico said. Robster - I have one of those, and sadly one of the games on it is now to be found on my mobile phone!

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

SEGA!

Catty (Catty), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

but you got use the voice to say it so it's all shouty and one syllable instead of two.

Catty (Catty), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

SAY GAR

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

saygar!
(one syllable. shouted.)

ace.

Personally I'm up for gamecube. Mario Brothers *and* sonic on one system?!?!? Classic.

Catty (Catty), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

how can you say saygar as one syllable ?

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Very quickly.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 18 December 2003 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Which Xbox games are you thinking about here?

I am thinking almost exclusively about Jet Set Radio.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 18 December 2003 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Hit the dreamcast for Jet Grind Radio. Jet Set was supposedly just a remake, with prettier colors and less playability.

El Santo Claus (Kingfish), Thursday, 18 December 2003 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, get a Game Boy Advance or two! They're little tiny Super Nintendos that can fit in your pocketses. And they're pretty.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 18 December 2003 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I already have JGR for Dreamcast. The Xbox version was a sequel, from what I understand.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 18 December 2003 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

roger, now that Grand Theft Auto and Vice City are available for xbox, I would go for that one. Most new games now come out for all 3 systems simultaneously.

Berkeley Sackett (calstars), Thursday, 18 December 2003 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I have an XBox and a Gamecube. I like my Xbox more 'cause I got to play the Star Wars RPG and now Grand Theft Auto and Halo and Jet Set Radio Future and the Buffy game come on and soon the Peter Molyneux RPG, Fable, will come out etc etc etc.

The Gamecube is useful 'cause I can sit my girlfriend in front of it with Animal Crossing and she'll leave me be for a couple hours. Also Viewtiful Joe is crazy fun. I don't really like the Playstation--it's slow and the controller is really annoying.

adam (adam), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Halo is great! I am horrible with video games but this is fun to play even for an amateur like me.

I don't really play any other video games but Mr. Robotico is a big fan of all of the other games for xbox as well.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone know how when the new systems will come out? i don't really want to spend the money on an xbox only to see a new one roll out two months later

kephm, Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the nextgen Nintendo box is rumored to be revealed at the next E3. PS3 will be out w/in 2 years.

check IGN or penny arcade for random news about this.

El Santo Claus (Kingfish), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The PS3 is expected around late 2005 or early 2006. The others will be roughly the same time, I reckon.

(xpost)

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The GameCube is cheap, but it only really has a few fun games. I guess I still like the GameBoy Advance best of all, coz it has Golden Sun and Pokemon which are the best time murdering games I've ever played.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh get a PS2, there's about a dozen good games on X-Box, and countless hundreds on PS2. Also X-Box looks silly and the controllers are annoying.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think though that Xbox comes with skinnier controllers recently.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 18 December 2003 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I am thinking almost exclusively about Jet Set Radio.

That is an entirely acceptable answer.

I think though that Xbox comes with skinnier controllers recently.

Yeah, but they still look like someone sellotaped all the other controllers together.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 18 December 2003 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I've played through most of the games I wanted to on GBA (Zelda, Metroid, etc.)...should I get Golden Sun or Final Fantasy Tactics next? Or maybe one of the Castlevania games?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 18 December 2003 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

MAME all the way

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 18 December 2003 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Buy my PS2 on ebay.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 18 December 2003 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I the only person in the world to find Vice City to be a huge disappointment?

David Beckh0u5e (Dave Beckh0u5e), Thursday, 18 December 2003 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

My housemate just called me and informed me he's buying a Gamecube today. I guess that ups our video game system count to eight. (Nintendo, Super Nintendo, N64, Sega Saturn, XBox, Gamecube, Gameboy (x2), Gameboy Advance, and a Gamepark)

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 18 December 2003 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I got a GC, and the Zelda game is fantastic: wonderfully twee graphics, fairly deep and involved gameplay, and a surprisingly quality storyline.

Leee Iacocca (Leee), Friday, 19 December 2003 06:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the Cube does have some great games, too: Zelda, Metroid, Pikmin, Eternal Darkness, Viewtiful Joe, and plenty more.

it doesn't have the numbers as the other systems, but each games tends to have more care put into it.

El Santo Claus (Kingfish), Friday, 19 December 2003 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's not forget Rogue Leader on GC - the best Star Wars game on any console (apparently). I'm looking fwd to getting the sequel 2nd hand in the new year

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

No I found Vice City to be a big disappointment, as I do with alot of the sequels to games whose best quality was their innovation when originally released, ie Tomb Raider, GTA, and to a much lesser extent Metal Gear Solid.

The sequels might look better etc, but once you've played Grand Theft Auto on PC for the first time then you've played it. Yeah I do mean the shitty 2d version too.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew, what the fuck is a Gamepark?

We had a Cube at the apartment for a couple weeks last year. Super Smash Bros. was good stupid two player fun, and Rogue Squadron was indeed awesome, except I only played a couple games and I sucked so I enjoyed watching more than playing.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 December 2003 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

you should get either a paperboy machine or a tapper machine, one of those specially tricked out joystick ones, def

maura (maura), Friday, 19 December 2003 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

cheap dreamcast is great advice, nothing but smashes

prima fassy (bob), Saturday, 20 December 2003 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Screw console games and just download some crappily produced RPG Maker 2003 games.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 20 December 2003 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)
