ILXors in Europe (warning: large ever-changing graphic of Europe involved)

i want to know how much of Europe has been seen by ILXors. below is the most decent map i could find (sorry about the size but it needs to be big and relativelty detailed). please post the places you have been to (mention cities you have stayed in or briefly visited, smaller towns not on the map and even regions you have travelled through) and i will mark them in some way then replace the graphic with the latest version whenever it is updated. visual fun!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 18 December 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

potential fun in me trying to work out exactly where the obscure Slovakian village you passed through on your year out is and getting lambasted for putting a red dot too far left or right (so give a little description of where the dot should go to best represent where you have been unless it is already apparent i.e. Paris)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 18 December 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Newport, the Isle of Wight, Malta, Madrid, Seville!

I want to go to Tampere, does that count?

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 18 December 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm...

Frankfurt Berlin Amsterdam Paris Strassbourg venice barcelona ibiza Rhodes Kos Minorca Majorca Bodrum Istanbul Brussels Newcastle London Budapest Edinburgh IOW Tunis

Are you sure about this?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

WHo cares if the US recognises Serbia and Montenegro?

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanna go to ROCKALL!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the most bonkers plan ILE has yet come up with. The map would surely have to be much much bigger to absorb all your markers? I mean I'm not that well-travelled but I could sit here all day and list towns and regions I have passed through. I'm not going to, though.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth probably already has been to Rockall

mark grout i regret it already but too late now!

N, it doesn't have to be that specific - obviously i may as well fill in most of the UK straight away but i'd like to see what big gaps there are in Europe if any

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Amsterdam, Nijmegen (sp?)

Cologne, Koblenz (sp?)

Prague, Bratislava, Brno, Telc, Cesky Krumlov, Karlovy Vary actually, just about every major town and city in the Czech republic and Slovakia. Just fill in the whole map, we were there for a long time. (it was great)

Cyprus isn't on your map, otherwise Paphos, Larnaca, Limmasol, Nicosia

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm limiting this to places I've actually spent a night.

Iceland: all cities on the perimeter.
UK: London
Belgium: Brussels
France: Paris, Strasbourg
Lux: Lux.
Germany: Cologne, Bonn, Dresden, Mainz, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden, Berlin, Görlitz, Bochum, Düsseldorf, Munich, Jena, Erfurt, Nuremburg, Frankfurt am Main, Frankfurt an der Oder, Aachen, Würzburg, the Allgäu region, the Sauerland region, other places besides.
Switzerland: Zürich
Austria: Vorarlberg, East Tyrol, Salzberger Land, Innsbruck, Vienna, Mödling, Hinterbrühl, Linz, Upper Austria, Nether Austria (Marchland region)
Poland: Wroclaw (Breslau)
Slovakia: right across the March river from Angern an der march, Austria (I forget the name of the Slovak town)
Greece: Athens, Thessolonika, Kavala, islands of Thassos and Kavala

Hell, Steve, I think you might as well just paint the map blue once we're all done with it.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

can't remember all of them from when i was a kid, but in the last couple years i've been to bologna, mallorca, reykjavik, stockholm, rome, barcelona, paris.

can't think of any more. destiny's child's '8 days of christmas' has just killed my brain.

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i forgot Loreley, Boppard, Bad Hönnigen and Remagen but how small do these places have to be? if I listed all the UK places I'd prolly break ilx (at quite an apposite moment judging by some of the thread content recently heh).

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

london is automatically a huge splodge of red (as will be most of the UK i suspect), soz

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

not a bad idea gareth

i was planning to start threads for other continents

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

only up to colin's post so far and not got all those in there yet - still this is a useful exercise for me as i am realising where places, and in some cases, entire countries, actually are as opposed to where i thought they were

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 18 December 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Szeged, Hungary. Put the dot on the Danube to the right of Pécs in the south. My friend went to medical school there in the early '90s -- told me a truly amazing story about how they had a bunch of cats there for dissection (bad, I know) and my friend and his classmate got curious as to how they were feeding these things since the school was pretty strapped for cash. As it turned out, they were feeding them on cadavers! Szeged: home of flesh-eating cats.

Octothorpe (Octothorpe), Friday, 19 December 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

You can cover most of Scotland for me, I think. I'm skipping the places I've been in England and Wales and Ireland as I think ILXers live in or near all of them. Places abroad I have been in Europe:
Paris and St Tropez, (France)
Benalmadena, Malaga, Fuengirola, Marbella, Estepona, Calahonda, Nerja, Mijas (OK, most of the Costa del Sol) Barcelona, Seville, Ronda, Lloret de Mar, Palma de Mallorca, Cala Millor, Salou (Spain)
Gibraltar
Brussels (Belgium)
And I think that's it.

I've been to Cyprus too, so Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos.

With regard my claim to have been almost everywhere in Scotland, my island-hopping is a bit lame, i.e. only Skye and Orkney. So someone else will have to claim the rest.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 19 December 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i couldn't believe how many of you have actually been to mallorca (where i live).
on topic: after reading all your contributions, i think i can only add a few more french cities: rennes, bordeaux, belfort, saint-malo.

joan vich (joan vich), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, made a mistake when I said "Island of Kavala" -- I meant Kythira.

It's alright Steve, they just think you love Hitler.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 December 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Not already on the map:

Tours (Loire valley)
La Rochelle (north of Bordeaux somewhere)
Tangiers, Rabat (Morocco - does this count?)
Verona
Ghent
Ypres
Bruges
Seville
Cadiz
Holyhead
Porthleven (Bottom tip of Cornwall)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 December 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Tangiers, Rabat (Morocco - does this count?)

How can this count? Have we split Africa or something?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 19 December 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

It counts because its on the map and someone has already marked off Tunis.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 19 December 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

B-but, it shouldn't count. Part of Africa's now in Europe just because someone thinks it should be? Is this like how Israel get in the Eurovision Song Contest?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 19 December 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

relax. there will be a proper Africa one soon, but i will fill in the places mentioned on this one as well.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 19 December 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

spain has two cities in northern africa (ceuta and melilla), plus the canary islands, and they're all geographically part of africa, but politically european...

I was born in Tromsø, have lived in Moss, Trondheim and Drøbak, and currently live in Oslo. All in Norway.

A selection of other cities and towns that do not seem to have been claimed yet: Graz, Ljubljana, Freiburg, Rome (!?), Marseille, Lyon, Perpignan.

OleM (OleM), Friday, 19 December 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

you must leave the thread now.

I've been to Naples. there's no dot on Naples!

Catty (Catty), Friday, 19 December 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Stevem is being very lax with France - maybe he's working on another project that he has on the go?

chris (chris), Friday, 19 December 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, there's also Hay-on-Wye and Conwy in Wales.... and Dunooooooooooooon in Scotland (er, outside Glasgow, where I have also been)
I've also been through the alps and hit Dijon and Florence on my way to Rome.

Catty (Catty), Friday, 19 December 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry chris i was totally distracted by this here drying paint, it's incredible

stevem (blueski), Friday, 19 December 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

YOU HAVE NO_ONE TO BLAME BUT YOURSELF, STEVEM!!!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 19 December 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Scotland's being very under-represented on the red dot front as well. Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling (?) only dotted so far.

x-post - it was your idea stevem :)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 19 December 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

er, add Greenock for Scotland as well. cheers.

purely a visibility issue ambrose

stevem (blueski), Friday, 19 December 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed has come up with the first place in Scotland I haven't been to yet. i.e. Mull. I have no idea how to even start listing the places I have been in Scotland. Just put a big red dot on mainland Scotland and be done with it :)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 19 December 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I think we should go with the 'no-one can claim anywhere in the country they live' idea.

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 19 December 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

...unless no other ILXer has been there?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 19 December 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

fourteen years pass...

this seems like a pretty spare listing, wonder if things have changed since then?

droit au butt (Euler), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 12:21 (seven years ago)

Struggle to motivate

I've interrailed and will likely do so again this year and lots of trips besides but I mean there are no ilxors anymore so why document it
