I'll take the cab scene in 'Lost in Translation' with 'Sometimes' on the soundtrack.

That moment when the credits for Lost in Translation came up.

may pang (maypang), Saturday, 20 December 2003 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

May Pang OTM.

Also: O-renshii's (sp?) board meeting in Kill Bill.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 20 December 2003 06:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The fleeting appearance of Colossus in "X-Men 2".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 20 December 2003 06:58 (twenty-one years ago)

man I do not get the Lost in Translation hate. I maybe understand indifference but hate?

One of my favorite moments: when the boyfriend shows up bloodied and beaten in front of April's family in Pieces of April.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 20 December 2003 08:04 (twenty-one years ago)

There was just nothing to like about it. Maybe my theater got a bad print, but even the vaunted cinematography looked muddled to me.

And expectations factor in - I loved the Virgin Suicides, and the hype had me believing that this was some wonderful, transcendent film. But it was just two bored, rich, whiny, Ugly Americans wasting my time.

Particularly grating was the way the 'ditzy' actress was treated - she was no more vapid and boring than Scarlett Johannsen's character, just louder. Bill Murray's night out with the hipsters didn't make sense - nothing led me to believe that they were more interesting/better/etc., or that the character would prefer them, other than the "hipsters=good, boring bourgies=bad" thing Coppola was spinning.

I guess I was more indifferent than hateful of the movie - but I'd prefer hateful, at least that's something.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 20 December 2003 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe Kill Bill is my favorite film of 2003 - I was so set to hate it from the trailers and pre-release press.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 20 December 2003 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

In American Splendor, when real-life Harvey Pekar is talking with his wife about their decision to get married so many years ago:

"I thought I was marrying someone funny," Harvey's wife, Joyce, complains.

"Well I guess I fooled you," replies Harvey.

I didn't hate Lost in Translation so much as I hated all the spooging that went off over it after its release, because really.. only half of it made for good viewing and the rest of it made me anxious for things to wrap up and cut to the credits. It wasn't a matter of my patience (which I tend to have quite a bit of when it comes to even the slowest of films) so much as it was just bad pacing and, hell, I can't even remember most of it now so that has to tell you SOMETHING.

x-post

may pang (maypang), Saturday, 20 December 2003 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

One thing I truly did hate though were all those blurry cityscape shots with playing. I mean, c'mon.. we get the picture, already! Beat us over the head with something else now, puh-leeze!

may pang (maypang), Saturday, 20 December 2003 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved Lost in Translation. Maybe it's a little precious here and there, but I enjoyed pretty much every minute. But my favorite movie moment was the closing shot of Carnage, with the little girl wearing the lighted devil horns. (speaking of muddled, that movie was, but it had some great stuff) Runner up: The opening shot of Lilya 4-Ever, with Rammstein or someone like that exploding out of the speakers and her stalking down the street.

spittle (spittle), Saturday, 20 December 2003 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Frodo walking along...unaware of what's right above him.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 20 December 2003 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

(I should clarify the above was my sentiment rather than dear DB's)

Ned at Brian's place (donut), Saturday, 20 December 2003 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

No no no, Ned, it was when Legolas bounced up the giant, killer-elephant-thing, cut the chassis off, and shot an arrow into its brain causing the audience to cheer (at least at Exeter Picturehouse yesterday), which was one of the most bizarre things I've ever experienced. They're not there! They can't hear you!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 20 December 2003 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Clearly, Nick, you hate fun.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Saturday, 20 December 2003 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

;)

Dan I. (Dan I.), Saturday, 20 December 2003 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The first step is recognising this affliction. With Ned's help, I'll beat this thing.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 20 December 2003 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

(Though it's really a 2002 film,) the endless and hypnotic shot of dawn breaking over Gerry and Gerry's heads on the final day of Gerry.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 20 December 2003 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

My fave obscure miserablist East European movie moment of the year was the 15 minute, dialogue free, one shot scene in The Werckmeister Harmonies where the townies smash up the hospital but stop when they find a naked old man standing in a bathtub.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Saturday, 20 December 2003 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

That'd stop me, too.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 20 December 2003 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The old man was suffused with a golden light and no doubt was a representation of God. Representations of God in obscurist art films, c/d?

My joint fave magic movie moment of 2003 was the torture / shooting of the small Brazilian street kids in City Of God, although I realise that saying it like that makes me look like some kind of sadist paedophile.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Saturday, 20 December 2003 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

camera follows a suitcase being wheeled through hollywood, onto an elevator, down a hallway and into an apartment where it is laid on the floor and unzipped, revealing four feet and eleven inches of gauge to the delight of three eager, big-dicked gentlemen.

^^--intro to weapons of ass destruction 2. highly recommended.

runner-up: what alex in nyc said; colossus really got a raw deal with that bit part. there would've been hell to pay in the second half of the film had the x-men hired a real babysitter and brought piotr along.

brian badword (badwords), Saturday, 20 December 2003 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

If you'd said "four feet, eight and a half inches of gauge" I'd have been really confused.

caitlin (caitlin), Saturday, 20 December 2003 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

James Caan's speech at the end of Dogville. Also Nicole Kidman all the way through Dogville. The bit in "Lilja 4-ever" where they dance to "Forever young", which I think is the last moment of innocence in it. The child torture scene in City of God is a truly extraordinary moment, though I'd hesitate to call it my "favourite". The scene at Bene's farewell party is pretty fantastic.

Tag (Tag), Sunday, 21 December 2003 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I prob'ly said this on the other thread, but the scene where Pippin is singing for a stuffing-his-face Denethor while Faramir rides off to certain doom fucking ownz my soul right now.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 22 December 2003 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Zooey Deschanel lying on the bed in the motel room, relating her childhood secret, in All the Real Girls.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

WHEN TEH FRODDO DIES AT TEH END OF RETURN OF TEH KING

TEH ONE AN ONLEY DEANN GULBAREY (deangulberry), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

when we were watching Matrix Revolutions and Trinity died and some dude in the audience yelled "Noooo!!! Whyyyyyyy?!?!?!"

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 23 December 2003 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Bill singing "More Than This" in _Lost in Translation_. It just gets me, especially The Look he shares w/ Scarlett. There's also the whole Star-Wars-lounge-singer-shines-again thing. I'm such a sappy sap.

Close second - Eowyn & Merry taking down the Witch King ANDOR Sam taking on Shelob.
