Also; how do you eat yours?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 20 December 2003 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Absolutely classic! Must be Heinz beanz though - I don't like supermarket own brand ones. Half a tin of beans, heated in a bowl in the microwave, and poured over a slice of hot buttered wholemeal/multigrain toast.

Occasionally, if I'm feeling particularly exotic, I'll add a splash of Worcestershire sauce and perhaps a sprinkling of grated cheese.

C J (C J), Saturday, 20 December 2003 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I like toast.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 20 December 2003 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

yas to the bit of cheese: grated.

better than a restaurant. hey, come to think of it i'm sure some trndy coffeee shop does this. no? with big ol' doordtop slices?

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 20 December 2003 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Not as good as tinned spaghetti hoops on toast.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 20 December 2003 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic. Agree with CJ only Heinz makes a bean feast. I like to get through a big tin and 6 slices of toast.

pete s, Saturday, 20 December 2003 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

mmmmmmmmmmm, butter must be involved too

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 20 December 2003 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I find Tesco's own beans, the owns in a red tin, to be more agreeable than Heinz.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 20 December 2003 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

No No No. Always Heinz, and if you're out... it means tesco beans with extra pepper (or even a vegi oxo cube) to heighten the flavour.

B.O.T Classic

kinski (kinski), Saturday, 20 December 2003 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Nean fascists!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 20 December 2003 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to side with Nick on ths one - Tescos beans are better than Heinz beans for the purposes of being used on toast. It's the beans to sauce ratio.

A worcester sauce is U&K in the preperation. Chuck a tablespoon of the stuff into the jug before microwaving it. Oh, and a HUGE slab of butter works as well - buttery tangy smooth beans, num num num.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Saturday, 20 December 2003 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

yuk yuk yukety yuk.

there are so many things that are better on toast than beans. Soft roes, for example.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 20 December 2003 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Love it. Toast and butter on its own is the greatest food ever though.

jed (jed_e_3), Saturday, 20 December 2003 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Personally, I prefer sphaggetti hoops. Yummy for my tummy.

Lovester (Lovester), Monday, 22 December 2003 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, toast is great. Plain beans are too heavy for me. I came up with another nice easy recipe-

2 Cans Heinz "cheesy beans"
2 or 3 large potatos, sliced
veggies: onions, peppers, carrots, peas, mushrooms, sliced
3 cloves garlic, minced
a few ounces cheddar cheese
Parsley, hot pepper, salt and pepper to taste.

In a jumbo skillet, heat the potatos with some oil and a few ounces of water- cover and let steam. When they're a few minutes from done, add onions, fry until carmelized, and sautee the rest of the veggies, adding garlic and mushrooms last they don't overcook. Add beans, stir, top with cheese and spice, heat a few minutes until ready, feeds 5.

sucka (sucka), Monday, 22 December 2003 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I love to mince.

sucka (sucka), Monday, 22 December 2003 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Take it to the gay marraige thread.

pete s, Monday, 22 December 2003 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Please cease this farce at once.

Beans on toast, honestly.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 22 December 2003 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Please cease this farce at once.

Beans on toast, honestly.

(actually, it would probably be fine if I liked beans for their own sake more.)

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 22 December 2003 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

please cease this farce at once.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 22 December 2003 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

when i was 18, my grandmother took me to the UK after i graduated high school to visit relatives. they gave me some beans and some toast, told me that this is how english people ate breakfast, and that if i did so i would become an honorary englishman. (i was like, "what, is this like the anglican version of a bar mitzvah or something?") i ate it and i liked it, but i'm a yank and i prefer a bowl of froot-loops in the morning so there.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 22 December 2003 04:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Breakfast? What kind of madness is this? It is LUNCH!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 22 December 2003 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

yes to stirring a big lump of butter in to make it all nice and creamy, plenty of black pepper too. Three slices of toast (thick sliced white preferably), all cut in half maybe a bit of grated cheese on top. Big mug of coffee, black and white war film on the telly - heaven.

chris (chris), Monday, 22 December 2003 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

HP Beans not Heinz, lotsa butter on the white sliced, douse with pepper = num num

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 22 December 2003 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

beans and egg on toast is the best.

or if you're daring, "the homer": beans, egg, cheese and bacon on toast (buttered). Literally not for the faint hearted, but oh the greatness.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 22 December 2003 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Bacon, egg & beans on toast was a favourite when I was a nipper. I probably put cheese on too; I put cheese on everything.

No one's mentioned curry or chilli powder in their beans yet I'm sure loads of my mates at uni used to do this and claim it was heavenly.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 22 December 2003 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I had beans on cheese on toast on yesterday & it rocked as always!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 22 December 2003 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

People who say 'it must be Heinz!' generally haven't got a clue about beans. I'm personally an HP beans man, like Ricardo. They're more expensive though.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never eaten this. Sounds like madness.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I depended on 'grub on a grant' for my first year at uni in self catering halls, where we had a cooking rota going on, and everyone always loved the baked bean lasagne. Lots of yummy melted cheese, and the pasta surprisingly firm meant it was just what was needed after a 20 min walk in a Glasgow winter late afternoon.

I have to admit though, the thought of making it now doesn't exactly appeal, I'd much rather have a classic b.o.t.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't be so hard on yourself.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

baked bean lasagne?!?

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I just did a google search and they dish it up in school dinners in waltham forest, very healthy.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I was once channel surfing when I stumbled onto a cookery programme where they were explaining how to make beans on toast. I was perplexed and confused for several minutes, until I realised the programme was aimed at the mentally challenged.

Then I went and made beans on toast.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i had beans on toast for my tea last nite (despite having not seen this thread until just now), with just a bit of worcestershire and grated cheese. also we have nummy big bread with lots of sesame seeds on the top which is top notch toasted. (fried) egg on beans on toast is definately one of the most comforting foods ever...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone apart from the Brits on this thread? Just asking.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

me, that's why I was calling "madness". Why would you want to ruin a perfectly good piece of toast?

Also the kind of beans you guys are talking about are just puke-irrific. I really only tolerate them at summer bbqs and the like. And then I just kinda push them around on my plate.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe my relatives are crazy. oh well, any time i've been to the UK i've had beans on toast for breakfast. maybe i'm just hanging with the british mentalist contingent.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to think the beans with a fried egg on top that some of my co-workers ate was a wierd combo, but I finally relented and tried it (Mexican style refried beans, over-easy egg) and it was delish. Never had beans on toast, sounds kind of unnecessary.

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Its hard to find Heinz (the right ones, in the cyan blue with the big logo) beans here in the states. I'm a huge fan of beans on toast, so I've managed to track down the few stores in the SF Bay Area that carry it. Top of the list is Yum on Market near the Castro -- highly recommended.

Colin Saunders (csaunders), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i like heinz beans best. and i eat it with a knife and fork. the toast has to be very very buttery
