Merry Christmas - or shall I say "Good Luck"

Is it just me, or is christmas basically a time of sorrow, stress and waiting hopefully for January? Even when I am not working in retail or customerservice, it still seems like the main points of christmas are
1. buy things
2. suffer crowds and traffic jams
3. be aggresively advertised at

ah man, there's also the good things like meeting friends and family, going for walks, staying in bed a bit later, reading in the afternoon and etc.

This year it doesn't really feel like Christmas to me. I hate all the shopping and lines. I don't like the music. But I guess that's what makes it feel like Christmas to me because this year I haven't run into too much of that like I usally do.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 20 December 2003 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr. Hanle y, I agree with your premise. Christmas now resembles one of those unfortunate humans who must be weighed at the local butcher shop, because no ordinary scales can accomodate their fleshy surplusage. No one is charmed by such a prospect, apart from those who directly profit from its grossness.

hmmm. speaking personally, this Christmas is actually seeming quite exciting and festive again in comparison to previous years. There was certainly more of a party atmosphere at work. I'll be spending more time out drinking this year than previously over the Christmas period, which should be good. It remains to be seen whether I get maudlin over the fact that I'll be single at Christmas.

but i think the fact that I'm viewing Christmas positively is partly coz I don't find it too difficult to distance myself from the commercial aspects, helped in part by the fact that I only bought presents for 3 ppl - Mum, Dad and sister. There was the usual "Let's make the panic over the fact that ppl aren't BUYING enough this year into a news item" schtick on the bbc...they then went on to reveal that the average Briton spends £500 on presents...wtf?

actually i love christmas, it's my favorite holiday. someone will always cheer you on xmas, and you can have egg nog and other things with nutmeg and allspice and cloves and cinnamon--the entire world smells good, and it's time for big comfy sweaters and bright colors. the lights are cheerful, the smell of a xmas tree is cheerful, the entire universe feels warm and comfy like a big marshmallow floating in cosmic hot chocolate!

Today is the 4th Sunday of Advent and this is usually my favorite time because it means Christmas is this week, but I don't have the Christmas spirit. It just feels like an ordinary day. Nothing special at all.

I did have a dream that I was drinking hot chocolate at school though. That makes no sense at all. Everyone was looking at me like I was weird. One of my classmates was asking me what it was and what was the thing floating in it.

One of my classmates was asking me what it was and what was the thing floating in it.

it was *me*, i was in it!

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 21 December 2003 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

No. Her name is Stephanie. The only reason I remember it was her is because she was right in my face and acting the way she always does.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 21 December 2003 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

damn, i always wanted to float in the hot chocolate at Christmas ;-(

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 21 December 2003 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually the thing floating was a marshmallow. Stephanie was the one asking.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 21 December 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

humbug humbug. I'm glad my parents will come visit though.

We have plans to rent the first two LOTR movies (so as to study up for ROTK). Lots of DVDs sounds like a good plan in lieu of arguing. It's not going to be a very festive Christmas this year because everyone has been distracted about my dad's surgery and things, but it'll be nice anyway.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Sunday, 21 December 2003 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Christmas Day will just be my mom and me. I'm actually looking forward more to when we go to New York than Christmas.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 21 December 2003 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

The main good thing is a solid 12 days without work, after Tuesday.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 21 December 2003 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been having great difficulty in being christmassy this year. I've been playing Phil Spectors christmas album solid for the last couple of days - I think its helping.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 22 December 2003 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I am definitely in a Christmasy mood, but thanks to this big move, I haven't had much time to just relax and enjoy the season. We didn't put up a tree this year, just this tiny 1 and a 1/2 foot one my mom let us borrow, so I miss the decorations and what not.
