Don't jump down my throat. I only asked if you were "thinking" of attending.

I'm undecided. Went in '02. Skipped last year.

Some dudes I know are going to be playing there. But I ain't going! Cuz I'm strictly part-time, and barely that! As of last week!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 22 December 2003 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I was, because some of my friends are playing, and for once, their touring coincides with my holidays. But it's too expensive, and I can't really afford to take more than a week off in the holiday before my finals. So I'm planning to go to ATP 04 instead.

SXSW is overwhelming... after you've been drinking Shiner Bocks in the heat for two days, seeing band after band after band for endless hour, you quickly reach a burnout factor... "Did you hear, they found Jimi Hendrix alive and he's playing across the street for free!"

"So? They have free ribs over here."

I got such a bad migrane that I was actually seeing *spots*. No joke. I thought I was having the beginnings of a stroke or something.

i *loathe* sxsw. The anti-SXSW showcases that spawn around TX in the weeks before and after are much better.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 22 December 2003 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

and you should drink Lone Stars. They're lighter and will allow you to eat more free ribs.

The raddest thing that happened there (in '02, I think) was when Aaron from Icarus Line smashed the glass case at the Hard Rock Cafe and tool Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar and tried to plug it in on stage. The security guards pummled him; Stevie is sanctified in Austin, they have a statue of him downtown. I thought it was fucking brilliant.

I'm probably going to go again this year... if nothing else to enjoy the warm weather.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I went this year. There's a possibility, if slight, that I might be going this year too. But I doubt it. I wish I could go to ATP instead, but it would be impossible for me.

And I definitely meant I might be attending NEXT year.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

one of these days, i will attend a SXSW, just to see the event. I've hit CMJ a handful of times, so the contrast should be interesting.

El Santo Claus (Kingfish), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going ... and excited about it. Particularly since my employer is paying for the trip. I've never been to CMJ, though.
What's it like? Anyone?

one month passes...
bump. I'm not going, my right-hand man at work is. Tips for first-timers?

My friend Ben is trying to decide whether or not to bother going - he's sponsored a couple of Bloggies prizes, and can't decide whether it's worth going over to present them himself.

teeny -- tell him to plan his evenings carefully. As in, take the booklet with the schedules and write down when/where he wants to be for each night and to have back-ups. The Supersuckers cancelled when I was there an I had to hit my second pick. If he's a nerd (as we all are), go to the panels and GET THERE EARLY, esp. for the big-time speakers (Little Richard, Wayne Coyne, Ani, etc.) or else you're stuck standing. They usually do a bag search. Nap after the panels to prepare for the long night. Wear comfy shoes because you do a lot of walking and standing around. And stay hydrated. Seriously. (The lure of all that cheap, fantastic beer is so strong, dammit.) If he were a she, I'd have a small sermon prepared for her, but that's neither here nor there.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Sunday, 8 February 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

well now I'm intrigued!
