It's all a conspiracy on the part of the leftist, homosexual, Jew-run media... C/D?

Prompted by the Gay Marriage thread...

Is there anyone who truly believes that prefacing an argument with a statement determining that they are in direct constradiction with some hilariously, grossly paranoid caricature of some imagined oppressive cabal diametrically opposite to their political/philosophical/moral beliefs, will make said argument seem any more convincing/less hysterical and misguided?

I'm thinking specifically of Roger Adultery (whose name recalls a slew of half-imagined/forgotten Viz characters) who ambled on about how his views would find him denigrated by "pink commandoes" and "Michael "Blinky" Moore and his legions of white privelaged armchair activists and limousine liberals". Whenever people resort to such ill-formed, predictable and ultimately toothless lampoons, I pretty much shit off from what they have to say, perhaps to my detriment.

shut off, not shit off.

stevie (stevie), Monday, 22 December 2003 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i would be flattered if anyone wanted to cut'n'paste that one to the excelsior thread...

stevie (stevie), Monday, 22 December 2003 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

No.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 22 December 2003 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefer 'shit off' myself.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 December 2003 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought his image of Michael Blinky Moore was actually really, really funny. But then again I kind of agree with it, so maybe in the context of this thread my opinion doesn't mean a whole lot.

Catty (Catty), Monday, 22 December 2003 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

shit off way funnier. especially in that context.

Catty (Catty), Monday, 22 December 2003 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there any point in reading the gay marriage thread btw?

The answer to yr question - this kind of thing is basic trolling; not that that makes the arguments either side any more righteous, it's just adding a spicy little kick to the actual points being made to get a response. I find it a real turn-off, it's the air of "I know what you're going to say before you say it," that gets me, just makes me think; well, I won't bother then.

Not really, unless you like faux-naif posturing or Calum's "arguments".

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 22 December 2003 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The other classic mystery of the online reactionary mind = "please follow this link (nb you will have to have an open mind)" (or such like) where the link INEVITABLY leads to fox news, newsmax, ann coulter, etc etc etc.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 22 December 2003 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

el diablo = otm. I read it, and that's 7 mins of my life i'll never get back. The minute you-know-who gets involved = thread meltdown

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 22 December 2003 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I am a total hypocrite of course as I use Daily Mail readers / indie fans as straw men all the time. Bad Tico. But I still don't like it.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 22 December 2003 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a fair exchange of views I felt, tho nothing mindblowing ...

Anyhow, My experience is:

A fair few people with 'bigoted' viewpoints like to credit themselves with 'courage', like we are too scared to admit we think the same way...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 22 December 2003 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"He's saying what we're all thinking!"

both OTM

i took that viewpoint to begin with, but when you think about it that's a way of saying 'i'll make my point, and if you deign to argue with me then you're one of THOSE people (insert caricature here)'. some points shouldn't go unchallenged, no matter who they're from.

although some people get their energy from blatantly attention grabbing trolling it isn't always easy to tell who you're dealing with, i think its better to give a troll something to feast on rather than let them labour under the illusion that what they're saying is in any way vindicated.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Monday, 22 December 2003 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

So was I a fool of a touque to try and read C-man's posts with an open mind?

Catty (Catty), Monday, 22 December 2003 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The thing is, I use the phrase "its all a conspiracy on behalf of the anti-Euro, pro-Tory media" all the time and yet it doesn't seem half as fuck-headed as the above quote. Possibly because the anti-Euro, pro-Tory media a) exists and b) actually has some power and influence.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 22 December 2003 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

shit off

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 22 December 2003 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

bigoted attitudes are really starting to piss me off since I keep having to hear them from people who were our friends and people in the family, specifically anti-jewish quips and anti-paki tirades. jeezus christ. it seems to all stem from resentment that these people have more successful businesses than the person complaining. Well hello, maybe some people like to fucking work rather than sit on their ass and bitch about what victims they are. Sorry, just venting.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 22 December 2003 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"third person effect" = comm theory that holds that ppl assume lazily that everyone else (esp people they disagree with) are way more susceptible to media messages than oneself is. "oh that's just fox news telling them what to think" "those liberals just parrot that npr/bbc/lemonde bullshit"

it has a lot of interesting applications beyond politics; a quick google: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22third+person+effect%22

g--ff (gcannon), Monday, 22 December 2003 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

g--ff (gcannon), Monday, 22 December 2003 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 22 December 2003 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Conservatives always do this - combine macho 'tough love' posturing with persecution rhetoric. One or the other, please.

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 22 December 2003 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Liberals always make generalizations.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 22 December 2003 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a message board. Get over last week's slight.

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

grr the COMMIE JEWS!!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Last week's slight = secret engine of ILx.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The thing is, there IS actually an organization controlled exclusively by a tightly-knit Jewish cabal right here on ILX. Somebody stop them.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The best thing about the Jewish conspiracy is that it exists in a sort of a boring networking way. It's less about controling the free press or influencing governements, and more about getting free dental check-ups in exchange for free accounting tips.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Free? Hah!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

bnw OTM, actually.
