Hi I'm sure I'm not the first come ask for help with this problem, it's an apedemic out there. That's just the way I see it. OK here's my problem have a bipolar condition and I do weird things like feeling well and then just throwing out my lithium because I think that when I feel ok then I don't need them anymore this time stoping my meds I ended in the hospital. But there is a problem that I'm hoping you can address. I'm addicted to gravel, yes I know that is strange but true. Any advice would be appreciated. I don't drink, I don't do any recreational drugs except gravel. I don't even know why.

Thanks in advance

anne, I'm not familiar with yr specific addiction but know all about throwing out meds.

Can I recommend another forum? The boards here:

http://bipolar.about.com

have been very helpful to me from time to time.

it seems like such a catch-22 when so much of the reason i take them is because of my eating disorder(s).

anyway: DO NOT STOP TAKING YOUR MEDS WITHOUT CONSULTING A DOCTOR FIRST.

jess: if you are taking anti-anxiety drugs and you feel like you want to quit, then they are obv doing you no good, right. So quit. My friend did it and he's better off now than he ever was when he was on the spectrum of uppers downers screamers laughers. You just have to have the will.

haha sorry that is a very simplistic answer and kind of jackassed, like you've never heard that line before, sorry

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 24 December 2003 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah don't listen to tom. also do as i say, not as i do.

seriously though, psychopharmaceuticals are an option, not a requirement, it won't kill you to quit them for a little while. I've seen both sides and while I can't say I've been there personally I can say I've known my fair share of people who wanted to get off the pills for the life of them and in most cases when they did they were better off. It's a matter of personal preference, given. Best of luck. I'm out (back to self-medicating with white russians ha ha right)

ANNE do NOT DO THIS!

Tom, Lithium is not a pyschopharmaceutical. It is a naturally occurring mineral that people with bipolar disorder are often found lacking. Going off this, or pyschopharamceutical medications "for a little while" CAN KILL YOU!!!

Besides the serious problems these drugs are addressing they affect your body phyiscally in many ways and you do not want to take any risks by just chucking them. If you want to quit a medication consult with your doctor so you can do so safely.

If you are still here Anne, go to the link I gave you and not this thread.

okay, I guess I don't really know what I'm talking about. Frankly though if you were unhappy before and you're taking a bunch of expensive drugs and you're STILL unhappy I don't see what the fucking point is, neither have my friends (bipolar, chronic depressive, adult ADHD, etc. etc.) so yeah, consult, but I'm rarely convinced that a person who's annoyed with his/her meds (meds of the head sort) needs to stay on them.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 24 December 2003 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

if i go off my meds, i feel like complete shit. I'm not going back there again.

El Santo Claus (Kingfish), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

She's not talking about being annoyed with her medications, she's talking about false sense of security. IE her medications ARE working for her but the fact that they work are making her think she's better already and no longer needs them. See also every single doctor ever asking patients to please finish their antibiotics even if they feel better half way through the course.

Sam is right. She needs to discuss her options with a doctor, not a message board.

I second that. Anne, the reason you feel better (like you don't need your drugs) is BECAUSE THEY ARE WORKING. Um, what's "gravel" by the way? Dang, A-zay just beat me to the punch.

Crack. Something else she might want to mention to the doc.
