I am about to ram a nail through my eardrum

And it's all my fault.

Because I am the worst son in the world, I only yesterday realised that my sisters hadn't hit me up for the traditional joint present for mum. It turns out that this year we're all getting her stuff separately. So on the advice of one of my sisters I went shopping at 5pm Christmas Eve, for a few CDs to go with the CD-player that my sister got her(!).

I bought her Please Please Me by the Beatles, because I remember playing it to her and she remembered liking it, and a Simply Red best-of, because my sister thought mum liked hearing a song of theirs once.

It turns out that she does like a song of theirs, but only one. So for the last six hours, she's been playing "Stars" on repeat. This is not a large house, and I can no longer remember listening to music that is not this song.

So, tips, sympathy, righeous indignation?

Stars is one of their better songs.

It isn't Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace doing 'Baby It's Cold Outside'.

Queen G! You're back!

I have a hard and fast rule about buying family members music as a Christmas gift: don't. Ever. They have a habit of asking for dreck that will cause me purchase pain far beyond any pleasure they might experience on receipt.

I did a thread on this on ILM but it was ignored.

However, my mother got my father a toy 'try with a steady hand to move a metal arm along a funnily shaped electrified wire without touching the sides and connecting the current' thing as a joke stocking filler present. It makes a loud beeping noise when you touch the sides of the wire. It also has no volume control. Father dearest is quite bad at it - either he's pissed or it's Alzheimers - so he's 'practising'. Loudly.

Why isn't your mom listening to the other cd too?

Aja (aja), Friday, 26 December 2003 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

it's broken.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 26 December 2003 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

How do you know?

Aja (aja), Friday, 26 December 2003 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I love buying music for my mother. She likes ACDC and Springsteen though, so it's easier. All I have to do is give her something from their earlier works. Anyhow, don't worry about it. Make it up to your mom by giving her gifts all year long :)
