Techie Qn For Broadband Users (esp. Nildram)

I installed my broadband (Nildram, ASDL modem) on Christmas Eve - worked like a dream, much rejoicing, downloaded fifty million MP3s that very day etc. etc. But ever since I installed it none of my CD Burning programs will work. It's not the MP3s involved as I tried to write a CD I'd successfully made before using the same files and it didn't work. I've reinstalled the main program I've been using and it still fucks up. Of course it may be nothing to do with the broadband but that's the sole thing that's changed about my PC setup between CDs writing and not. Has anyone else i) experienced anything else like this; ii) got a clue what's going on? The CD Writer I've been using is an Iomega Predator. Thanks!

does the CD-ROM otherwise work?
did you install a new ethernet card for the broadband?
i can't think how it could be related either way i'm afraid. try uninstalling and re-installing the cd burner and software maybe?

To be honest I've not had any problems. Sorry not to be of any use.

A few semi-informed questions/suggestions that may be way off beam:

Firstly could it be some sort of hardware resource conflict between the modem and the CD burner? What is the error message you get when trying to burn CDs? Is it something along the lines of 'cannot access CD drive' or does it access it fine then fail midway through the burn?
Second thought is how much hard drive space do you have left (if you have filled the drive with huge numbers of MP3s and the drive is heavily fragmented, could this have an impact on the burning process?)

Does the PC work 'fine' apart from this error? Oh and one other thought, have you tried burning when not connected to the internet? If the burns are failing midway I keep thinking it must be some background modem-related process that is interrupting the burn.

All a bit vague and speculative, sorry.

Thanks for the follow-ups.

The process fails almost immediately if I am connected to the net (or even if I'm offline but have the modem plugged into my second USB port). If the modem is unplugged it fails around 2/3 of the way through the burn. The PC is working fine - I have 13Gb of space left (of a total 28). I've tried switching between 2x and 4x to no avail.

The next thing I'm going to try is burning a CD on my old PC to check if it's a problem with the burner itself.

What OS are you running? How's the burner connected to your PC?

Ricardo (RickyT), Saturday, 27 December 2003 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Windows NT, and both burner and modem are USB devices.

i think david might have the right idea - if you have any unused usb ports, it might be worth trying a rearrangement of where the devices are plugged in. this might force you to reinstall the hardware drivers. at least i recall my hardware installations seemed tied to specific usb ports. if i plugged the printer into another spot it would launch the 'found new hardware' wizard.

but for instance on both my motherboards, the usb seems to be in two sets of two ports. any conflict which might be happening within your system might be helped by getting the modem and burner on separate usb hubs

Tom, you're probably hoping I have a response, but I don't, I'm afraid. The only suggestion I have is like Ron's - the main broadband problems I've read about seem to be to do with USB ports and conflicts. I use an ethernet cable and a router and everything is AOK.
