I can't believe I did this shit but fuck it, I deserve it

So, my Mp3 cd player just died this morning at work... I connected the power adapter to it while I was playing it. Dead on the scene. Nothing to see here folks. Move along.

I'm going to be on a bus tomorrow to Vancouver for at least 4 hours (given the reports of snow and all.)

I will not be on a bus without musical accompinent for my head.

So my co-worker and I went out for lunch and to CompUSA, and I got, by impulse, an 40 gig iPod (with renewable 2 year warranty) and a Firewire card.

I can't believe I just did this. I'm fucking insane. But I'm sooo happy right now. And I've been saving up money for quite a while.

...

So, um, relay similar events in your recent past and present that reflect this emotion.

I ate a whole cheesecake, all by myself.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

one of us! one of us!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

p.s. you should also invest in a battery pack--iPods run out of juice at the most inopportune times.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll worry about that once I get to Vancouver.. maybe I'll buy one there if there's a store in the vicinity. what's the longest a battery lasts by default after being fully charged?

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I just bought a direct-drive turntable rather than a cheap belt-drive one even though I'm not a DJ and will never use it outside my living room. It was ill advised because I just took a pay cut and had another kid and money is tight. But I did have some Christmas gift cash to spend, and scratching is fun, so I'm happy.

BrianB (BrianB), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The battery should last about eight hours...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

which battery pack wd you recommend matos?

cozen¡ (Cozen), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Despite being unimpressed with the several tracks I heard, I still bought Ryan Adams' Rock'n'Roll cuz fuck it, I want more Interpol/Strokes guitarplay, I wanna believe this guy is really great (he ain't) and I WANT TO HAVE FAITH IN AMERICAN GUITAR POP/ROCK, DAMMIT!

(btw, the album is really disappointing except for "This Is It" and the other song where he shamelessly makes his voice all shrill. Not "So Alive.")

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

My girlfriend got a Christmas bonus and we went out to eat, in the middle of the holiday season, at the best restaurant in town (rated one of the top ten in the country at one time, I believe). It was the right thing to do.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually the "I deserve it" part of my post is kind of ironic. I probably deserve mediocre albums by hacks who can't admit they're hacks.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought you got ryan adams¿

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I went ahead and killed two members of the Polyphonic Spree instead of just the one I planned on.

Now only, what, 98 more to go?

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

the battery pack I mention is the one they sell at the Apple store, it's made specifically for the iPod, costs about $60 w/tax.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought some £120 evisu jeans, wore them, recieved a handjob from my girl whilst wearing them (thus coming onto the little inside white pocket material), and i really want to take them back but i've lost the reciept.

x0x, Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

what are these like?

cozen¡ (Cozen), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought some really pretty formal clothes that I'll never, ever have a chance to wear but they were too pretty not to buy. That's about it.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

the reviews of the belkin battery pack on Amazon are particulary disturbing, the unit didn't get a single good review, and apparently it doesn't work at all with the 40GB iPods. Usually I obsess on battery life and I can't believe I didn't even think about it when I bought my iPods this week (impulsively, ala db), and now I'm all tweaked out about it. Is there another battery pack that works?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCK YOU

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, the link above (the cozen link, not the fitz one which you should avoid) is a dead link acc. to Apple.

So, there are different battery packs available for the iPod or something? Do tell.

I heard about the rather short life span of the battery operations that come with the iPod (about 18 months) and how people have been backlashing against Mac for being asked by Apple support to "oh just by another iPod instead", which is why I got -- no, REQUIRED -- the renewable warranty on purchase.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

My battery last about 6 hours or less. No fun.

TEH ONE AN ONLEY DEANN GULBAREY (deangulberry), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, it's a dead link because when you enter apple-store it makes it a secure area, so apologies. it ws a link to 'koss portapro stereo headphones' - what are they like? (you can find a picture on the apple store site).

cozen¡ (Cozen), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

why do you need the battery pack? if you're out of town & away from your computer you can always use the ac adapter that comes with the ipod!

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

because the battery on the iPod conks out at inopportune times, as stated above

iPod's Dirty Secret - The Message

This is the page made by the Neistat brothers who made a documentary on how their troubles with trying to get a replacement battery for their iPod which failed just after the given Apple one-year warranty. It was enough to get Apple to change their policy. Interesting read for anyone in love with the iPod, and an eye-opener. (note: this is neither an "boycott Mac" nor "boycott Windows" site.. it's basically two Apple products fans who were a bit displeased with their experiences with their broken iPods and shouted out about it.)

This page is the reason I got the Comp USA store warranty. (which means I can use my iPod as a racquetball pad, bring it back after it's broken, and get a replacement, several times, within two years from now, then renew that warranty after that, and on and on..)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Portapros are excellent - I got them on an ILM recommendation (w/ a 50% off coupon at the time - $25). The only downside is that they let in a bit of outside noise, but for my use, that's a good thing.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

DB, I know you said that your CD player died when you plugged in the power adapter while it was playing ... is this a common problem? I was unaware of this and I've already done this to my iPod numerous times. Perhaps I should stop.

TEH ONE AN ONLEY DEANN GULBAREY (deangulberry), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, that was a Riovolt Mp3 cd player that was almost two years old. I think I've done it before, and all it did was turn the thing off. Then I turned it on again, and all was good. Except this morning, it NEVER TURNED ON, and will probably never turn on again.

Having experienced frying guitar pedals by plugging in the power adapter into the pedal AFTER the power side, I've learned to plug the power adapter into the device first AFTER turning it off, then plugging it into the power source. But apparently, I got lazy and did it with my Riovolt cd player, and look what happened. Where's Pavlov when i needed him?

So, uh, yeah, Dean, you probably shouldn't do that, just to be safe.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The wacky thing about that Dirty Secret page is that it completely freezes my browser.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought a £200 widescreen television, a load of CDs of stuff that I've already downloaded, and convinced my dad to buy me a £180 chair.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought several sweaters in after-Christmas sales, even though I have plenty of sweaters already.

Even though I have too many books I haven't read yet I bought Denis Johnson's Jesus' Son after work.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

you should have waited to buy an ipod until after the macworld expo next week. they might announce cool new ipods.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 06:15 (twenty-one years ago)

has anyone gotten apple to refund the difference when they've bought iPods/computers and the price dropped a week later?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually got in on that deal (there was no way I could afford an ipod otherwise) and boy was it the best deal ever! ipod for $80CAD!!

s1utsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never wanted an iPod before. I do now.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

the reviews of the belkin battery pack on Amazon are particulary disturbing, the unit didn't get a single good review, and apparently it doesn't work at all with the 40GB iPods.

Well, there are only four reviews there, and one of them isn't even about the Belkin pack! I actually tried this thing out, and it seemed to work fine with the 40GB iPod I had at the time for review. And the complaints on Amazon are kind of dumb; why would anyone want to put a battery pack like that onto their belt-clip? I thought it was fine, but you definitely need a larger pocket. Of course, Apple could always just MAKE THE FUCKING BATTERY REPLACEABLE and allow people to carry extra batteries, but that would ruin the award-winning design, wouldn't it? Oh well.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

We were running out of hard drive space on the PC that Lynskey and I shared, so we asked a friend to order us another 40gig hard drive.
But we were drunk, and a relative had just died and left me some money so we bought the parts to build a second PC instead.
It was probably the best drunken move we will ever make.

The mate bought some stuff at the same time. So we spent £600 whilst drunk. It was a great feeling.
