Intellect is boring. Are You?

Inspired by the intelligence vs. humor thread...... My close friend told me that I'm too serious and restrain the wild unbridled fun you're supposed to have with friends. I fear she's right. And it's terrible, it's like she can't be free around me. Have you ever found yourself to be an intellectual bore? Do you ever self consciously cut down on the pedantic language and smart talk for the sake of being fun? Is such a thing even possible? I feel like I'm slipping into the whole cold/rational thing... and I'd really hate for that to happen.

My habitual discourse is tedious. My social interfaces have been undermined by my analytical rhetoric.

One day the same friend will thank you for being cold/rational, when all your other nutjob mutual acquaintances have flaked out one too many times.

I'm never boring.

False dichotomy: smart people are boring/fun people are dumb. I've met every permutation of those characteristics, even dumb smart people.

Some ideas can't be expressed without sounding like an intellectual bore. But, some things are common to every man and when people break out the 7-syllable words to describe a situation everyone understands in the most basic of terms, I think these people are desperate to show the world their great intellect. They seem self-obsessed with a personal agenda, as they work their affectations into everyday minutia. Sometimes, you can even observe these people grappling with different pronunciations of certain words, trying to decide which sounds more intelligent or proper. Being that concerned with your appearance means a person has little to actually offer, in my opinion, because they are too busy spending all their time on developing their self image.

This isn't completely related to this thread but. . . We were watching a bit of "Slacker" last night and it struck how much of the dialogue could have been lifted from ILE threads.

The advantage of the Net, therefore. We can create our own Richard Linklater movie without having to worry about a camera.

Whatever happened to the ILE Movie?

Nick, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm never intellectual.

james, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick - it's very hard to get distribution for movies these days. Plus the script was never written...plus we have new characters like Rainy and Jess to accomodate.

james, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, and I liked Nude Spock's answer.

james, Friday, 12 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nudespock is Genius, and probably has a great sense of humor too. Imagine that...three syllable words and humor...nah, that could never work.
