a new murder capital/crazy murder rates

It seems Chicago has regained the title of murder capital of the county.

But this is really what made me say "holy shit":

"In New York, the unofficial murder tally of 596 compared with 584 in 2002. That was a 2 percent jump but still made 2003 the city's second straight year below 600 -- dramatically less than the 2,245 homicides recorded in 1990."

I don't know much about murder rates or crime, but holy shit, 2,245 people murdered in NYC in one year?? What the hell was going on in that city that year? That's a huge, huge fucking difference.

also, Giuliani made all the killers move to unincorporated parts of town.

it was a zoning deal.

It's (not?) funny, Mann's joke is pretty much exactly what is happening in Washington DC - gradually increasing rents and living costs by building more subway stations and yuppie-friendly commercial zoning until all the poor folks are forced to move to Maryland suburbs (hence massive recent crime rate increase throughout Prince George's County and environs).

Well, what I said was an extreme oversimplification (for questionable comic effect) of what really happened.

Someone should do a study on the effect of no-cellphones-whilst-driving laws and the effect they have on drug and gang-related crime
