Which was the best?

Antmusic78 (Antmusic78), Friday, 2 January 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Two weeks in Bulgaria was probably the best... beautiful mountains, gypsies with dancing bears, and lovely flaxen-haired chainsmoking girls... insanely cheap beer... ah, it was like a backstage pass to Europe.

andy, Friday, 2 January 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Canada, Mexico

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 2 January 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

None of them. I live in the clouds.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 2 January 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never left the US. I should post that to the 'confessions' thread, as I am somewhat embarassed about it.

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 3 January 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Nigeria, Togo, Kenya, India, France, Russia, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Brasil, USA, Scotland, Wales, England,

if you include airports: Belgium, Zaire, Ethopia.

the best cities were: Barcelona, Rio, NYC and London.

the best airport was Belgium

Nik (Nik), Saturday, 3 January 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

although i live in the country I prefer hanging out in cities.

Nik (Nik), Saturday, 3 January 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

UK
France
Mexico
the Phillipines

I can say with utmost certainty that the Philipines was not the best.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 3 January 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

England, Wales, Scotland, France, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Finland, Norway, Belize, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Cyprus, Spain, Portugal, Guatemala, USA (27 states!).

The best? Norway, Portugal, Belize, or USA.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 3 January 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

And Italy!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 3 January 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I think we have done this before, but off the top of my head I think the full list is: UK, US, France, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Austria, Turkey, Greece, India, Jamaica. I've a notion I'm forgetting something, but I'm probably not. Favourite was Turkey, specifically Istanbul, but the only other place I could imagine living would be the US, specifically NYC.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 3 January 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"I have never left the US. I should post that to the 'confessions' thread, as I am somewhat embarassed about it...."

George Bush Jr. has never even left Texas. That "Mission Accomplished" carrier landing was shot just off Galveston.

andy, Saturday, 3 January 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

u.s., u.k., canada, france, belgium, switzerland, germany, italy, denmark, sweden, czech republic, poland, norway, holland.

i don't think i can pick a "best," but i like nyc, london, and copenhagen an awful lot.

lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 3 January 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

UK, Ireland, France, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Spain, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Switzerland. Some of those I was just travelling through though.

Best - France, worst - Spain, maybe I was just in the wrong bits of Spain as everyone else seems to love it there. I feel slightly ashamed that I've never been to America.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Saturday, 3 January 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Thailand, singapore, china, vietnam, fiji, vanuatu, new caledonia (haha the last three I saw on a cruise in 10 days but see how it doubles my destinations) I loved china even though I felt sick from the food most of the time.

jeska, Saturday, 3 January 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i want to travel more. places i've been:

i'm in the u.s. and have been to most states.
northern mexico
Amsterdam
London
Paris

Paris was best by far.

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 3 January 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I like France far more than any other country I've ever been to, dubious political situation notwithstanding.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 3 January 2004 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i've never been out of europe. i hope that will change soon. venice and london are the best places i've visited.

a list: venice, london-cambridge-manchester, ibiza, mallorca, portugal, various greek cities, gran canaria, several places in france, lanzarote, zagreb.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 3 January 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

England, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Italy, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Austria, Taiwan, Korea, Canada.

If going by number of times I have been somewhere I have to say London.

Carey (Carey), Saturday, 3 January 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Carey = American Gareth. I mean, seriously, you're in London every couple of months!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 3 January 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I know! I didn't fap with the Londoners when I was there in November because I was kind of embarassed by how much I am in town.

Carey (Carey), Saturday, 3 January 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Japan
Thailand
Philippines
Korea
Micronesia
Indonesia
Ghana
Egypt
Syria
Turkey
Italy
France
Germany
The Netherlands
Belgium
Luxemburg
Canada
Mexico
Cuba

France was the least likeable, followed by Cuba. I've had the most fun in Japan and Mexico.

lucas (lucas), Saturday, 3 January 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only made to 3 states of our southern neighbour. But I have made it to 6 of our own provinces streching 3800 km. Which isn't much considering St John's to Victoria is 7300kms. I need to get out more but it doesn't help when a flight to London, Engerland is often cheaper than one to Halifax.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 3 January 2004 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

All you travellers and yet none of you have been to Australia... interesing :)

I'vce only been to the UK. Ive also been to Singapore and Dubai if you count airports (flying over the desert at sunrise was amazingly pretty).

Its not so easy for us to just hop on a train and go to another country, so its pronbably quite common for an Australian to never leave home turf. I wish it was easier/cheaper to see the world from here.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 3 January 2004 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

All you travellers and yet none of you have been to Australia... interesing :)

Hey, I have, dangit! And New Zealand, Canada, the UK, Ireland and France.

Which is rubbish, but I am hopefully going to make it to the US this year to visit my brother.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 3 January 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

You've done better than me, Ailsa: England, Wales, Scotland, France and Germany; and driven through Belgium and the Netherlands without stopping.

UK, US, Canada, France, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Greece, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Russia, Kazakhstan, Nepal, India, South Africa, Jamaica, St Lucia. The Netherlands if airports count, Martinique if Airports in DOM/TOMs count.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Saturday, 3 January 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh --- and JAPAN last year. My fave.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Saturday, 3 January 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

been to more than one city in: thailand, malaysia, vietnam, philippines, france, spain, italy, croatia

and also: berlin, london, ensenada (border town in mexico), hong kong, amsterdam

passed through these en route to somewhere else: tokyo, belgium, luxemburg

favs: barcelona, london, antibes (france), berlin, malaysia, phuket (thaliand), dubrovnik (croatia)

least favs: madrid (that places sucks so much ass), ensenada (it's only redeeming qualities are the churros and the fact that you can buy brass knuckles and swithblades there)

Jacky Tran (waxyjax), Saturday, 3 January 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Texas and New Mexico. I visited those countries not too long ago.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Saturday, 3 January 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

ensenada (border town in mexico)

that must have been *after* California's recent annexation of Northern Mexico

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 3 January 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm from the US but have yet to make it to any place east of the Mississippi. I've spent practically all my life somewhere in the western half of this country. The West is my home.

I've been to Mexico. Hated it then. Probably would just find it extremely boring now. *yawn* (Why do my foreign relatives have to come from there?)

I've been to Canada (specifically, Vancouver and Victoria). Loved it then. Probably would still love it now.

I've been to England. That was my "once in a lifetime" trip -- unless I end up getting to travel loads more than expected in the future. I'd been dreaming about going there since I was a small girl, so getting to spend several weeks there was a dream come true. It was everything I'd dreamed of and more.

Tenacious Dee (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 3 January 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Canada, England, Ireland, France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Hong Kong, Japan, China, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Australia, Kygryzstan (sort of).

I think Syria was my favorite. And Japan.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 3 January 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Depressingly, the US and Canada are the only places I've been that I'm desperate to return to. Russia (or the Soviet Union as it then was) was fascinating but I don't really want to go back.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread depresses the fuck out of me. Any ideas for how I can realistically jack it all in and go and see while already on the everyday working treadmill (ie not living with parents and not on a gap year).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Scrimp and save for 18 months?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

*slaps forehead*

Or, start an internet relationship with a girl who lives in Thailand/Japan/Galapagos (delete as per preference), then you'll prioritise all yr cash towards visiting her! It worked for me...

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

matt, i've found that it's just a matter of making travel a priority in your life. i know my list isn't as long as some, but i've done 6 countries and about 7 states in the 2 years that i've been living here as a student/working for a charity (i don't ever have a big income). i try to do a long weekend break somewhere on the cheap every few months, and it's really nice.

i'm sure you can do the same. do you have friends that want to travel as well? it helps to have someone to go along with you, although i've done a lot of it on my own...

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Spain, Morocco, France, Mexico, Finland and the US.

Finland rules.

Alfie (Alfie), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

You can get to most places in Europe for a relative pittance. Trail the net for cheap flights, avoid costly hotels and spend the rest of your money on dodgy wine. Wine based memories always enhance a country.

For long haul, you're at an advantage if you live in the UK / US / Canada / Australasia as 90% of the rest of the world is dirt cheap. Smells a bit, though.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

US, Puerto Rico (since it should be free, I'll list it separately)Canada, Grenada, Iceland, England, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovakia, Italy, Greece, Mauritius, Maledives.

All have lovely aspects, but I most want to live in Austria and Grenada; the Maledives had the most surprisingly excellant local cuisine.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Canada, the U.S., Mexico, England, Scotland, Wales, Belgium, France, Italy

I think Italy is my favorite so far, although I am pretty fond of Belgium.

Catty (Catty), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

(chronologically) UK, France, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Czech Replublic, Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Iceland, US, Greece, Romania, Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, Norway.

Surprise, surprise, I liked Sweden best, although Finland, Iceland, and Norway give it a run for the money. Stockholm, Prague, Bergen and Barcelona were the coolest cities, although I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited by New York. Germany and Canada have certain, um, memories. To be honest, I've loved something about all of the countries I've been, although Austria and Switzerland left the least impression, because I wasn't in either very long.

Next...Portugal, Argentina, Slovenia, Chile, Vietnam, Japan. Everywhere else. So little time.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 26 January 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey lady, you lady, cursing at your life
You're a discontented mother and a regimented wife
I've no doubt you dream about the things you'll never do
But, I wish someone had talked to me
Like I wanna talk to you.....

Oh, I've been to Georgia and California and anywhere I could run
I took the hand of a preacher man and we made love in the sun
But I ran out of places and friendly faces because I had to be free
I've been to paradise but I've never been to me

Please lady, please lady, don't just walk away
'Cause I have this need to tell you why I'm all alone today
I can see so much of me still living in your eyes
Won't you share a part of a weary heart that has lived million lies....

Oh, I've been to Niece and the Isle of Greece while I've sipped champagne on a yacht
I've moved like Harlow in Monte Carlo and showed 'em what I've got
I've been undressed by kings and I've seen some things that a woman ain't supposed to see
I've been to paradise, but I've never been to me

[spoken]
Hey, you know what paradise is?
It's a lie, a fantasy we create about people and places as we'd like them to be
But you know what truth is?
It's that little baby you're holding, it's that man you fought with this morning
The same one you're going to make love with tonight
That's truth, that's love......

Sometimes I've been to crying for unborn children that might have made me complete
But I took the sweet life, I never knew I'd be bitter from the sweet
I've spent my life exploring the subtle whoring that costs too much to be free
Hey lady......
I've been to paradise, (I've been to paradise)
But I've never been to me

(I've been to Georgia and California, and anywhere I could run)
I've been to paradise, never been to me
(I've been to Neice and the isle of Greece while I've sipped champagne on a yacht)
I've been to paradise, never been to me
(I've been to cryin' for unborn children that might have made me complete)
I've been to paradise, never been to me
(I've been to Georgia and California, and anywhere I could run)
I've been to paradise, never been to me
