And while we're at it, what do you think of band shirts? Cool self expression of your musical tastes, or desperate bid for indie cred by assocation?
What are the best and worst band shirts that you own?
― masonic boom, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
I meant... TWO DOZEN *PULP* shirts.
Band shirts are cool if you like the design and all, I don't see how it's a bid for indie cred (you're assuming that they're indie shirts! I have a Madonna t-shirt!), but like...here's the thing. They said this in PCU, but I thought it true before that and I think it true now: you're going to the concert - you do NOT want to be the guy wearing the t-shirt of the band that's on stage. That's just totally weak.
I have a Pulp shirt that's far too big, a Madonna shirt, and a Manics shirt. That's it, unless you count my Josie shirt. The best one is the Josie shirt, but if that doesn't count I'll just go with the Manics shirt cos I like them best.
― Ally, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
I wouldn't wear one now, but I don't really wear tshirts at all. Thinking about getting some done for September touring, though.
Once I was walking through Barnsley on a crowded Saturday afternoon wearing the Anti Nazi League t-shirt that Rage Against The Machine did, when they headlined the Brixton show (92? 93?) and five smartly- dressed men surrounded me, without touching me, walking alongside me the direction I was already going. They stayed like that without speaking for about 5 seconds, then one said: "never wear that t-shirt again here or we'll kill you." and then they walked away.

I have, erm... well, I used to have 4 Bauhaus shirts, 2 L&R shirts, and 1 Tones on Tail shirt, back when I was young and foolish.
These days I barely have any, and those I do have are promo freebies. I have 3 Dandy Warhols shirts, but I got 2 of them for free from the record company, and only 1 fits me. Poo. And I have a free Blur shirt from the same record company. I have a Primal Scream shirt that I got for £5 from a tout.
I have *always* wanted a Spacemen3 shirt, but I've never found one the right colour in the right size (sorry, I can NOT wear yellow). I want the dark blue one with the silver 3-pyramid logo, but it doesn't come in any size smaller than "dress".
I actually do think they're fine, if you genuinely love the band in question, and if it's a cool design. (and you don't own *20* of them) But I *hate* when you go to a gid, and you see people that look like they have deliberately picked the most obscure band t-shirt for the genre possible. They have such a bad reputation, because the ones you mainly see are the Marilyn Manson and Korn variety. I sometimes wonder if it's a bit pathetic for someone my age to still wear band shirts. But then I think "ah, screw it. I'm too old to care!"
Fortunately, I still have one Photek, one Underworld, one Lamb, one Orbital, one Curve, SIX Prince, and I have no idea but probably TWELVE Cure shirts left.
― Dan Perry, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
ANyway, Where's dy'all get them? If you don't want one of the 4 "Korn Rocks" shirts they sell in Virgin, there's absolutely nowhere round here.
― Graham, Monday, 2 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
I have a few. The big baggy ones make a nice night shirt, and the rest are nice to wear on the rare occaison I'm not at work. I only have one pulp shirt, one stereolab, one spiritualized, a v.old radiohead one that is embarassing to wear but comfortable, a couple of smiths shirts and 2 menswear & mansun shirt that my sister gave me -- again, kind of embarasssing but comfortable, good to do housework in.

My sister must have at least 12 Oasis shirts, she even went and saw the frickin' Black Crowes tour just to see them again and get another one.
I'm just wondering if Paul is the record holder for band t-shirts or if someone can trump 12...

I'll have to let you know tomorrow. I was trying to count them in my mind and realized that I couldn't keep all of them straight. I think I should get some food...

Okay, I had a few as a teenager. Mostly usual suspect indie bands: Smiths, New Order... I had a Housemartins 'Five Get Over Excited' shirt, which I wore IN PUBLIC! And a Wedding Present one, I now remember, it had the blue WP flower logo in the centre.
But I only ever bought ones that had an image that I liked, I wouldn't buy one to just merely show band solidarity.
Ah, oh no - I've just remembered I *did* have three LONG-SLEEVE t- shirts: The Young Gods; Faith No More 'Angel Dust' (nice birdie image!) and a horible, white 'Generation Terrorists' shirt which even had a replica of Richey's flower tatoo on the shoulder. Dunno how I got hold of *that*. I certainly didn't wear it often.
A minor favourite was a Headbutt t-shirt, mainly because the image on the front (two hammers in relief) was quite subtle.
And that is absoloutely it. And, other than an ex-girlfriends Prodigy logo t-shirt that's still knocking about, I no longer have any band t- shirts in my 'wardrobe'. Cos band t-shirts, on the whole, are DUD!
Oh, and the wearing of a band t-shirt to the bands gig is a Dud of the Dudmost.

God, I forgot, I made a t-shirt of the 12-inch of Jordy's "Dur Dur D'etre Bebe" for a party once, I've still got that.
I wish I had a Frankie Say t-shirt.
I once sent away for an Iggy t-shirt when I was in high school and when it arrived I was horrified to find that it had the words "I Wanna Be Your Dog" printed in big letters across the front. I never wore it, I thought I'd get laughed out of town. Not many Stooges fans in Southeastern Connecticut at that time. What a coward I was.

Keep in mind neither of us has paid more than about $7 to see a band in at least a decade. He's in a couple of garage bands and everyone we see are of the same ilk: Immortal Lee County Killers, Wontons, Hatchbacks, Wiretaps, Catheters, etc. This is his daily wardbrobe. (well today he went to work wearing a rat fink tshirt.)
I don't have any problem with this and I don't think it's pretentious or anything. he buys the shirts to support bands he likes and is happy to wear them. By the time you're 34 you really don't care about your "cred" anymore. As far as size. . .garage bands are great b/c they make real sizes. My guy's small so he'll by a small size and then we both can wear them. :)
So final word: classic.

While I like Parklife a lot, I still think Mogwai putting out shirts that said "Blur are shite" was a nice move. So many meelymouthed stars, nice to see someone put a challenge right out like that.
The bandwear I have now, as a 31 yr old, is naturally a bit classier than my old Slayer shirt was. I have a Phish jersey that looks exactly like a Nike jersey except it says NICU stead of NIKE (from a song, you see-- "...And I see you..." became "N.I.C.U.") and I have an Aislers Set one with a nice little expressionist painting of scenic San Fran.
...All in all though, they're pretty freakin DUD as a whole.

Gildan 50/50 shirts: Are they nice and soft with a relatively thin collar like all shirts should be OR bulky and stiff with chunky collar like all shirts used to be?
I haven't worn a T-shirt that *wasn't* an American Apparel tri-blend in three or four years, that's how much I love them.
These are Gildan 50/50 and I really want one, but not if they're shitty, bulky, stiff shirts. Looking for shirt intel.

these are all over the thrift stores if you need to see an example. they're like 5.6 oz/ sq yd compared to 3.7 oz for the aa shirt, so i think they're in the "heavyweight" category. not really soft or thin but not the stiffest or bulkiest either imo.
