Thierry Henry + Animal from the Muppets in jazz club = coolest advert ever

americans won't get this, cos its from an advert for renault cars, and i know you guys over there prefer your own poorly built, unreliable american cars with terrible economy (unless you were wise enough to buy japanese). but anyway, this advert shows unexpected genius. you think it's gonna be another one of these thierry henry renault adverts, except in black and white and in a jazz club, but as usual he's gonna say a lot of stuff in his coolfrench accent, and yeah he looks pretty cool all dressed up in his suit. but then, quite unexpectedly and without cause, it cuts to Animal, sitting at the drums in the club, and he does a quick jazzy drums solo. i still don't get the internal logic of this advert, but its Animal, so i love it.

it's a great advert, but i sort of get the impression you thought about titling this thread 'please buy our cars for once you stupid yanks'

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 4 January 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

it's annoying that Henry STILL doesn't know what the French for 'va va voom' is tho

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 4 January 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah it was a cheapshot to take a swipe at yank cars. Im english anyway, and we can hardly claim a great car industry. mostly i'm just wondering what prompted the creators of the advert to put Animal in it. it makes no sense, and yet it works.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Sunday, 4 January 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be quite willing to explain 'va va voom' in French to Thierry. Alone with him in a darkened bedroom. That sort of thing.

But yeah, it's a cool advert. It made me smile, but it wouldn't make me want to buy a Renault.

C J (C J), Sunday, 4 January 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hey Bobby!"

Thierry, Sunday, 4 January 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I always assume that he is asking Robert Pires, when he says "hey Bobby"...or could it be Bobby Robson? And if so why?

It'd be better if it was Freddi Kanoute

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 4 January 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

does henry know what is the french word for dinosaurs? this is more urgent and key, as the recently revived frech films thread shows.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 4 January 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Animal as a drummer has va va voom! Isn't it obvious?!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 4 January 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"Name a drummer with va va voom?"

"Bonham?"

"Dead."

"The guy from The Who?"

"Dead."

"I dunno then... Fucking... Animal?!"

"Good call!"

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 4 January 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

don't forget the obligatory sniff/snort sounds

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 4 January 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Martin Keown can't play drums

arf, Sunday, 4 January 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet he can, y'know.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 4 January 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i didnt mean on van nistelrooy's spine

arf, Sunday, 4 January 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

it's good but not as good as the Branston's pickle advert that made me cry with laughter the first time I saw it

chris (chris), Sunday, 4 January 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Martin Keown can't play drums

Oh yeah?

Mooro (Mooro), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

well the ears are right but...he's smiling

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

He just decked Ruud.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Are we saying that this man doesn't have enough va-va-voom?

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Sunday, 4 January 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I've wondered about the Bobby thing too! Is it Pires? But I am impressed with the ad, even if I did think that, in the interests of fairness, the next Renault ad should feature a jazz drummer playing football.

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The irony here is that you take a cheapshot at Americans for being stupid and then you admit that you like a commercial because it has a talking puppet in it.

dean gulberry (deangulberry), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a very cool talking puppet. And it doens't talk so much as growl.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Animal didn't get a speaking part tho - if i were him i would totally fire my muppet agent

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Muh ner muh ner.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 4 January 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

It'd be better if it was Freddi Kanoute

What is va va voom? It is ze sound of my bus taking me off to Mali. Au revoir Davide!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

it was just on!

Thierry, Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

im telling you, only a frenchman would crack up the way he does at animal playing the drums; cf french obsession w/ martin+lewis/ outmoded forms of pantomime etc.

arf, Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

so which French fancy is next to entertain us in attempting to sell some product or other? I'd like to see Steed Malbranque replacing Linda Barker in all those whatever-it's-for ads for starters.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Mikael Silvestre would be good in Neil Morrissey's role in the Homebase ads, what with his gormless face and all.

pete s, Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Or Laurent Blanc and Zinedine Zidane replacing the sloths in that Specsavers ad...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

He may not be French, but i'd like to see Kanu personally reccommending me anything with a flat top. "I like it, because it's flat!" he'd grin

pete s, Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Obviously the ideal would be to have Pires featured in the John Smiths Olympic Diving campaign, going toe to toe with Peter Kay.

pete s, Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Basile Boli in the Werther's Original adverts.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

with Stuart Pearce as the grandson

stevem (blueski), Monday, 5 January 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

What's Stephane Guivarc'h doing?

He's lovin' it.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 5 January 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

incidentally my guess for the french for va va voom

va va voom

pete s, Monday, 5 January 2004 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Mu guess was "pretentious".
