Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 5 January 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve - this is when it's supposed to happen! Back to the good old days yadda yadda

chris (chris), Monday, 5 January 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing to do with Sky - it was just on live on BBC2 before the darts. Isn't it always on a Monday?

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 5 January 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 5 January 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Liverpool vs Newcastle is a goodun - I quite fancy Newcastle to go all the way to the final this year (like most years, then).

Telford vs Millwall GO TELFORD PLEASE GOD YES!

Spurs vs Man C/Leicester could really go any way.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 5 January 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Predictably the pundits were all salivating over Liverpool v Newcastle Utd being the money-spinner tie of the round.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 5 January 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

It used to be on the radio, then it got moved to telly, and came to be seen as yet another example of the debasing of the tournament, since it was done on prime time TV before all the matches had been played. As a result, it's been moved to the Monday as part of trying to restore the lustre of the competition.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 5 January 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The Rotherham fan at work is excited beyond belief. Or was until we reminded him of the replay still to be won. Still, that's likely to be the Beeb's Sunday giant-killer tie; Saturday night: Lpool-Newc?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 5 January 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen clips of a Northampton Town vs Man United cup tie from the 70s where George Best slips and slides over the ridiculously muddy pitch looking slightly sheepish as he puts six goals past them (final score 2-8). I bet they dig that footage out again if Northampton get past Rotherham.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 5 January 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

having the draw on a Monday lunchtime makes not one iota of sense to me, oh well

stevem (blueski), Monday, 5 January 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I just read out James Ball's post to my colleagues and passed it off as my own opinion. Now I feel guilty.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 5 January 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

George Best started playing left back after 70 minutes because he thought he was starting to take the piss a little and didn't want to further embarrass the cobblers defence.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 5 January 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

the thought of the chelsea players going to either scarborough or southend (assuming they beat watford, obv.) fills me with immense pleasure for some reason :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 5 January 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Scarborough is nice, but i fancy Southend, oh well

stevem (blueski), Monday, 5 January 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Southend should win that 3rd-round match.

Chelsea will beat Watford and whoever - or is this an occasion to dust off the word 'whomsoever'? perhaps not - they face in the 4th round.

The BBC's momentary suggestion that it was Man City vs Spurs will have angered Leicester and will ensure that Leicester City win the replay.

Leicester will beat Tottenham at the Walkers Stadium, possibly with a goal from Sir Les along the way.

I'd think Rotherham - Man Utd for Sunday, yes, but Liverpool -Newcastle also a Sunday game, on Sky.

Cup winners: Arsenal. Runners-up: ... Birmingham City.

the cupfox, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

also tipping Arsenal for the cup, beating Man City handsomely

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm banking on another clutch of big-name match-ups in round five, leaving a relatively sparse last eight, through which a toffee might slip. Seeing Bobby R's vivid reminiscences of the Robledo/Milburn Wembley wonders of the '50s on Sky Sports News at the weekend made me even keener to see a Toon win. Imagine it - 26 years after Osborne's slot-home and Wark walloping the woodwork.

Mention of the Six of the Best recalls that year's odd Cup innovation - there was actually a third-place playoff that year, United beating Watford in front of a meagre crowd. How many would've showed up for a Spurs-Palace bronze medal match, perhaps at the Valley, in '95? I'll tell you - two hundred and forty seven.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I would have watched it on TV instead, what with the near-certainty of Garth Crooks being on the panel.

I like 3rd-place play-offs including those of World Cups 1982 and 1986. I am saddened by the decline of this institution.

I nearly tipped Everton for runners-up. But Birmingham seem very likely lads to me. All too likely.

Predictions for Liverpool - Newcastle? Could the Magpies actually grab an explosive win at Anfield itself (a Shearer header, a deflected Robert free-kick), forcing the Kop into stunned silence and raising the red camp's crisis pitch to something quite possibly approaching fever pitch?

the cupfox, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

In a very real sense.

the cupfox, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a lovely thought, Cupfox, but I see a Murphy penalty in there somewhere. Preston my tip for surprise quarter-finalists.

I think we should go through all the possible FA Cup third-place playoffs with imaginary results. 1980: Liverpool 1 (Case 63'), Everton 1 (King 88') at Prenton Park, Paisley beats Lee at gin rummy for the medal.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps I'll wait till about 1986 before chancing my arm at these.

the cupfox, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I see a nippy Kieron Dyer lay-off to Shearer who knocks it in from a few yards out, with some abysmal marking from the Liverpool defence. Is Robson going to continue playing Dyer behind the main striker - Scholes/Van Nistelrooy style? He was pretty useful there.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

2001, Hackney Marshes: Spurs 7-3 Wycombe, Ferenc Puskas comes off the bench to net for the North Londoners;

1999, Wembley (Conference Centre): Spurs 0-0 Arsenal, Spurs edge post-match debate 11-10 (Bergkamp abstains);

1985, Comet staff car park, Rugeley Outlet Village: Luton Town 11-1 Man Utd (Scholes, Giggs, Beckham debuts)

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

1997 - Chesterfield 0 Wimbledon 1 - att: by 412 (300 Chesterfield)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

1993, Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Sheffield United (Waddle, og 13, og 42; Waddle sent off for fighting team-mate, 44)

the cupfox, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Forget it - I knew there was something wrong with that fantasy. He scored in the Final replay, for heaven's sake, didn't he?

the cupfox, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

(I don't know why I though Man U lost in the '85 semis. Suppression of painful memory perhaps).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

(Let's just abandon the whole thing, we're making fools of ourselves).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, 1993: Gresty Road: Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 Sheffield United (Barmby og, 88).

Expert summarizer: Daniel Amokachi.

the cupfox, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

(Yes, we are.)

(I can't seem to remember whom United beat in the 1995 SF - surely not Palace again?)

the cupfox, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean 1985? It was Liverpool, so:

Top Shop staff car park, Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village: Luton Town 11-1 Liverpool (Owen, Gerrard, McManaman debuts).

[Moderator: please edit to make this funny].

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I mean 1995!! Or have I got this one wrong... *as well*?

the cupfox, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.thefa.com/TheFACup/TheFACup/History/Postings/2003/11/FACupStatistics.htm

does not seem to give any info beyond finalists. I suppose I am missing out on some better source.

the cupfox, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

No, no, CF, it's just that I referred to the Palace semi defeat of '95 in my first post on the subject.

I think we're deteriorating fast. Someone say something about plucky Accrington, quick like.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

One or two top quotations have emerged from the 3rd round.

1. F Lampard: "I read in the paper this week that they've been working on getting the ball forward quickly and getting it up to the frontman, who was really good in the air. That was obviously their game plan and it worked. We weren't really ready for that".

(And he's talking about Watford, for goodness' sake.)

2. R Abramovich: "Chivu will come to England only for Chelsea and he will be my golden boy. We want him and we need him".

3. Andy Hessenthaler of Gillingham: "Afterwards I've gone through every single player and talked about the game. And I said to Bossu, 'I can't praise you enough' and he bursts into tears".

Goalkeeper Bossu: "It wasn't tears, but I was really emotional".

4. "The FA Cup is what dreams are all about" - Telford's Lee Mills sparks crisis in the international instution of psychoanalysis as a century-old theory of dream interpretation comes under teatime fire at Crewe.

the cupfox, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

5. Bossu is too young and inexperienced a keeper to play in important matches which is why I'm looking to sign another over the xmas period - Andy Hessenthaler in his programme notes

chris (chris), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I meant to include this one: a 0-0 draw with Colchester United "shows that Accrington's going places again", says former Barnsley and York midfielder Rory Prendergast.

The flying winger adds: "if we can hold our own against a club like Colchester, why can't we follow Yeovil and Doncaster?".

the cupfox, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

it was Palace again cupfox, remember the stabbing?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm... I'm not sure I do. Well, not terribly clearly.

A Palace fan was stabbed? By... Eric Cantona? From 50 yards?

the cupfox, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't imagine Liverpool have much of a chance against the Toon, or TS: Dyer in explosive form, running rings around the Southampton defence vs Kewell diving for a penalty against a 3rd division team.

I fancy Ipswich to do well if they can beat Sunderland.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Liverpool's FA Cup fourth-round tie against Newcastle will be
televised live by the BBC at 5.35pm on Saturday 24 January. Earlier
in the day, Sky will broadcast the 12.30pm match between the winners
of the Scarborough/Southend and Chelsea/Watford replays. Sunday's
live matches see BBC televise Tottenham's trip to the winners of the
Leicester v Manchester City replay (1pm) with Manchester United's
match at either Northampton or Rotherham live on Sky (4.05pm). The
third round Leicester v Manchester City tie will also be shown by Sky
at 7.45pm on January 14.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, that's not at all as I expected (but is somewhat as Mike expected). I can't quite believe that the BBC think that Leicester vs Tottenham is a Glamour Tie.

But then, Lineker ought to enjoy it.

the cupfox, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm sure Lineker is the prime reason they're showing it, but I think Man City will beat both Leicester and Spurs.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I fancy Ipswich to do well if they can beat Sunderland.

Yay!
I.e., I hope I'ch can't do that.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm so glad the Pompey game isn't televised, I've had to turn off the premiership match just now because the annoying twunt with the bells just won't stop. I want to shove them up his ass.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

leave him alone! the leprecy causes him enough anguish as it is

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Liverpool's FA Cup fourth-round tie against Newcastle will be
televised live by the BBC at 5.35pm on Saturday 24 January.

What does this mean for Everton-Fulham? Moved to Sunday? Saturday lunchtime k/o? Two clubs from the same city can't play at home at (approx) the same time, can they? Policing issues. It wasn't a problem 20-odd years ago, mind: I saw EFC beat Wrexham 5-2 in the 5th round as, across the park, two late Fairclough goals accounted for Bury. Then we all sat in Stanley Park and sang "Merseyside, Merseyside" until the bizzies sent us home.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Sky organise the next best ties to be available in case of bad weather cancellation, so I'd expect Everton-Fulham at a TV time on Sunday, as back-up.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

That Stanley Park tale is not... true, is it?

the cupfox, Thursday, 8 January 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
Astonishing comeback for City! i wish i had seen this game. perhaps they will beat Utd now. poor Spurs.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes it looked as if that ritual defeat at Old Trafford was in the bag.
But Citeh fought hard for that privelige and fuck 'em they deserve it.

pete s, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Before anyone says anything... anything

FUCK YOU!

And fuck Dean Richards.
And fuck Anthony Gardner.
And most of all, fuck David "oh, we are 3-1 up against an attacking, resurgent Man City side, lets take off Christian Ziege and replace him with another attacking midfielder" Pleat.

With knives. And skewers. Red hot ones. Typical fucking Tottenham.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Were you there Matt?

pete s, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Typical fucking Tottenham

reminiscent of the last time Spurs went 3-0 up against a team from Manchester certainly...my sympathies

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

No. I was in my local, being laughed at by the entire pub. Possibly I asked for it by shouting "it's like watching Real Madrid!" after Ziege's goal went in. Toward the end, random strangers were shouting "it's like watching Fiorentina!" at me.

I was in The Crown. Oh, Pinefox, where were art thou in my hour of need?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

sport hurts dude, sport hurts

chris (chris), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't I know it, Chris. I'm a City fan and I only watched the first half.

Daniel (dancity), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Blimey - it was 3-1 last time I was listening to it. 10 man 4-3 from 0-3 with a 90th minute winner. You couldn't make it up!

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

R. Littlejohn will certainly be saying that to himself tonight

pete s, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, my dear paws. I love football.

Tag (Tag), Thursday, 5 February 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

You don't need to make it up. It was predictable. I watched the highlights and at 3-0 told my toy rabbit that Manchester City were going to win.

I am touched by Matt DC's post.

the bluefox, Thursday, 5 February 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I reckon Martin O'Neil is going to be the new Spurs manager, it's just a hunch, I hope he brings Boldo with him.

Anyway, yeah, I had this weird feeling when I noticed that Spurs were 3-0 up on ceefax, like everything was going to fall apart. *sigh*, didn't know whether to laugh or cry, still don't.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely O'Neill would only go to a big club?

[ducks]

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

it's pompey's turn to rip into Spurs next. Pompey have already out played Spurs once this season.

latest word Harry will unleash the pace and the power of Lua Lua and The Yak and we will crush Spurs at White Hart Lane.

Midfield: the guvenor Amdy Faye will control things, and Berko and Smertin will have the skill to feed the strikers.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

dream on dreamer, life gets in the way.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 5 February 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope he brings Boldo with him

Who he? (you mean Balde?). If you get him, and you won't, the only player he is guaranteed to bring with him is his pet monkey Neil Lennon.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 5 February 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I was being fonetic, plus I can't spell.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 5 February 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Also no Scottish football probably ever gets mentioned down in England (I wasn't having a dig at you, btw). You can have Balde if you like, he would get sent off about once a month in the Premiership. Just don't take our manager!!!

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 5 February 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

A friend of mine who claims to have a friend who claims to know O'Neill's lawyers claims that he is lined up for the Spurs job next season. But that all depends on whether Houllier stays on at Liverpool, which he probably won't be doing.

Obviously this could all be complete bullshit.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 6 February 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)
