So other ILXors can patronise said establishment and everyone's a winner.

To start off, I can thoroughly recommend the K10 Express Japanese canteen halfway up Wardour street. I go there almost every day - lovely simple fresh sushi, fantastic sashimi including a heavenly beef carpaccio, marvellous hot, filling rice dishes, reasonable prices and friendly staff.

(though they might want to check whether Boots has trademarked the phrase "meal deal")

Siew May chinese takeaway in Dawlish, on Kings Street. They're house special chow mein is magnificent. I doubt anyone else from ILX will patronise it though.

(related question - what the hell is miso soup made of?)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Melampo

xpost: miso, hoisin, some kind of seaweed, dumplings, and one other thing like rice wine/vinegar that i can't remember?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i tried it once and it didn't really work, as if you couldn't guess

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer lies - it is made from Miso Soup packets.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

You tried EVERY type of miso? :-) There's several. I like miso-marinated meat.

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Bombay Express, Albert Road, Southea. Out of a number of excellent curry houses in Southsea, the Bombay has remained a consistent fave. The dishes are tasty, varied and large (and usually balti-cooked with lots of ghee so dieting is not an option). Most importantly, you can get a meal with a starter and a side and still have change from a tenner. BYO as well.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i end up at Spiazzo at least once a week. it's an italian place next to highbury and islington station. started going because it's convenient, keep going because it isn't too expensive and the food is good *and* we're regulars so they'll make us food that isn't on the menu if we want.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Barry, I work just round the corner from there - FAL?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt, I'd love a lunch/lager/love-in if you're up for it. At the place I recommended? Or a local tavern? Hurray! (must remember am on a diet)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The Kadiri kitchen on Willesden high road used to to a fish biryani that was a taste sensation.

Can Toby check if it's still there?

chris (chris), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Hello - Tobes has moved from the Wilsden area to the more genteel confines of West Hampstead (read Finchley Road), so um no, I don't think so, which is a shame, since I like fish biryani. He might know anyway, but the computer in his office is a bit fucked.

Anna not Toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread was intended to be about any purveyor of goods and services, not just restaurants. Southfields Garage are very competent, friendly and honest if you have a Citroen or a Peugeot and live in SW London.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark - yeah, at this K10 place of your... next week sometime suit you?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I am beginning to get a lot of pleasure out of The Arab Boy (as it were), my local pub in Putney. I shall be frequenting it more, I think.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Roccoco chocolates on the Kings Road, pricey, but chocolate heaven. Made with a huge amount of coco solids, also do odd things liek chilli chocoolate bars and chocolate Jersey new potatos with crystlised mint.

Also the charity shops in Highgate are pretty damn good for designer cast offs.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

How often do you go up the Arab Boy then Barry?

chris (chris), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

bad timing, cos i just discovered Presto, my favourite cheapo italian restaurant in soho (derek jarman useta eat there) has been bought up and totally refurbished, with a new menu and none of the old staff.

fuck.

stevie (stevie), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Gosh Comics - it's a comic shop, if you like comics.
Ealing Arts and Crafts - It's an art supplies shop, if you like art supplies.
Greggs - It's a sandwich shop, if you like chicken and bacon sandwichs, I know I do.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get the poor little matchgirl bit?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Magma is pretty kickass if you are a design geek like I am. It's a graphic design book/video/product store.

webcrack (music=crack), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i bought my portfolio protective case from Ealing Arts & Crafts

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Excellent!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Nobody listen to Anna, for she is Eowyn from Return of the King in disguise.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Have always been a fan of Banners in Crouch End.

one of my best friends used to work there while she was at college. she tried to take me there a few months ago, for old times' sake, but on a saturday afternoon it was full of families with loud toddlers. sadly not very hangover-friendly.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Thou has unmasked me as the shieldmaiden I am Lord Hand, but is it not said that Rococo chocolates may not be bought by man? Yet I am a woman and a box of lavender fondants sits upon my desk.

Lady of Rohan (Anna), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

(Tracer? What?)

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to walk into all of these restaurants and be all, "Wow, did you guys pull this whole place together BY YOURSELVES????? How precious!"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Eoanna, I was busy gurgling and sputtering.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

(Actually that was just the chicken in the stove, for I am too poor to afford even the quaintest joints.)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

(You never answer the phone anyway)

Slayer of Nazgul (Anna), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't recommend L.A. or S.F. restaurants on ILE anymore because certain people go all indie-cred on me and dis my choices for being too bougie.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I am *not* talking about Ned, Chris or DB btw.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

jas mart on st.marks place between 2nd & 3rd in nyc. street level is a japanese fast food cafe/bakery that's pretty unremarkable (panya around the corner is much better), but the basement is a spectacular grocery store that focuses mainly on asian junk/snack food and beauty products! so many potentially delicious and bad for you brightly colored bags of treats that it's a bit overwhelming. and then there's the freezer cases... the novelty ice cream! good lord. plus they sell liquid eyeliner that's black at one end and white at the other, with a little diagram that shows how to apply for maximum panda-ness. if only there was a bar, i'd be moving in.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

what does a man have to do to get some tang round here?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Ting is better

chris (chris), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Nobody listen to Anna, for she is Eowyn from Return of the King in disguise.

You mean she kicks even more ass than before? Why do you not tell us these things more often, Tracer?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 January 2004 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.ifsandsbutts.com/
