Are animal reaction shots still cheesy when the animals are reacting to other animals?

Saccarine and cheesy, which is worse

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of us like a little sugar with our brie, Nichole.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Adam, better to chase the brie with a glass of White. In other words, toss a coin and keep only one of them.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

what?

@j@ (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Choose the kitty OR the dog: having both in the same pic is sweetness overload.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

But then he would have nobody to talk to and/or have adventures with.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Benji survived his solo trips....but I'm just cynical

Pet Sematary vs Cujo

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 8 January 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

God I couldn't watch this movie when I was three. I cried whenever I saw the cat yowling for help whilst floating downstream. (Naturally my brother played this movie as often as possible when I was in the room)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 8 January 2004 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, you allowed yourself to be traumatized by Milo and Otis!? Do you currently live under your bed?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 8 January 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

This is like the greatest movie ever, it's so cute it makes me want to die.

Allyzay, Thursday, 8 January 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

shut up

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 8 January 2004 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

This is Sarah (sorry for hogging the laptop, Nick) - Milo and Otis is GREAT! BEst movie ever!!! ha ha. But seriously, folks,. When I mentioned that I loved it so much to my youngest sis, she was like, "WHAT?! Isn't that the movie where you see them have puppies and kittens? ICK!"

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 8 January 2004 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone remember The Journey Of Natty Gann?

ModJ (ModJ), Thursday, 8 January 2004 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha who was the pug, Otis? His wife was French.

does anybody know what actually happened to some of the animals during shooting?

ModJ (ModJ), Thursday, 8 January 2004 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

IMDB has someone claiming that they all died and someone else claiming that a zoologist did the film. The former sounds like an urban legend to me.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 8 January 2004 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

That there's a pretty tasty looking cross section of a cat's ass.

It's not an urban legend, the movie was made without humane society or whoever it is's certification.

sucka (sucka), Thursday, 8 January 2004 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

and it's a japanese flick.

Kingfishee (Kingfish), Thursday, 8 January 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it wasn't an American movie originally. It was a Japanese film and got re-dubbed (or narrated, or whatever you want to call it) in English.

But that doesn't equal animal slaughter.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 8 January 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

EVERY1 NOS JAPENESE PEOPLE KILL ANIMALS OMG WTF!!!!!!!111

Allyzay, Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:25 (twenty-two years ago)

(The Humane Society, FWIW, had issues with the film because, you know, they threw animals in barrels down a river and things that are questionable like that instead of using fake stunt animals, not because the animals actually died or were injured, which they were not--I mean it's not exactly in any animal trainer's best interest to KILL THEIR STUNT DOG now is it?)

(and FWIW most real life domesticated pets do worse things to themselves at least once a month for god's sake)

Allyzay, Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

They also lick their own balls. So what?

ModJ (ModJ), Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just saying that people shouldn't be so damned convinced that Japanese people slaughtered and ate Milo and Otis, that's all.

Allyzay, Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally's conceptions of anatomy astound.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing is, I don't even have balls! Unless the kids are calling boobies balls these days. I dunno, I'm getting kind of old now so I'm not down on the slang.

Allyzay, Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.grilling-recipes.com/images/grilling-steak.jpg

I dunno Ally, this looks like a mighty fine pussy steak to me...

ModJ (ModJ), Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

mmmm, that lemony tang!

Kingfishee (Kingfish), Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

OK has no one told anyone on ILX that "fish=poontang" jokes are really, really junior high?

Allyzay, Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The fact that they're my previous girlfriends should tell you something without having to look very far, right?

ModJ (ModJ), Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

So what you're saying is that the day you find a girl who doesn't have nasty stank cooch is the day you get married forever and ever? You need to start hooking up in better joints, Mr. The Mod. Places where people have bathing practices.

Allyzay, Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

ihavetowonder@aboutyourpreviousgirlfriends.com

The fact that they're my previous girlfriends should tell you something without having to look very far, right?

Previous, meaning they aren't around anymore, inferring that I did something, perhaps because along the line they discovered my habit of making crass remarks like "pussy steak," etc.

http://www.grilling-recipes.com/images/grilling-steak.jpg

Deal. Wut.

ModJ (ModJ), Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

No, no, it's too late, deary, now it'll be forever known that every girl you ever dated had some kind of horrible STD or something. Way to go!! If it's on the internet, it's totally true, too.

This is the worst thread ever, poor Milo and Otis.

Allyzay, Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Meh.

ModJ (ModJ), Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Milo was the cat.

This movie has that special magic of something you haven't seen since first-grade but remember fondly. Someday I'll have to inflict it on my children.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 8 January 2004 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

you've ruibed my thread abnd I hate you all!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 January 2004 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

eight years pass...

I had no idea this movie was Japanese!

It is?!

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 9 April 2012 20:43 (thirteen years ago)

#100,000,000 in the series "threads I have no recollection of starting". I must black out a lot when I am on ILX.

Shitschnitzel (admrl), Monday, 9 April 2012 20:43 (thirteen years ago)

Didn't Dudley Moore narrate it?

It was because of this movie that my parents first bought a pug. Fact.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 9 April 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

Initially filmed as Koneko Monogatari (子猫物語 A Kitten's Story; alternate English title: The Adventures of Chatran) in Kitakyushu, Japan, the film was completely revamped, trimmed and westernized with added narration by Dudley Moore (Shigeru Tsuyuki narrated the Japanese version). Director Masanori Hata and associate director Kon Ichikawa edited the film together from 400,000 feet of footage (which is roughly 40.3 hours), shot over a period of four years.

The part at the end where milo and otis get ladyfriends and the ladyfiends have puppies/kittens is soo cute.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 00:15 (thirteen years ago)

Kon Ichikawa??? I had no idea

Shitschnitzel (admrl), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 00:15 (thirteen years ago)

iirc, they killed something like 40 kittens to get the waterfall shot

Wait, what? That's not very cute at all. :(

wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 00:21 (thirteen years ago)

rumors, hearsay, no one seems to know for sure. you hear stories.

preternatural concepts concerning variances in sound and texture (contenderizer), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 00:22 (thirteen years ago)

sorry, sort of a bummer

preternatural concepts concerning variances in sound and texture (contenderizer), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 00:23 (thirteen years ago)

seems likely to be an urban legend:

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 00:31 (thirteen years ago)

erm OK that didn't work, but google "milo and otis snopes" and it should be the first answer that pops up.

tbh the online pervasiveness of this rumor kind of reeks of 'those creepy foreigners, can't trust them not to torture and kill animals.'

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 00:34 (thirteen years ago)

i don't know. the snopes messageboard discussion leaves it an open question, as do most other investigations.

preternatural concepts concerning variances in sound and texture (contenderizer), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 00:37 (thirteen years ago)

tbh the online pervasiveness of this rumor kind of reeks of 'those creepy foreigners, can't trust them not to torture and kill animals.'

maybe, but the movie is kind of unique in the threats to which it at least seems to subject its animal "actors". thing is, these questions come up wr2 to just about every movie in which animals are involved, but they are usually quickly and decisively answered. it's the absence of a clear answer here that's disturbing.

preternatural concepts concerning variances in sound and texture (contenderizer), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 00:40 (thirteen years ago)

also, it's worth noting that the american version cuts some of the film's more obviously cruel footage, and that objections to the treatment of animals on set were (allegedly) first raised by japanese animal rights organizations
