Edinburgh Military Tattoo - classic or dud?

I've only seen it on the TV. It's entertaining, boring and bizarre all at once.

Dud. Ruins the city skyline for a couple of months. Frightens my cat.

six months pass...
They have invited the chinese army to perform this year. They will be re-enacting scenes from tiananmen square.

With Caitlin's cat playing the role of the tank defying student?

It is that time again. The "must do before you die tour" coaches will return.

TS: Crufts Vs Edinburgh Tattoo

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Crufts, because there's no chance of seeing Labradoodles at the Tattoo.

Fortunately, my cat now lives several hundred miles away. As do I.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Crufts wins. It is indoors, and does not involve fireworks or bagpipes. And doesn't last for a bloody month.

I was on my way up the Royal Mile one night when a policeman stopped me. "You don't want to come up this way," he said.
"Why not?" I asked.
"Because in about two minutes, ten thousand Americans are going to come pouring down that hill from the castle and you'll get stuck. You're better off taking the long way round."

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 30 July 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I reckon it's ripe for an atrocity.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 30 July 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I know a Tollcross psychopath who would probably be up for a bit of atrocity-causing if it involves tourists.

Here's a question: Who gets the money from the tattoo? I Figure it's about 2.7million pounds (ish). Does the council get it?

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess Scottish Heritage will get a chunk for the use of the castle concourse.

Yeah, I figured that. I think I'm really asking who runs it. Do the various armies get paid for appearing?

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Not sure - I actually think they do it as a showcase, and probably just get accomodation.

Can't see the Chinese army being paid, put it that way (with all the protest etc it would be even more controversial). I think it is a "here are us and our mates" thing.

It is a very good question, though...
