Taking Sides : Bedazzled Liz Hurley vs Bedazzled Peter Cook/Dudley Moore

Just saw the liz version this xmas, not as bad as I thought and more budget than the cook/moore one. But not as funny/insightful etcet.
Although I'm not expecting this to be a close thing, but on balance i'd give 25% to Hurley and 75% to CookMoore.

'bout you?

You even had to ask this question? My god! The orginal of course, pure genius. *julie andrews*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 9 January 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I was surprised at how good La Hurley was, and not at all surprised at how good Brendan Fraser was, but the remake suffers the curse of all US mainstream comedy movies, i.e. they can't resist making the Central Character Learn A Fundamental Lesson About Life by the film's end; thus it dribbled away into the usual sentimentality/everything-is-beautiful-in-its-own-way yeucch-ism.

Phoebe Dinsmore, Friday, 9 January 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the whole bit about Lucifer and the final meeting with god that is missing in Hurley's version.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 9 January 2004 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't the "final meeting with God" supposed to be that scene in the jailhouse with the wise old lag (not at all a parody of the stock Morgan Freeman role, eh?)?

Phoebe Dinsmore, Friday, 9 January 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

No, the devil to god "I'll make this world so horrible that even you will be ashamed of yourself"
God: "Ha ha ha ha ha "... film ends...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 9 January 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Also crucially the Hurley version doesn't have That Theme Tune: "You fill me with inertia."

(Off-topic though; over Xmas caught a bit of "Superman 3" and by far the best thing in that was Robert Vaughn taking the piss out of "the Robert Vaughn role" - you know, the smarmy corporate crook from Washington Behind Closed Doors, etc.)

Phoebe Dinsmore, Friday, 9 January 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Saw the Frazer/Hurley version over xmas like most people, they'd stuck quite close to the cynical humour of the original, but the two main players don't have enough charisma. On balance i don't thing making the devil a sexy woman works.....you can't really hate her.
Cook's devil is this cold-eyed, almost-nerdy, covertly-neurotic bastard, and you squirm when he makes you laugh.

pete s, Friday, 9 January 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Cook's devil is the coolest bloke ever - especially on the top of the pops rip off.

chris (chris), Friday, 9 January 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

It all depends on your viewpoint. Moore + Cook = better film, but Liz Hurley has Liz Hurley in a leather devil outfit . . . hello nurse!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 9 January 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"Just go away"

Cook/Moore own, as if it needs to be said - one of the best films I think I've ever seen.

Hurley/Fraser, on the other hand, er, isn't. But as mentioned above, it wasn't totally reprehensible.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 9 January 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Red leather at that! But still the sexiest moment over Xmas TV - Hedy Lamarr brandishing the whip over Victor Mature in Samson And Delilah, shouting: "He's mine to punish!"

arbitrary revive!

When the fuck is the PC+DM version coming out on DVD? God dammit.

Peter Cook & Dudley Moore are fucking amazing. I picked up a compilation of sketches while in London and am finally getting around to watching it. I normally find sketch humor like this so dull.

Julie Andrews!!

TOMBOT, Monday, 14 June 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Though it did become apparent to me that part of the appeal and amusement I derive from such humor is because I do not have to watch the Beeb all the time, as when we were watching Morrissey appear live on that one guy's show and it was all completely ridiculous, I think if my life had been spent watching broadcasts like that all the time I would be much less likely to find real humor in these satires.

The scene where Cook is a popstar and all the girls are going insane is hilarious to me no matter the context, I wish I could find that song on a record somewhere.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

There's been at least one cover of that song, if not more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

My entire memory of the more recent version consists of Liz Hurley in a bikini walking scary dogs. She looked HOTT!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Jools Holland. "That guy" is Jools Holland. That basically explains the entire interview, from what I understand.

Allyzay, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The scene where Cook is a popstar and all the girls are going insane is hilarious to me no matter the context, I wish I could find that song on a record somewhere.

It was included in the Mojo Magazine "best movie music" CD last year. It will also be on my 1967CDRGO due Real Soon Now

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course, the 1967 film. Eleanor Bron is pretty sexy, I always thought. Liz Hurley is great-looking, though. I like all the little bits tucked away in the orig.: "I didn't go to school, and I'm very, ah, uh, ummm, ah..." "Inarticulate." "Yes...I think so..."

You can get the soundtrack to the '67 film. Harkit reissued it a few years back, but caveat: lousy, lousy mastering (perhaps they've improved it since then?). I burned a copy of the original LP, and it's amazing.

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Nick Cave and Lydia Lunch covered it - but that might be a mislabelled MP3. Sounds like them...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I have this:

It is nick cave, but ostensibly its a single by anita somebody. The a side is called something like "is a girl" and the b-side has the two of them doing Bedazzled, and an english translation of "JeTaime" i.e "I love you / Me neither"

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Anita Lane - The world's a Girl. There you go.

The Bongwater version of the Bedazzled theme tune on The Power Of Pussy is tremendous.

The Nick Cave/Anita Lane cover of Bedazzled misses the point completely.
DVD should be arriving from amazon.co.uk soon! Fuck you America! Region Zero!

Dr Morbius, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

Srsly Hurley is wretched in the remake. Love Brendan Fraser tho.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 17 September 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

This is basically the last time Liz Hurley was hot, right?

milo z, Monday, 17 September 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

Right:

I got an inexpensive copy of Judy Huxtable's "Loving Peter", which is an entertaining and etc read.. I also dug out the Derek and Clive VHS that I got recently for 99p but hadn't watched, it's hard going but less 'anti-Dudley' than I was led to believe.

Oh, and I saw "Bedazzled" the Liz version recently.

Revised opinion: It's crap. Especially as a couple days previously the BBC played the Cook/Moore version, and I was stuck to it once again.

(Well, it was either revive this one or the "talk like Derek and Clive" one)

Mark G, Thursday, 27 November 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

I think this and "The Producers" are the only two films where I could probably recite the entire script off the top of my head

Christ, is this five years ago already?

Never subsequently re-seen the Hurley one but I suspect MG is correct here.

Funnily enough, the Hurley Bedazzled was on again last night.

Mark G, Friday, 28 November 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

Watched half of it again. It is quite okay, and I know the point of Hurley isn't to do the acting, but jeesus she can't act.

Me and Ruth Lorenzo, Rollin' in the Benzo (Noodle Vague), Friday, 28 November 2008 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

she's a curious mix of the greatest and worst thing ever simultaneously.
