do the seasons have an smell?

and no. i don't mean collective cultural memory smells (punkin pie, etc.) i mean an actual, physical odor which smells like the season and nothing else. i was driving yesterday afternoon with the windows down (being an ungodly almost 80 degrees here in pa...where's the fuckin' chill already??), through a nice, dense, wooded area of my locality (its actually all wooded...fall is painfully beautiful here) and i realized...taking a whiff...with no houses or biznesses or factories or other cars around...that it SMELLED LIKE AUTUMN. but i couldn't for the life of me articulate what the smell was...

September smells very special here. It smells of fresias and jasmine. No other season smells quite so nice.

toraneko, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe there was something stuck to your nose.

for some reason I just spent like an hour frantically looking for pictures from the film "The Blue Lagoon"

I think the smell of seasonal change could be most likely attributed to the change in plant activity. I'm not going to be an ass and assume that I can explain that any further, but i think it plants must be the answer. On a different note, one of my painting teachers (a recovered alchoholic) describes his favorite polish vodka as tasting like the smell of summer. Now that's love.

winter = smell of flanaleete shirts, autumn the smell of acid rain, summer the stench of miestrone bo, and spring the smell of magnum ego icecreams coming home to roost.

yes, I think the seasons did have smells...but wait, I don't think we have 'proper' seasons anymore...the mono-season stinks!

james, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We must be stealing your seasons because ours have become twice as extreme.
It get so bloody hot in summer (>40) that it isn't possible to even imagine winter. It's not just hot either, it's dry too and then a north wind blows up and it's as if a giant has got a hair dryer and is torturing all us poor little humans with it.
Autumn just gets drier and drier.
Then winter comes along and it is fucking freezing! And it's windy. And it is impossible to imagine ever being warm again.
Towards the end of winter it starts to rain a bit and then September!!!!!!!!! I love September. Fresias and jasmine and even daffodils and narcissus! Every one gets narky and stuff because of all the upwards-rising spring energy and the lambs start bouncing in the paddocks and even the adult sheep go slightly mad!
Actually spring is a bit weird because it will be 25 to 28 for a week and really sunny and then suddenly it is 10 and wet again. I kind of like the changability though.

I said ice has a smell, and Dunedin smells like ice.

maryann, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dunedin also has the cadbury factory, part of Dunedin smells like chocolate. And another part smells like beer.

maryann, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hmmmm. dose dunedin come before or after autumn?

jess, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dunedin has intriguing street walks.

rainy, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

autumn smells like lit fireplaces.

Sam-at-home, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's always after autumn here except for one day when the sun accidentally got warm.

maryann, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And that day that snow accidentally fell out of the sky.

rainy, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah but you accidentally wore hotpants that day

maryann, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i suspect the polish vodka referred to is the head-clearing "dzubrovka" (sp?) with the bison on the front of the bottle. a friend brought some back last summer from a visit there; it's got a faint whiff of peach.

i further suspect that the autumn smell you notice, jess, can be attrubted to college girls :)

Tracer Hand, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I was smellin' that today, that autumn smell. I was telling my girlfriend how it reminds me of high school, going to and coming from school. It makes me feel yikky, for lack of a better word, the way September did when I was in high school. I didn't want to be in school. Most of the seasons still sort of remind me of school, actually, but fall in particular because it's back to school season, I guess.

Nude Spock, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that reminds me of this really funny thing that happened in Dunedin one day.

maryann, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, that ineluctable autumnal smell of leaves falling on hotpants.

rainy, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Winter smells of smoke.

bnw, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Spring is the only season with its own indescribable smell, but there are smells I identify with the other seasons. Summer is sunshine (it does have a smell), autumn is dry leaves and apple cider, winter is actually just a very cold nose.
