Surely, their catalogue is classic. But infomercials aside .. has anyone ever bought anything from them? If so, what did you buy and did you enjoy it? Is the quality good?

Twenty bucks is deal for some of the longer DVDs and a rip off for some of the shorter ones ... and thats without even knowing what the quality is of the DVD-R.

Also, if you've ordered from them before ... how's their service? Are they reliable?

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard it's strictly bottom-of-the-barrel. I've seen their VHS Jeanne Dielman and, though it's OK in terms of watching the film itself, loses you on about 70% of the subtitles. (Good thing there's about a collective 14 minutes of dialogue in the three-hour film.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I've purchased their versions of Skidoo and Can Dialectics Break Bricks and thought that both were OK. Skidoo apparently comes from the VSOM tape (which itself is pretty high quality) and Can Dialectics Break Bricks is actually of better quality than the one tape I've seen.

Your mileage may vary of course, but I'd purchase from them again.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm assuming you bought from them online then?

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I am going to buy these, I suppose:

GIMME GIMME OCTOPUS - The most accurate summary of this late 60's Japanese kids show we have read states: "An octopus and a peanut are in love with the same walrus." Playing kind of like a Sesame Street segment on an entire sheet of acid, Gimme Gimme Octopus boggles the mind with it's impenetrable story lines and bizarro characters. In one segment the octopus and the walrus steal a sleeping dragons smoking bowl. They then sit in a tree and sniff the smoke. Soon their eyelids are half open and they seem to be laughing and swaying back and fourth. Makes the Mighty Mouse magic dust controversy seem tame in comparison.

THE DINAH SHORE PORTAL TO HELL - great comp to entertain guests. This collection is a veritable cavalcade of celebrity horror mixing misguided singing attempts that actually aired on national TV via the Dinah Shore Show. You’ll see the likes of William Shatner, John Travolta, Dick Clark, Herve Villechaize, Robert Blake, Terry Bradshaw and many more make complete assholes of themselves! Oh, the embarrassments! Plus you’ll get an amazing collection of bloopers featuring Siskel and Ebert cussing each other out, James Brown babbling in a PCP fueled haze, Richard Pryor in an interview going nowhere just moments after snorting an 8-ball for lunch on the set of Stir Crazy, Sly Stone whacked out of his mind on LSD on the Dick Cavet show, and more!

GOD'S ANGRY MAN - God’s Angry Man is Werner Herzog's brilliant documentary on the great Dr. Gene Scott, electric church evangelist extraordinaire. Dr. Scott has his own TV station and satalite which he uses to broadcast his personal interpretations of the word of the lord any time of day he feels like. He yells at his congregation for not working hard enough, he screams at his viewers for not sending in enough money and he says that "as long as babies and dogs like me, I must be doing something right" and “we need more money to get that race horse!” Herzog has chosen his focus well, finding numerous contradictions, emotions and outrageous personality that all seem to radiate intensely from Scott. This film is another prime example of the one constant filmatic staple you can find in almost all Herzog movies: the constant struggle to find the thin line between insanity and enlightenment, something he still seems to be searching for today.

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

THE LAND OF SILENCE AND DARKNESS - Detailing the lives of numerous people who are deaf, mute and blind, Werner Herzog finds the true elements of life that make it pure and sometimes beautiful. Of course, with subject matter like this, it's hard to stray away from the grim reality of it all, but Herzog manages to show the reality in a way that makes life seem more palatable. In reference to this film Herzog was quoted as saying: "Some who live in this land have learned to speak, though they communicate with each other by touch language: what they say comes from the most profound depths of human experience, and is often startlingly beautiful and exiting. This is not a depressing movie at all. Neither is it a movie for voyeurs of the grotesque. As Anita Earle writes, 'It is, rather, a testament from another plane of existence'"

PERMANENT VACATION, plus SHORTS - Made two years prior to Stranger Than Paradise, Jim Jarmusch made this independent meditation on New York City and Jazz music as his film thesis for NYU. The story concerns a young boy whose Father is not around and whose Mother is institutionalized. His only method of escape is through Charley Parker records. Subconsciously, he searches for more meaning in his life and discovers there is more to existence then he thought. Also included on this disc: Rare Jarmusch short films Coffee And Cigarettes (starring Roberto Benigni & Steven Wright); Coffee and Cigarettes: Memphis Story (starring Steve Buschemi) and Coffee and Cigarettes: Somewhere in California (starring Tom Waits and Iggy Pop).

TURKISH STAR WARS - For anyone who has not seen any Turkish cinema, Turkish Star Wars is certainly the best barometer you can find. Using actual footage from the original Star Wars, the story is about 2 space fighter pilots who are shot down over a desert planet and discover a colony of people who are being oppressed by horse back riding mutant savages! It's up to them to save the people from the oppressive mutants! Combining life size evil Muppets with a Flash Gordon like bad guy; and stealing not only footage and soundtrack from Star Wars, but music from Indiana Jones and others.

Do you recommend VSoM?

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you recommend VSoM?

Never purchased anything from them, but a search of Google Groups (especially alt.cult-movies) would be advisable.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought Melody Nelson from them on VHS. Video quality was B / Content A++.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Jay Vee, from VSoM or from 5MO?

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Why in gods name is Bad Boy Bubby in the international list? Not only is it not a "lost to the public" film (its arthouse, but well known here and gets shown at arthouse cinemas quite often), its a really bloody good film and, I am pretty sure, available on DVD anyway.

I'd very much recommend anyone seeing it. If this list is trash bgrade films I'm rather disapointed they've snuck that film in there :(

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Winner of countless awards including the Venice film festival's coveted Grand Jury Prize, this unforgettable movie experience traces the life of a man called Bubby. For 35 years, Bubby's entire knowledge of the universe has stopped at the walls of an inner city two-room slum. He knows only of the existence of himself and his mother and spends his day playing with cockroaches and eduring sexual relations with his mother. Then one day, dad comes home. Suddenly the universe is a more complicated place than Bubby had thought; and all his ideas about life and behavior are overthrown in a wild revolution where, for the first time, Bubby ventures outside.

Bad Boy Bubby is a clever variation on the Kasper Hauser story and it remains one of the wildest movies to come from Australia in a long time. Filled with wildly offensive images, a biting and sardonic wit and a surprisingly human touch, Bad Boy Bubby is an amazing, one of a kind film.

Oh, yeah. And I also bought Anna from them. That's great, too. I'd recommend them overall.
