Club Everything

This was Pete's idea, but he's not posting cause it's the weekend.

Is it time for Club ILX? Two floors. Top floor: I Love Music - DJs and dancing. Bottom floor: I Love Everything - a stereo playing mixtapes sent in by contributors, plus whatever else anyone wants to do down there - cookery tasting, stand-up, miniature art shows, readings, debates, boardgames, you name it. And of course a well-furnished bar.

I think this is a great idea. Question is - how?

Tom, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Or vice versa, of course, floor-wise.

Tom, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I could contribute my djing skills, electronica, dub and more

Ed, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We could always just do it in Borders, couldn't we (probably easier to do in the Magdalen Street one rather than the Oxford Circus one)? Mixtapes not a good idea unless all played at once a la "Zaireeka." Could always, of course, turn it incidentally into a "Fuck You Oxford: Marcello Bids Farewell To The Dump" commemoration (as hopefully I'll be out of the damn place by then). Get a local celebrity (e.g. Bill Heine, Tom Paulin, drummer out of the Candyskins) to cut a symbolic thread.

Or maybe the Museum of Modern Art in Pembroke Street. I would advise maybe try to avoid just doing it in a bog-standard club, otherwise everyone will just keep bopping to Bis and the Bodines and ignore all the multimedia paraphernalia - as I've found with similar experiments in the past.

I was kind of thinking of having it in London since Oxford already has a grate club night, or does for one more month before Big Louie decides to send the boys in. (Admittedly Sussed lacks cook-ins and art shows).

You may well be right about the mixtapes.

Tom, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Get a local celebrity (e.g. Bill Heine, Tom Paulin, drummer out of the Candyskins) to cut a symbolic thread.'...

Oh sweet nostalgia! I'm mulligatawnying my life away in Manhattan, And today it's rather grey and nippy here. But as long as you keep namechecking cute Oxoniana everything will be fine.

Sweetie, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If this happens...I may even make an appearence! Maybe, instead of mixtapes, everyone could bring a CD of their choice...I'm bringing "Guns'n'Roses: Live Era"...I could bring some of my paintings...if you like. How about a subbuteo tournament?

james, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This does sound like a VERY GOOD IDEA but I'm not sure how it'd work. I think it would be difficult for the two halves to be on an equal footing, rather than the ILE room being a kind of chill-out room/whatever for the ILM room. If it was in a normal club then the ILM room would dominate. Maybe if the ILE room was more enormous (either in size or somehow higher profile or something). It would need to be somewhere very swish though, preferably with BIG COMFY SEATS

jamesmichaelward, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well...I for one, would nay bop.

james, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Timing is the solution. On a Friday night - nobody will want to go to the ILE room because the kidXoR want to dance. On a Sunday afternoon things will likely be much more equitable.

Tom, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, daytime! Please!...

james, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, daytime would be cool, though if it's in the daytime and there's Subbuteo then you run the risk of it becoming Byker Grove with booze (which would be a FANTASTIC thing)

jamesmichaelward, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ant and DeXoR!!

Tom, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I will send butter

Mike Hanle y, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Do I go in the stocks or am I just an eccentric in the corner?

Robin Carmody, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Brilliant idea. Mixtapes yes.

dave q, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah this sounds GRATE. Wish I could help organize (what am I talking about? wish I could freeload at the last second is what I meant to say)

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Could i send you some of my stuff and could someone read it ?

anthony, Sunday, 14 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you know i'd probaly fly to the uk if tom could do a floor show with that dildo of his.

Geoff, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HOLY FUCKING SHIT this is a fantastic idea. Seriously.

DG, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If it's going to be Sunday afternoon, can you do it somewhere that has a dartboard?

Madchen, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think taking part in an ILE game of Trivial Pursuit would be an enriching and humbling experience. Can we do that too? Who would win?

Sam, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and sells London Pride

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Seconded on both Pride and darts fronts.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I always win trivial pursuit due to late comebacks using the Americentric sports pie wedge. I have beaten the inventer of medical ultrasound and Mr. Currie so am formidable.

But I think Dastoor would win this one!

suzy, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sports pie wedge = easiest of lot, americentric or not

chris, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey! Hey! Is it poss to play online?

Sam, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

not with my firewall :-(

chris, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not that much of a trivia king actually, suzy. I'm nothing without databases, internet and books at my disposal.

Nick, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am Trivial Pursuit god - not so much because I know loads of trvial shit (which I do) but mainly because I make up very obscure questions for other people when the card question is piss easy. Which makes me think of a new thread....

Club ILx - its a pub with people being annoying upstairs....

Pete, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Mark SinX0r would whup all our arses at Trivial Pursuit what with his being omniscient and that.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Trivial Pursuit with everyone making up questions as they go along.... Wowsa! It'd be just like the weekly SOAS pub quiz.

Pete, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i fall at the hurdle of sportXoR, sadly

mark s, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Do it at the Betsey - it's free to hire, and if you have people buying drinks they're generally happy. No pressure to fill the place then, or make money or what have you.

Paul Strange, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm, never seen a dartboard at the Betsey, have you?

Madchen, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Still haven't made it to the Betsey (friends let me down for last fri LIUSA -- saw New ORder instead, top!). but it's the pub opposite the guardian offices right? are there il*ers from the guardian then?

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If the logo for this dealie included a baby seal I for one would be amused.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer = genius.

Sam, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Howzabout an IL* experience world tour so us proles in the provinces/colonies can have a sniff of the metropolitan glamour you tantalise us with.

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 16 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
so...
