Down and Dirty Pictures

Anyone read/have thoughts on Peter Biskind's new book, Down and Dirty Pictures? Easy Riders was an all-time great dish; what's the prospect of a similar book about Affleck and Smith?

Have you read it? I haven't heard of it.

I really enjoyed his book on the fifties, though.

So this thread IS work-safe. I am both relieved and disappointed.

I knew this would be dodgy thread name.

Currently working on it. As mentioned in my failed attempt to revive the Soderbergh thread, it makes a good argument towards the reconsideration of Soderbergh. As for Tarantino, Affleck, etc...it doesn't look to be so nice. And it really is a philippic aimed straight at Harvey Weinstein.

Supposedly it's not been published yet in the UK b/c of fear of a libel lawsuit being more easily prosecuted there.

basically it centers around a single room apartment, the old piano within it, potato mysticism, incan sea goddesses, an abandoned hostess cupcake factory and the occupants of the room throughout a few years.

i get ideas for films from photos i take. i couldnt write a script to save my life

no no, that's good.

written very sloppily, redford stuff tacked on, poorly factchecked, rushed out before the copyeditors were done with it, fun as shit.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The redford stuff IS tacked on, but I like the writing!

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The redford stuff is just plain uninteresting, actually.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i think "written very sloppily" and "rushed out before the copyeditors were done with it" are analogous. i haven't read it since it came out. i kinda wanna go back to it now.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked it a lot--written exactly like his previous book "easy riders, raging bulls." are there factual errors in the book? i liked the redford stuff, he comes across like a real stuffed shirt...

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i remember counting quite a few factual errors when i read it, but i can't remember what any of them are.

I enjoyed this a lot, for personal reasons more than it beign a terrific read, which it pretty much is, though not as good or gossipy as Easy Riders. Plenty of stories of Harvey reducing people to tears.

I thought Affleck, Kevin Smith and Tarantino generally came across as quite likeable. One of my favourite lines is when Tarantino asks Alison Anders (who he was then dating) back to his apartment......to alphabetise his video tapes.

I'd offer to lend to UK peeps, but it will have to wait until I return to London and I expect it will be out there by that time.

what was US independent film? people talk about '84, the year of 'stranger than paradise' -- but what else happened? i guess indie's 'moment' was 'sex, lies and videotape', and after that tarantion, linklater, hartley. but what was indie film in the '80s?

This is next for me, once the girl is done reading it and telling me everything in it every day. Maybe I won't need to read it after all.
