Can anyone recommend me a cheap, reliable, longterm and large capacity (at least 0.5 gb) linux web hosting solution.

For cheap and cheerful, Supanames is(are?) quite good. I'd check the data transfer cap though - if you really need 500MB then presumably you'll also need a lot of bandwidth - their MidHost package (500MB capacity, £40pa) offers 2GB per month and their PremierHost one (1GB, £90pa) offers 4GB.

I'm looking as well. I'd like something at least as good as what I had before, which was 200 MB, 10 GB bandwidth, 4 MySQL Databases, full scripting support, Linux-based, MyPHPAdmin, Cpanel, and the rest. I was paying about $12 a month.

I ended up going back to my old guys at NEIT. Never had a problem with them. (The August thing was a problem with a reseller of their services.)

What's good in 2006?

I need PHP5/MySQL(or Postgres), shell access. Having a dedicated virtualized machine (user mode linux?) would be nice too) My budget is fairly robust

ooh yeah that's nice.

I've pimped for dreamhost before, they're certainly great for my modest needs. If you go for them, use my ID voicelady for a referral, I could really use the $$$. :(

i use dreamhost, but i don't know enough about web hosting to recommend anything

Did you pay for a year upfront?

lol goat on table (admrl), Sunday, 25 September 2011 23:11 (thirteen years ago) link

sorry for such a boring q but: does anyone have a gd hosting recommendation. i was using a sort of metered/top up thing, nearlyfreespeech, i use v lil bandwidth but just wanted something p normal + affordable, honestly it doesn't even need to be ~the most reliable~ or anything. web hosting is something i never figured out the lazy default solution to.

schlump, Saturday, 16 July 2016 18:48 (eight years ago) link

The current lazy default imo for totally static web content (no backend or database or anything) is to use AWS S3 and point a domain at it. You sacrifice a lot of flexibility but in exchange you get about as solid web hosting as it's possible to have I think? The other wrinkle is you can't use regular FTP tools to sync you need something that works with the S3 protocol etc. Anyway that's what I'd do.

Sean, let me be clear (silby), Saturday, 16 July 2016 18:52 (eight years ago) link

ty so much but uuugh i am so used to using ftp thru dreamweaver. ty for this advice tho !, lmk see if i can make it work. lazy-default is exactly what i wanted so this is v helpful.

also, just so i have not bumped a boring thread on otherwise absorbing distraction platform ilx w/o adding redeeming social content, when i think of web hosting more broadly rn i rly feel like i cd never buy a regular domain again. like why wd you buy .com or some regional suffix when you cd have .ZONE ? it is a new world

schlump, Saturday, 16 July 2016 18:55 (eight years ago) link

Top picks imo are
.zone
.club
.camp
.academy

Revive!

I just caught up on all the recent CentOS handwringing and since my server OS has been EOL'ed it's time to shop around. I'm considering switching to Linode, but what other web hosts are people using these days?

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 10 December 2020 23:31 (three years ago) link

Vultr cuz I can run OpenBSD on it

is right unfortunately (silby), Thursday, 10 December 2020 23:42 (three years ago) link

four months pass...

my hosting provider has annoyingly dropped support for Symbiosis, which was a neat little command-line system for managing mailboxes, ftp, etc

and now they have EOLed their old Debian install, so I have to..... migrate everything to Debian 10 myself. no thank you. i am getting them to do it for me.

however, i have a choice:

- Debian + Plesk
- CentOS + CPanel

any opinions on this, o ilx hivemind?

anybody?

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 15:26 (three years ago) link

Since CentOS itself has been EOLed in some respect, go Debian. (I just made the switch myself to a new hosting provider w/Debian 10)

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 20 April 2021 19:43 (three years ago) link

That is very good to know. Thanks Elvis.
