Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 24 January 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i say it's a three-way heat b/w alex in nyc, jess, and myself. kinda like the dean/kerry/edwards of piss-off.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 24 January 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"turn into"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 24 January 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Jess beat me to it. (And hey, don't I qualify?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 January 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I don't *expect* that it will be me.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 24 January 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i think alex needs to be disqualified since he's more like the vaudeville version of "grumpy"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 24 January 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"you festering squidmullets" etc etc.

JUST SAY "FUCK OFF" YOU FRUIT

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 24 January 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i've known plenty of GOMs who were as, um, "colorful" in their language as alex.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 24 January 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

and ned's too fulla pooh-cheer to ever be a GOM.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 24 January 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I fully expect to, although I have a few years left in me.

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

my fate:

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

but who will be the selma to my patty?

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

ROCKET BRA!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

(my theory: Ally)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

so when do you get a job at motor vehicles?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

GET OFF MY THREAD YOU KIDS!!!

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the question just got answered! In a roundabout way.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

(that's what they call it in NJ. i think they call it something else in NYC.)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

so when do you get a job at motor vehicles?

hey, you're in the wrong line, buddy. see the one with all the people? you go there.

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

selma & patty = jbr & allyzay? BUT THEY ARE THE 2 TaTU CHIXORS!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Some strange conclusions are being advanced here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, i thought i was the utz girl!

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

THAT, TOO! SHE'S THE AMISH DISCO-DYKE.

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

on 2d thought, ned'll be the eighty-year old guy in the nursing home who's hearing is shot to shit and blasts loveless at top volume, saying I CAN'T HEAR IT SONNY TURN IT UP!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Entirely possible.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i think alex needs to be disqualified since he's more like the vaudeville version of "grumpy"

Fuck is that supposed to mean?

I don't think I'm categorically "grumpy". I'm certainly easily disgusted but the flagrant, whistle-headed idiocy of my fellow man, but that doesn't mean I walk around kicking puppies and popping childrens' balloons and so forth. I'd say I'm probably more anal/neurotic/overly-opinionated/vocationally frustrated than simply "grumpy".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"popping childrens' balloons" = AWESOME!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, that does sound like a lot of fun actually

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 24 January 2004 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know if this helps you guys out or not with your game here, but I will state that this thread is ALMOST as cool as the one Darnielle started about Momus vs. Geir Hongro.

TOMBOT, Saturday, 24 January 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, that thread was almost Chekhovian in its humanity.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 24 January 2004 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Take the grumpy old man out of Darnielle and you'd be left with Devendra Banhart.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 24 January 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

... which ILXor is most likely to turn into a dirty old man?

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 24 January 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan?

Prude (Prude), Saturday, 24 January 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"turn into"
-- strongo hulkington (dubplatestyl...), January 24th, 2004 7:49 PM. (later)

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 24 January 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Take the grumpy old man out of Darnielle and you'd be left with Devendra Banhart.

Interesting theory....

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 24 January 2004 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure whether to thank you all for not mentioning me or bitchslap the lot of you.

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 24 January 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

personally im shooting for walter matthau with a dash of don knots for seasoning.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 24 January 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I have the biggest lead re being a dirty old man, but I don't think I'm terribly grumpy. Counting down from the oldest here, the first person I come to who is distinctly inclined to grumpiness might be my old and dear friend Andrew L. The best young bet might be Julio. It must be free jazz that does it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 24 January 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I think people who are grumpy when they're young (relatively) are more likely to turn out as the hippie grand dad sorta fellow, you know wearing bright shirts, beach combing, doing yoga, researching the family tree etc. Heh :)

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 24 January 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my God I'm going to turn into Jerry Garcia.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 24 January 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, Jel beat me to the post I wanted to make. I am not going to be a grumpy old woman. I get less bitter as I get older. At the age of 40, I'm going to convert to being a Quaker and become a hippie grandmother full of love, love, love. Who wants a peace cookie?

the river fleet, Saturday, 24 January 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

so you're gonna start liking jerry garcia solos?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 24 January 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

There, look what you've done, you'll make her bitter again. BAD JULIO, NO BISCUIT.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 January 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I'll wind up a grumpy old man, but I'm not ruling out "crazy hermit".

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 24 January 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd quite like to end up smoking a pipe, playing bowls, and drinking Bass. Grumpiness is neither here nor there.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 January 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex isn't really that grumpy at all. Lots of joy de vivre (or however you spell that) in his posts. Same with Eisbar.

Jess is grumpy, but in a real "Boy With The Thorn In His Side" kind of way. Good fortune could alter this greatly, especially judging by posts from 2001.

Matos tries too hard to be mean, grumpy, whatever, to actually be it. Sometimes the anecdotes are so close to anecdotes about Robert Christgau that I want to ask if he edits in the nude too.

Nate could well become a grumpy old man, but I hope he won't.

More likely I see most people here becoming frumpy lushes, but the kind that sing a lot.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 January 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to ask if he edits in the nude too

Um...this begs certain questions.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 January 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I reckon I'll be a grumpy old man to be honest.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 24 January 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

keep up a steady dosage of freedom rock to fight that, Jel! That's my plan.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 January 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck this Jack Lemmon shit. People should be gunning for the Burgess Meredith vibe. God knows we're all bawdy enough.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 January 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and Ned I'm not sure what you mean by your post. If it's what I think it is, yeah, Xgau allegedly spent a lot of time in front of his writers bare-ass naked. Lester Bangs told one anecdote about how Xgau ran to put some clothes on when his openly gay neighbor came to the door. Bangs was pissed that Xgau didn't want to arouse the guy but still made Bangs endure Xgau's "flabby ass."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 January 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

... which ILXor is most likely to turn into a dirty old man?

That's me in a nutshell. Not sure whether to laugh or cry...

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Saturday, 24 January 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

CEASELESS HORROR

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 24 January 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

(xp re Xgau hinder)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 24 January 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

no way Jeanne! You've got the freedom rock too!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 January 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to be like Ann Miller (who apparently just died yesterday!) in Mulholland Drive -- a fiesty, sarcastic, outrageous old lady. I also feel some kind of exotic pet companion is necessary as well.

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 24 January 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

(I don't get it.) xpost

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Saturday, 24 January 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

you like the kind of bands that should keep you from getting too grumpy. As does Jel. It's these fuckin' trainspotters that are gonna get upset when they start getting left behind.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 January 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I also feel some kind of exotic pet companion is necessary as well.

But but but people from Southern California are exotic! Or maybe that's just me, a species of one.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 January 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Bah! All you whippersnappers! GET OFF MY LAWN! (*waves cane at forum*)

Lord Custos Oatmeal (Lord Custos Omicron), Sunday, 25 January 2004 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony, we've never met, and you really don't know me at all. So just don't, OK?

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 25 January 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, if you can't figure out the post above was a joke, not to mention that I actually consider myself a very nice guy (and am not "trying" to be "mean" or "grumpy" ever), I don't know what the hell to say.

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 25 January 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony, dearie, you didn't read my italics post carefully. I said I was a DIRTY old man, not a grumpy one. (Why on earth did I bother to clarify that? Sheesh.)

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Sunday, 25 January 2004 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck this Jack Lemmon shit. People should be gunning for the Burgess Meredith vibe

The hell with this Jack Lemmon shit, i'm gunning for the ultra-creepy Donald Pleasance-as-Van Helsing vampire killer.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 25 January 2004 05:06 (twenty-one years ago)

sucka (sucka), Sunday, 25 January 2004 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even have to read this whole thread to know I'm sounding like a scratched record but Jess has this one sewn up. ;)

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Sunday, 25 January 2004 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

SOMEONE DONE SCRATCHED MA RECORDS AND SEWN UP MA RECTUM! YOU DAMN KIDS, ALWAYS PLAYIN' TRICKS ON A FEEBLE OLD MAN, CAIN'T YA HAVE SOME RESPECT FER THE ELDERLY?

sucka (sucka), Sunday, 25 January 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

woops, sorry about the "dirty"/"grumpy" mix-up, Jeanne!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

as implied by my "burgess meredith vibe" statement, I'm ALL for dirty.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

What about dirrty?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, "Dirrty" is better than "Beautiful" easy.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)
