Has anyone here been to 'Stay Beautiful' in London...

...and if so what's it like? I know there's a website but it's hardly going to give an unbiased account, eh?

DG, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

That's the Simon Price thing, right?

Michael, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yes indeed.

DG, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well if Simon Price is involved its got to be some sort of New Romantic/Goth night with lots of Manics tunes.

Michael, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

It's a shrine to Richey Edwards, full of rambling ranting essays about how much Simon loved him.

I really don't know, but if it was that, I'd probably go hunt down the man and murder him myself, dumbass. GET OVER IT. HE WASN'T INTO MEN, OR IF HE WAS, NOT YOU. Fucking Simon Price.

Ally, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

no, but i've been to candy box.

oh the shame...

gareth, Sunday, 10 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm scared of it. For some reason, flyerers always give Paul flyers for it, but they never give them to *me*. Humph.

masonic boom, Sunday, 10 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Scared? Why's that?

DG, Sunday, 10 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

That's 'cos Paul looks like a manics fan in dim light. Oh yes.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Sunday, 10 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I always knew Paul was that type. I just had the vibe.

Ally, Sunday, 10 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Come on, I mean, you *knew* there had to be a reason I date Paul... I get the *looks* of a Manics fan without ever having to actually put up with the music! Mwah hah hah!

masonic boom, Monday, 11 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

See, DG, I told you Manics fans are rumored to be hot. And you didn't believe me.

Ally, Monday, 11 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The boys? Oh yeah! They wear scads of eyeliner, dye their hair and starve themselves skinny so their cheekbones stick out, cause they wanna look like Richey... Uuuuhhhh... however, sorry, female Manics fans tend to fall into two categories... there are the cute, glittery ones who also fancy Rachel Stamp, but there are freaking SCARY ones who look like apprentice goffs. Weex!

But I've never met a male manics fan who's not absolutely lovely. (Probably cause I've never met Simon Price!!!) Shame about their musical tastes, though. ;-)

It's terrible, because dronerock boys, by and large, are just not lovely. Unless they actually come from Rugby, they tend to be scary and have beards. ;-)

masonic boom, Monday, 11 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Dronerockers have nothing on the Richey aesthetic. I reckon more boys should try to look like Richey. Screw this athletic thing or this indie rock thing, they should just aspire to one thing, and that's Richey. The other Manics would do themselves good if they did, for example, cos they'd lose all that pie blub.

Ally, Monday, 11 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

And Nicky Wire loses that "Planet Of The Apes" hairstyle and sideburns combo! Now that is *not* the way to get me to let you paint my toenails, no, no, no.

Besides, some dronerock boys are beautiful. Just very few of them. Sonic Boom. Robert out of Loop/Main. The collective members of Sigur Ros. It's just too bad the rest of them look like Mogwai.

Now *that* would be my favourite band of all time. Imagine a gang of boys who *look* like the Manics, but *sound* like Spiritualized. I'd be in heaven. Oh, wait, no, sorry, that's the Dandy Warhols. Hooray! My dreams come true.

masonic boom, Monday, 11 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh good lord. The Dandys, as much as I like them, just DREAM of looking like the Manics. At least the two good looking Manics.

Speaking of this combination coming up randomly, have you heard of The (International) Noise Conspiracy, Kate? I keep seeing their video on MTV, and they're truly no good, but they amuse me greatly, because they're like the bastard child of the Dandys and the Manics. They've even got the girl playing keyboard one handed. Their music is a bit punky like early Manics (except crap) and they've got that organ sound like the Dandys (except crap), and behind them in the video - SPRAY PAINTED ANTI-CAPITALISM SLOGANS!

I feel like hugging them and saying, listen, we did this all ten years ago nearly, it's time to move on. Richey is dead, come now, have some tea.

Ally, Monday, 11 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Someone should make like Louis J. Pearlman and construct such a band, cos the Dandys don't do it for me. It should be all boys, for one.

What you would need is some rilly rilly cute boys who did a dronerock lite Ladies and Gentlemen style music; I'd reckon they'd crush Starsailor, the Strokes, etc. And perhaps even get some Smash Hits action.

Nicole, Monday, 11 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The problem is, Pearlman's idea of "cute" is so against all that is actually attractive in the world that it just wouldn't work.

Except in Smash Hits, of course. They like ugly boys like Justin Timberlake in that one. BTW - Justin Timberlake, what is Britney thinking????

Ally, Monday, 11 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

That's why I said like Louis J. Pearlman but not Pearlman himself -- his taste in boys is really awful, but girls seem to like his picks for some strange reason.

Justin is the absolute nadir of Pearlman's taste. He looks like frickin' Dustin Diamond -- that's supposed to be cute? Even now that he shaved his head he still looks like a tool.

Nicole, Monday, 11 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Someone else who thinks he looks like Screech - yesss! I thought me and my mom were alone on this one. He's horrid, I would not only kick him out of bed, but I'd throw him out the window, and if he didn't self destruct upon landing somehow, I'd hurl things on him to make sure he self destructed.

I reckon I should be doing this Pearlman thing, I have way better taste than he does. I mean, hello, Richey, Christian Bale, Johnny Depp, Hugh Jackman and Alex James are all way better looking than Justin Timberlake.

Ally, Monday, 11 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well, at least Alex at his best. He looks a little bit manky nowadays.

That's scarily close to my "10 I wouldn't kick out of bed" list, so you should take Louis' job.

Nicole, Monday, 11 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well, yeah, I just did my ten list and they all came with little caveats in some way, ie Jarvis if he'd take a bath and lose those glasses, Damon and Alex at the same time if they were mute, Richey if he were alive, etc.

I think the problem is that I'm not good at catering to people like my teenage sister, who thinks NSync are cute. Unlike my two other teenage sisters, who find NSync repulsive and just listen to David Bowie and Rammstein and smoke pot in their room all day, whatever that's about.

Ally, Monday, 11 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

But I've never met a male manics fan who's not absolutely lovely. (Probably cause I've never met Simon Price!!!) Shame about their musical tastes, though. ;-)

Wow, you really haven't met Simon. He is generally understood to be One Of The Sweetest People Around. And he really is.

As for the club itself, it's pretty cool. They can be a little heavy with the Manics stuff a bit...but not many clubs play Virginia Plain and follow it with Jumpin' Jumpin'. Plus the TV screens play Bowie: The Video Collection, so there's something nice to look at.

If you don't like MSP or Suede or Bowie or Adam Ant or Joan Jett or Kenickie or Blondie then you probably wouldn't like it. If you do like MSP or Suede or Bowie or Adam Ant or Joan Jett or Kenickie or Blondie then you might like it.

Personally, I prefered the old venue but maybe the new one will grow on me. And hey, it's the place where all the celebs hang out...Graham Coxen's been a few times, various members of King Adora and Rachel Stamp sometimes show their faces. Senay Baxendale is almost always there. Sophie Ellis Baxter once tried to get in free (because she's such a big star and all) but was told she had to pay like everyone else and so stormed off.

jamesmichaelward, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

You've never heard one of Paul Bonham's sets at Strange Fruit, then...?

masonic boom, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Which also have the added bonus of being 100% MSP free.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well, I did say "not many"...

He's a lovely chap. A really lovely chap. And funny too! Pretty remarkable for a Welshman.

stay beautiful is a bit ... 'non-'. trouble with indie clubs in the U of K - they're all deluded into the idea that glamour means playing records with guitars on which were originally played by people who looked (a bit) glamorous. No-one should be pogo-ing in the 21st century niteclub. This isn't 1991. Going out shouldn't resemble the crowd movements at a Levellers gig. Slinky moves to upscale grooves thats what the kids need...

Dr Calculus, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The grimiest levelleriest indie record is still preferable in a club setting to Zero 7.
