Getting the Dole - Australia

Are there any Australians on ILE who have recent experience with Centrelink? Coz I need advice.

I registered with them a couple of weeks ago but they won't pay me for 13 weeks due to me having Telstra shares and then I forgot to go to a job seminar and I forgot to apply for 10 jobs per fortnight (I applied for none) and I was just reading their rules and if I've committed two Activity Test offenses (which I believe I have) they can/will reduce my payment by 24% for 26 weeks.

Will they measure the 26 weeks from when they actually start paying me or from now?

I mean, I doubt if I'll need their money anyway but I thought I should register just to cover my ass in case I cannot be bothered working over January, I mean, I earn too much freelance to get the dole anyway but I doubt if there will be sufficient freelance work over summer.

Anyway, how strict are they? Are they going to burn me over this?

ok - i imagine the ten jobs thing is part of yr dole diary - first thing you need to do is fill it out, even if it's just with freelance enquiries you made, they all count, fudge the dates, but get onto that as you need to keep it up to date. 2ndly re the apptment, call them tomorrow morning and explain yr sitauation, that you were unsure when you were going to be registered from etc and ask them to reschedule the interview...also good is saying you didn't get the letter which said where the interview was, but you knew you had an interview so yr trying to find out. 3rdly, check re the shares thing - I don't know how much they are worth, so if they are substantial, yr kinda screwed, buuuut...you can apply for emergency consideration on grounds of financial hardship, ie if you can prove yr not getting an income from them etc - it's probelemtaic this assets ownership thing, but just look into that a littl emore carefully. the important thing is to get yr dole diary into gear and also look at where you stand re seminar...apologies profusely, ladel excuse after apolgy and express eagerness to make up/clarify past mistakes.

remember above all it's a game - they think they have power over you, you have to act as if they do, but you can subvert it in many wyas re jobs you look for, how much harrassing you get given by them etc...

good luck.

Thanks for the advice Geoff, I was thinking that filling out the dole diary with slightly fudged dates might be the trick. I've already had my interview. It was a job seminar that they decided I had to do that I forgot about and it was a week ago - I'm kind of late telling them that I couldn't make it! Maybe I could turn up tomorrow morning pretending to have got which Tuesday it was mixed up!

The worst thing is that I have to find 10 jobs a fortnight to apply for but I have to make sure that I don't get any of them. That's going to be hard.

again no probs with the job hunting thing - apply for every single position in the executive directors sections of the australian or the age - noone will even give you an interview, and you can get on with doing the other stuff...job seminaris something everyone has to go to, very useless (of course), but yeah, turn up, say you got the dates wrong, anything that convinces them they have the power.

I suppose I should really sabotage my CV before I send it out. I always accidentally get jobs when I don't want them. It sux.
