strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Hello Jess.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I quite like it. It's started snowing here in Edinburgh and it looks all pretty and floaty.

hmmm, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I defy ANYONE on ILX (except maybe Bryan) to be colder than me. -46 C.

Huck Everlasting (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

It's nice here today: -27 C with no wind chill. I do agree that winter must go but not before I get in some skating on the rivers and a good couple of days of cross country skiing.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

five to ten inches of snow tonight/tomorrow in nyc. waaaaaaaah.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

MINUS FORUTY SIX CELSIUS WHAT THE FUCK?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Atmosphere shmatmosphere, more burning of the coal! It's been colder!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

It's even worse for him right now! This is saying -49 C with the wind chill in Regina! That's fucked up.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Still snowing in edinburgh, very light though.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

MINUS FORUTY SIX CELSIUS WHAT THE FUCK?

you:preacher::me:choir

Huck Everlasting (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

-46 C?! h-h-hotDAMN!

The coldest I've gotten through in my minuscule home country were a few weeks of -35-36 C, and that was in the late 80s... Hasn't been lower than -17 this winter, tho.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i cannot imagine. i think the coldest i've ever been in Blighty is a mere -15 and that's with a severe wind chill factor

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The Environment Canada site says -49 C with the wind chill in Regina as of now. That's just fucked.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Where the fyucking hellfire are you Huck? Elephant Island?

@lex K (Alex K), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Pshaw. Last year the cold snap of minus 40 and below started just after New Years and lasted well into Feb. This year it's only just begun in the last week.
Still, how do you motivate yrself to get out of bed on days like this?

Huck Everlasting (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

SNOW DAY in ann arbor!

except that i'm at work. phooey.

Huggy Dork (Kingfish), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

http://cbc.ca/weather/radar/radarmaps/prairies_grey_loop.gif

Huck Everlasting (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

It was about the same temp here as in Regina without the wind chill when I went out this morning. I always just kinda laugh to myself as I walk to my car and pray that some fuckface hasn't come along and unplugged it (it starts anyway but reluctantly). If I was walking or even taking the bus I just don't think I could do it.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

good thing about the bus is that (as long as you don't have to wait a long time) it's already warm when you get on.

Huck Everlasting (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i knew a bunch of canadian sleazebags would corrupt this thread

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, until we get some Siberians to put us in our place it's just the way it's gonna go.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

MAN, ITS COLD AS A MOTHERSKI

yuro gargarington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

We been told.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Is cold like heart of Stalin.

Hucklestov Brrrrrski (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

So you're saying it's cold.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Corny older guy came into work today and said he was sick of people saying "cold enough for you."
Then I said "complaining about people saying 'cold enough for you' is the new 'cold enough for you'" and that shut his smug trap shut.

Huck Everlasting (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

this sux

g--ff (gcannon), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice to see my comrades from the Great White north holding fort here. Respect. I get such a kick out of the whining here in the UK about how it's getting cold. "OOOH, it might be minus 10 C with the wind chill!". Rookies. I think the weather is lovely today here in London, and if it gets colder, fine by me. Hell, I'd even like a bit of snow - mostly because I want to see if the transit system grinds to a halt...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

although last night my bus driver almost whipped a shitty around a corner in the snow, that was pretty cool.

g--ff (gcannon), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

-49 C?!?!?! I didn't know it got that cold on earth!

Felcher (Felcher), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Just to give you guys an idea...
I just ran across the street to the bank and as I crossed the parking lot, car alarms were going off. Not because the cold has inspired the city's criminal element to new heights of daytime daring, but because it's so cold the plexiglass or whatever is contracting and screwing with the electronics.
And the wind is actually fairly light for Saskatchewan, but it doesn't take much when it's this ACTUAL cold to subtract 20 degrees.

Huck Everlasting (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

it's the new Ice Age! Emmerich was right!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

it's now -52 C after windchill.

Huck Everlasting (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

SON OF A
The stupid thing is that we made plans to go to Edmonton in February to visit my mom, so that I could introduce my partner to the bone-chilling cold of a February winter on the prairies, because that's something that she's not experienced before. But it came a week early; we're going to be there when it's much warmer out...but it's okay, because it's been so goddamned cold even here in Toronto that we had no burning desire to experience any more of that than necessary. Plus we're getting snow like a sumbitch here too. Every time I shovel it it just blows and snows back in. Whoever thought this up is gonna be voted out of office, I swear.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yesterday, when it was a mere -35 C I was thinking, really, once it hits 30 below, what's the difference, it's just really freaking cold. But this is truly the work of an angry and powerful spirit.

Huck Everlasting (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps we could indulge in a few colourful phrases used to describe the cold in our parts, y'know, like "Colder than a witch's tit" or the classic "Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey". Or maybe we could make up some new ones?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

now -53!

Huck Everlasting (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread has been pre-empted to bring you HUCK DEATH WATCH. We will inform you the precise second when he freezes solid.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

the key is to stay out of the wind. by hiding behind a hill or mountain or tree or OH SHIT!!! THERE ARE NONE!

Huck Everlasting (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I should have moved to Hawaii.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

What is -53C in F? -53?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

That's -63 in F. Holy shit.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It's -6 °C in NYC today. For comparison.

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

(that's 21 °F)

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I lord over all of you as King of Cold!

Holy Crap It's Cold (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

21 °F is still really cold!!

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Winter rules. I was let off work 3 hours early.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, Jody, I do feel for you. We're generally used to extreme fucking cold, and know how to deal with it. We like to make fun of cities who freak out over rare snowfalls or drops below freezing, but that's just cuz we hate ourselves for living in what G.B. Shaw once called "the land God gave Cain."

Huck Everlasting (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Meanwhile, in Los Angeles: 56 °F. Break out the fur coats!

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

remember global warming?

oh that's right, the experts say that it can get warmer *or* colder. a back each way, in other words.

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

so another older coworker comes in and he says "colder than a witch's tit out there!" and I say, "Dude, I don't wanna hear about what you do after hours."
We laughed.

Huck Everlasting (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Meanwhile, in Los Angeles: 56 °F. Break out the fur coats!

The agonies!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

It will be a balmy -39ºC tonight...

My car didn't start this morning even though I plugged it in overnight.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

It's really cool outside right now. Still cold as all hell, -49 C or thereabouts, though the wind is lower, so the actual cold is pretty awful, but there's this great thick ice fog and you can only see about a block, so everything is very ghostly!
Friendly ghostly, though.

Huck Everlasting (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

These fucking weatherpeople piss me off. All their supposed talk of Massachusetts getting a huge snow storm. Turned out to be complete bullshit. We got a dusting. Damn you weatherman for ruining my supposed snow day off!

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Huck. We now have what you had yesterday. Currently -51 C (-60 F) with the wind chill here. My fingers are sore and I drove to work with gloves on. I broke the antenna off of my car last night with my snow brush and I barely touched the fucking thing. FUCK!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Huck.

Whatever. I didn't MAKE the weather! Though I'm flattered you think I'm that powerful. (I actually did draw up blueprints for a weather machine when I was in high school--oh, and stoned)

Huck Everlasting (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand that "colder than a witch's tit" thing. I touched a wiccan girl's boob once and it was just as warm as anyone else's.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

and probably, when the expression came about, people were in the habit of setting witches on fire, so witch's tits should be HOT!

i think it might have something to do though with the idea that sorceresses lactate lemonade.

Huck Everlasting (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's just fun to say. Some people add "in a brass brassiere" to the end of that saying but I think that's superfluous.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

http://cbc.ca/weather/radar/radarmaps/prairies_grey_loop.gif

Huck If I Know (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

It's currently a nippy 43F here-- my fingers almost froze walking to my car after work Of course we're spoiled rotten, everyone seems to whine like crazy when it goes below 40F in the winter.

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 31 January 2004 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, and to think that before I opened it I thought I'd own this thread. It's "only" about -30C here; probably about the coldest area in the contiguous United States, I guess.
It is cold enough for car alarms to start acting weird, though. A van in our lot was repetitively doing that "flash your lights and let out a short beep" thing that happens when you use a keychain remote locking/unlocking apparatus (argh that was so not comprehensible, must be the cold).
And the only way we can keep the apartment at a tolerable temp is to have the oven on all the time, so it's a good thing it's electric and we don't have electric bills!

Dan I. (Dan I.), Saturday, 31 January 2004 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, it got warmer I guess, it's -24C now.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Saturday, 31 January 2004 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Somebody explain to my dog that I would love to take him for a long walk on the beach BUT I DON'T WANT TO DIE.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

It's not Minneapolis, but it's still cold. When I brushed my damp hair out while (briefly) walking the dog this morning, snow formed on the brush.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

If I put enough layers on to keep my trunk warm, I won't be able to bend my arms to get my hands into my pockets, resulting in Into Thin Air-style Blackened Hands. And as a double hand-amputee, I will not be able to post here any more.
So I AM LEAVING ILX.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

move!

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

My boss said she was surprised that no one ditched work today. She said she would have done so if she hadn't taken a day off last week.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

It is 70 degrees here. I think I should've ditched work.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

It's 20 degree F. here. I know, that's nothing. I'm a whiner. But the wind chill! Argh.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

that's really effing cold! I don't think it's been that low in the daytime here. I definitely wouldn't go out.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

20? That's not cold!

Here it's 5 F right now. Last night when I was driving home, my car said the temp outside was -8. The closest parking spot I could find was a block away, and so I ran to my apartment, but honestly, I think that made it worse, because the wind in my face just about froze my cheeks.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

I think the temperature is almost up to zero in the Twin Cities area.

My fingers will NOT GET WARM.

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

beth, my cat clearly blames me for this weather. she "goes" outside, she's out there long enough to "go".

ai lien (kold_krush), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

where the hell are you jaymc?

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

Chicago

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

The yearly novelty of having my snot freeze has worn off and I am done with this winter

A B C (sparklecock), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

I was not aware that there was a town called Embarrass, Minnesota. I'm assuming Ventura lives there.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

ah, I would love chi-town if not for the ridiculous cold.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

I know 20's not cold. Like I said, thewind chill at the beach, where I always walk the dog. And he's going to harass me until I do his bidding. I'm taking him.
My top layer:
polypropylene long john top
thin silk sweater
thin cashmere sweater
thick wool sweater
berber fleece pullover
denim jacket

bottom layer:
silk long johns
lined khakis

wool sox.

furry fleece hat.
wool scarf.

Everything will be fine except my hands, even in the fucking gel-filled 40 dollar gloves. I always take them off when I pick up pepples. Too clumsy.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

Marthas Vineyard, MA* 16...22 F

aimurchie (aimurchie), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

when i rolled past the oak park ave stop on the blue line this morning it was -10 at 7:45. one stop later at harlem it the termometer at the ferara pan factory said -12.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

In Chicago nose boogers freeze within 60 seconds of being outside. I know this from walking my dogs this morning. I have to give them credit -- they were outside doing business in -9 degree weather totally naked.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

P.S. I should totally apologize for the cold. It's completely my fault. I left the house yesterday wearing light pants and Vans, not having checked the weather forecast, and then I was cracking jokes about how I didn't understand why people were interested in meteorology, since apart from farming and disaster planning you can't do anything about it, and it's a whole lame science devoted to telling people with guessing accuracy whether they can plan on having outdoor weddings or not -- and then of course I didn't get home to change before work, and now I'm freezing my whole lower body off in summer slacks and canvas shoes. So, like, sorry everyone, for bringing this on with my hubris.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

I must have brought on TX's current spring weather by knitting my new double-stranded mittens in anticipation of the artic freeze which never came. dumb mittens.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 5 February 2007 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

I love you, Beth, but I can't summon any pity for your ruined walk on the beach.
The little artists (subbing for the art teacher, again) had a much harder day when the bell rang and it was too cold to be on the playground!

aimurchie (aimurchie), Monday, 5 February 2007 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

Still unseasonably and eierily warm in Blighty.
