When you need to sneeze, why does looking at a bright light help to make you sneeze?

when do you NEED to sneeze?

Huck Everlasting (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

"Oh man, I haven't sneezed in weeks; I'M FREAKIN' OUT!!!!"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

You remember that episode of the Simpsons where Santa's Little Helper is on the operating table and God calls to him, "Come to the light, boy, come to the light! Good dog"? Well, it's kind of like the same thing. Sneezes are bad thoughts that are about to die, and when you look at the light it helps them find their way home.

U R GAY

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

just kidding

My wife insists that sunlight on her nose makes her sneeze. i believe that she is either insane or has optical nerves in her nostrils.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

It works very well for me. Seems to have something to do with my eyes, though, not my nose. I wonder if it's related to the way I can tickle the inside of my arm (my elbow pit?) and it makes the back of my tongue itchy?

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

When in doubt, consult The Straight Dope. And apparently they don't know.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

it's so your eyes close.
guess what happens when you sneeze with your eyes open¡

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

your eyes close...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

...or else your eyeballs would shoot across the room!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

can I sit in the dark to STOP me sneezing? Please God.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

No

God (robster), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It's because you're allergic to photons.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Sneezing is the way to immortal life!

Behold:
Mammals have a heartbeat clock, that is, they have a set number of heartbeats that constitutes a lifetime. But sneezing causes the heart to skip a beat! Instant immortality!

Leee Majors (Leee), Thursday, 29 January 2004 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

so if you you sneeze forever, you live forever¿

i would rather die, thank you.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 29 January 2004 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

But think of the robots you could meet if you lived that long¡ You're so backwards thinking I'm regretting that I revealed my secret¡

Leee Majors (Leee), Thursday, 29 January 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

fuzzy logic: it's a cross-over of nerve reactions that your brain sends/receives from your nose and eyes.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

it's because when you raise your head the air flows through your nostrils more easily.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

so many people have this condition, i am real suprised about all the 'is it for real' ness of this thread. I get this, so do a billion other people i know, etc etc. its called photic sneezing

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

and its genetic, both me and my sister 'suffer' from it. In fatc, I photic(ally?) sneezed about 5 mintues ago...

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel the behaviour is genetic and confers an unrecognised evolutionary advantage... ...as the ozone hole thins and more ultraviolet light penetrates the Earth's atmosphere it will become increasingly dangerous to allow direct sunlight into the eye. The lucky few of use with the sun-sneeze gene will not be exposed to this danger, as our eyes will automatically close as we sneeze! The rest of the population will gradually go blind, something not usually favoured by natural selection

constant sneezing an "unrecognized evolutionary advantage"¿ while the majority of people are going to become blind mole people¿ the future looks bleak indeed.
