Is there any coffee finer than NYC 70-cent diner coffee?

Please share any fond memories.

You can tell any diner you want it light and sweet and it's perfect.

Does 'finer' = 'more caustic'?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Dunkin Donuts?

I have good memories of NYC diner mozzarella sticks. You can't get a good cheese stick in L.A. I tells ya!

word!

strong, bottomless diner coffee is a fine, fine thing though.

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

No doubt. But i live in the ass-end of maryland where diners are far and few in between. IHOP and Denny's just dont cut the mustard. I find myself avoiding diners lately anyway since i quit smoking. Diners and their coffee promoted my habit, regretfully.

5 months and going.

El Spinktor (El Spinktor), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

ive been drinking dunkin donuts coffee since i was in the 5th grade.
imo, the finest coffee comes from south/central america.
if a diner has bad coffee i contemplate suicide. i used to make a good cup of french pressed coffee but have lost the touch i am afraid

kephm, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Im on that Gevalia program. Not bad, i must say. Little pricey though.

I got the hook-up on free Kona from a friend...it spoiled me. I have to ration that shit out now.

El Spinktor (El Spinktor), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Incorrect. If it's straight-up greasy mozzarella sticks you want, go directly to Barney's Beanery on Santa Monica Blvd. Yes, it's sort of a hipster place and the food is up and down, but the mozz sticks there are terrific.

If you want the best fried cheese, go directly to Belmont Brewery in Long Beach - and don't get me started on saganaki which is really a topic unto itself.

Oh my god ::drools:: diner coffee, how good is it? The only thing better is coffee that comes from those little carts on wheels full of coffee and donuts that used to sprout on NYC street corners in the AM, but people tell me that Juliani did away with them, oh please tell me he didn't manage to do away with all of them because I am actually salivating right now.

Of course, the very BEST NYC diner coffee has to come in those blue pseudo-greek cups with the yellow writing on them that says "It is our pleasure to serve you" between pictures of Greek gods, but maybe that's only a Queens thing.

They're still there! Most of 'em.

::drools::

I used to love getting the large coffee and a muffin, it would all come to $1.50 and they would put the muffin on top of the coffee in the bag so by the time I got to work, the muffin would be warm.

I have *got* to find one of these things on Monday morning.

The River Kate (kate), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

No no, I lived on this stuff when I was at film school-from the bagelry beneath the NYFA on Union Square. It is urgent and key!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaaahhh, my hotel is near Union Square, I have to go there and try to get an extra cup to take home and show to Joe so he believes me that they exist.

The River Kate (kate), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

When Chris was in New York over Xmas we stopped in a bagel store where they had a choice of take-out coffee cups including the classic Greek-diner model. I picked one out for his coffee, but I don't know if he noticed it...

Sorry, I'm an ex-coffee snob...(more to the point, ex-coffee drinker who still is a snob about coffee). This thread offends my sensibilities...

El Spinktor (El Spinktor), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, you're late for the poetry slam.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, well, laa-dee-dah, you Seattelite snob you, then. People in NYC drink so much coffee JUST TO KEEP THEIR FINGERS WARM more than for the taste or the caffeine or anything.

The River Kate (kate), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

more on greek coffee cups

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Poetry slams are funny.

El Spinktor (El Spinktor), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

If it wasn't for the coffee carts that served egg, cheese, bacon on a roll in the morning, I just don't think I could exist.

LiquidTide (LiquidTide), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I like coffee, both snobby and cheap diner varieties. The best LA diner coffee is at the Philippes (where it's still only 9 cents!) and at the Apple Pan.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

This was the one at our local diner in Queens!

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to say "wow, what a great site!" because of the level of detail about the coffee cups, but then two clicks, and I had not just encountered a crap scary ex-boyfriend's band, but also a jerk-off band that we used to share a rehearsal space with. ARRRGGGHHH!!! NYC is too small.

The River Kate (kate), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Any diner coffee you have with disco fries is the best

http://www.quartzcity.net/albums/album06/IMG_1015.sized.jpg

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I am starting to jitter in anticipation and jiggle in my seat singing "New York City Coffs, New York City Coffs, they aren't too HAAAAAAWTTT now!!!" but it doesn't quite scan right, does it?

Arrrr, Chris, that, my friend, is POUTIN and that is GODLIKE. I had it just last week in the Blue Benn Diner.

The River Kate (kate), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Poutine has curdled cheese -- the cheese on disco fries is just melted. It is godlike though!

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, gravy fries with cheese. I've never had it with curdled cheese, but it was called Poutin regardless. Must be one of those "Upstate is really Canadia" things.

The River Kate (kate), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread has actually inspired me to make coffee. Not quite the same, but still. Maybe I can write "We Are Happy To Serve You..." on the side of the cup in Mr. Sketch marker or something.

The River Kate (kate), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

gabbneb, Thursday, 6 December 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

We hit the Starlite Diner, an old boxcar off the side of MacArthur Road, every other Saturday for biscuits, grits, chili omlets with salsa, and plenty of refills on the Coke and coffee.

It's one of those places where you get a milkshake, and they also give you the metal cup it was spun around in.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 6 December 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

just like denny's!

Jordan, Thursday, 6 December 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

There's an apt/condo near where I work that has that Greek deli cup pattern as trim on top of a wall. I want to tag "We are happy to serve you" on it.

nickn, Thursday, 6 December 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

If I had more of a New York obsession and also didn't find New York obsession weird and a little sad in midwesterners, I'd totally buy a set of those and make them my go-to cup.

en i see kay, Thursday, 6 December 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

burt_stanton, Thursday, 6 December 2007 22:56 (eighteen years ago)
