Loved her in that Alice in Wonderland movie. Why was her filmography so small?
― abanana, Monday, 8 March 2010 08:51 (sixteen years ago)
Too "big" for movies is the consensus.
Just saw a docfilm on her, which has plenty of insufferable redundacies. Alas, her secomd husband, a junior-high sweetheart with whom she reconnected AFTER 70+ YEARS, just died.
One of the funniest moments in the doc is her take after Hubby 2 says "I thought she was dead."

I'd never before seen a kinescope of her singing "Diamonds" on TV around 1949, and man, she looked different. (ie I've seen her on TV and elsewhere for 40+ years and she's always been that moptopped satchelmouth.)

Thanks for the reminder. I need to get a Carol Channing's B'Day party screening of Alice in Wonderland together!

so this opens in LA tomorrow, elsewhere in 2 weeks. Mine is the first 'rotten' review on RT so I'm bracing for a sliming by vengeful, basement-dwelling theatre queens.

Worth watching if Logo or PBS cuts it down to an hour.

Her very lengthy NYT obit mentions that for years she dined on raw veggies (brought in a tureen) to parties, restaurants, and the White House.

Seriously, what was her deal? She seems like one of the oddest personalities ever to spring from American show business. Watching her on old episodes of What’s My Line?, she’s terrible at playing the game but her manner is so off-puttingly unusual and her interstitial remarks on the show indicate some sort of strange genius. How did she ever happen?
