Secular, and socialist kurds blown up by religious fanatics. By attacking the kurds are the fundamentalists trying to keep the US bogged down in Iraq past the summer, the end of this year, forever? Can Iraq survive as a united country in the face of suvch destabilising influencces?

It definitely looks like a targeted attack at least:

Mohammed Ihsan, minister for human rights for the Kurdish regional government, said the dead included senior figures in the provincial government - Irbil Governor Akram Mintik, Deputy Prime Minister Sami Abdul Rahman, Minister of Council of Ministers Affairs Shawkat Sheik Yazdin and Agriculture Minister Saad Abdullah.
