Athlete's Foot, Ringworm, Scabies and their ilk

I need advice.

After never having set foot in a gymnasium since high school, I recently joined the YMCA - used the showers, pool, sauna, locker room, etc. - and now there is this itchy raised area on the sole of my foot. I've since worn flip-flops in aforementioned areas.

I figure it's athlete's foot, but it's not at the toes at all (which is where the commercials always show it striking), but only on the sole of one foot. It itches like hell and it's red and vaguely "C" shaped.

I trust amateur doctors as much as the real ones, so give your advice. Also, relay lurid tales of ringworm and roommates with scabies, please.

Hmm. Is it red because it's inflamed, or because the weight you put on it has made it so? Also, do you have similar raised track-like marks anywhere else on your body, but particularly on your hands between your fingers? Do other parts of your body itch too, despite being unaffected? If so, that could be scabies.

Well, call your doctor first...

But athlete's foot isn't just something that occurs between the toes, it can also afflict the sides of your feet or sole (which MIGHT be your case, and i stress "MIGHT"). The same fungus can also infiltrate your pubic hair, in which case, it's called "jock itch".

The best thing that's worked for me is Lotrimin' powder spray. Anti-fungal cream, powder, and liquid spray has never really worked, but the powder spray has seemed to do wonders for me, probably because that stuff is cold pressured and when it leaves the spray and coats your skin/hair, it is COLD! and probably freezes off the fungus in a cold shock.

So, unless you have an irrational fear of doctors, go to your local supermarket, and buy that.. (I think both powder spray for jock itch and athlete's foot will work). If that doesn't work in days, SEE A DOCTOR FOR F'IN SURE.

(and don't assume it's something really nasty unless your doctor confirms that it is)

I've had scabies once before, and I remember them well. This is only on the sole of one foot, which is not the typical scabies attack... but maybe I'll throw some Quell on there too in a brutal scorched earth policy...

Scabies are awful! Especially at night....

andy is this the y in berkeley? please tell me NO

No, Oakland Y... but you should still be wearing something on your feet. I've NEVER had foot fungus trouble 'til now, I always thought I was immune because of good hygiene, I don't wear socks to bed and wear sandals alot to allow air to circulate... now I'm stricken!!

(It's pretty mild, though, whatever it is...)

I've gotten either athlete's foot or jock itch from EVERY gym I've been to, and that's even while wearing socks while changing clothes. It doesn't matter what gym... the cleanest most boring gym has that fungus too. Problem is, the clothes you take on and off will usually drag across the floor at one point, and this is enough to rub the fungi on your feet. It's criminally easy to catch.

It's fucked because no gym will really warn you about it, because they want to try and sell you some mega-SOOPER DEAL membership, and being honest and using the word "fungus" in the sell usually will deter unknowing customers.

Jock itch??!! I have that to look forward to as well?

Maybe I'll return to my former fitness regimen of caber tossing and solo medicine ball out in the forest primeval.

(Cups nuts gently with worried expression...)

so i apparently have ringworm. the rashes don't look like rings to me, but hey, that's why I'm not pulling in those tall doctorin' dollars. anyway, i had no idea it would be so fucking EXCRUCIATING - the itchy rashes themselves aren't so bad on their own, but when I do anything even slightly active I guess the infection just totally inflames, because the most amazing needle-like pain cascades over my entire body and my skin turns red like a tomato. FUCK FUNGUS

I probably sound like a total pussy, it's not like i have cancer or anything. but NNNG.

They thought I had ringworm when I was 11.

OH my God! That medicine was gross. In my opinion, it tasted like sunblock, or lotion!

I feel bad for you! I had to go see the doctor so many times. I couldn't take it. Then when they told me I didn't have it, I was relived and mad! They made me go through all of that and I didn't even have it!
