a whine about wine

This comes from a conversation I was having with G earlier. Why is it that sometimes a wine that you have on holiday, which tastes fantastic, becomes bland and rubbish when you open a bottle at home? Is it purely psychological in that you rsurroundings are different and the odds are that you are more stressed/cold whatever?

possibly, it stands to reason that if you're feeling relaxed everything will look a little rosier.

it also depends on how many bottles you've had before that. but psychological reasons definitely apply. I guess if you had one before that you thought is nice, the next time you have it you also kind of anticipate it to be great too, subconsciously taking account of the great time you had on holiday etc.

Barry is making a right mutt out of himself today, eh?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, foolish to the extreme. unless he is to use a plastic knife. in which case the threat of electrocution will be avoided.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Barry the mutt, yes

chris (chris), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Hello.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the reason my bottle tasted bad is because it cost EUR 3.65

MikeyG (MikeyG), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

and that you're not supposed to taste the bottle.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

even two bottles from the same cask can taste different.

also, grocery stores are notorious for leaving crates of wine in hot warehouses and transporting it in un-air conditioned trucks, which changes the taste, as heat is wine's enemy. the same wine from a restaurant or wineseller, you know and avoid these things, will taste better.

robin (robin), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

and now i'm left with a nearly full box of raspberry crunchy nut cornflakes

robin (robin), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

food-pairing/palate is probably the biggest factor here, actually.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Imagine me saying this in a snooty tone:

"Some wine doesn't travel well."

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

raspberry cornflakes sound nice

"Some wine doesn't travel well."

Some girls wander by mistake.
