OHMIGOD, I HAVE A MULLET!!!

Help me. I am never going to Hair By Fairy again. It's totally unironic. I just wanted to get all the blonde bits snipped off, and this is all there is left.

So...

1) What should I do with my mullet? Should I start wearing a trucker hat and a wifebeater and lots of trashy silver jewellery just go with it? Or should I make an apologetic attempt to hide the fact that yes, it is actually a mullet?

2) Whatever happened with Stevem's haircut? I somehow missed the thread where the results were posted. Or maybe no one except me cared. ;-)

getitfixed

Huckadelphia (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, tough break!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

we're not allowed to tell you about steve's hair...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't really get it "fixed". It's so short at the front/sides/on top that the only way to make it not a mullet would be to cut the back, and I refuse to do that. I just have to wait for it to grow.

HSA says I look like a "skinhead chick" that's growing it out. Grrrrr.

It will grow back. It will grow back. It will grow back.

I really like the natural colour of it, though. I had forgotten what colour it was, and I think it's pretty. It's taken TWENTY YEARS for me to be able to say that, though.

I just have to stay out of Hoxton, eh? Heh, I'm going to Northampton tonight, maybe I will fit in.

X-POST - COME ON!!! SPILL THE BEANS ON WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO STEVEM'S HAIR!!!

the river fleet, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

get hitched to billy bob thornton. you know you want to :-)

You're just jumping on the Mark C bandwagon aren't you?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

AAAARRRGGGGHHH!!! NOOOOOO!!!!

Why, god, why? that's worse than a mullet! I am now quite happy with my mullet by comparison!

the river fleet, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

it's pretty much back at this level now

http://base58.com/pics/photos/stevem_0305_squint.jpg

which was taken last May, so i guess if i let it grow it will be back to how it was a week ago by SEPTEMBER

OH DEAR WHAT A PITY NEVER MIND

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, PHEW!!! You really had me scared for a second there! That's much better.

I think I just have to avoid any sort of trendy or cool or even vaguely stylish clothes until this thing grows out. I would rather people thought I was a white trash housewife from Vermont than people think I'm from Hoxton. heh.

the river fleet, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

does the beret help?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

well Kate the only solution is to buy a trans-am next.

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

OR PERHAPS....

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Photoshoppers are encouraged here!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Pink, do you want me to look like a hippie chicken? Sheesh!

Well, a Trans Am would help if maybe I could drive. I tried to drive my mum's Subaru while I was in the States, and I was fine with the gear switching and all, but she kept shouting KATIE!!! YOU'RE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD!!! AAAIIIIYYYEEEEE!!!

Perhaps I can just get a broken one and put it up on blocks in Russell Square. I'm sure the Duke of Bedford won't mind.

the river fleet, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

and listen to metallica. metallica goes along w/ the mullet and the trans am.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

But you need to keep your ears warm surely?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never EVER listened to Metallica and I never will. I've been listening to nothing but my Great Lost Love Of My Life's (from now on, known as the GLLOML, which is Welsh for bastard or something) ironic Japanese pop band.

the river fleet, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

no, you need FOGHAT.

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Think of how pleased HSA will be when you break into an impromtu "I Just Wanna Make Love To You"

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought that said Lonesome Dave Pervert for a mo

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Now Foghat, I could go with. Totally Freedom Rock. SLOOOOW RIDE!!!! Yeah.

HSA hates it. Well, fair is fair. I hate his haircuts when he gets them. I should keep the mullet until he grows back the Bobby Gillespie hair he had in his 20's. HAH!

the river fleet, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I'm off to Northampton for the spacerock. At least HSA can rest assured that I won't run off with Sonic Boom because I'm too ashamed of my bad mullet.

the river fleet, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

if you don't sweat it ain't rock and roll

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Move to Canada...Take up hockey. All mullets are welcome.

jim wentworth (wench), Thursday, 5 February 2004 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

so HSA ain't no fool for the city?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 5 February 2004 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

On reflection, I have decided that it is not actually a mullet, but rather, a shag. Somehow this comforts me. Heh.

the river fleet, Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Could you pin it up in some way?

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha! I put the long bits in a ponytail this morning, and I looked like a lesbian.

It will grow back, I keep telling myself that.

My hair worries have been a bit diminished this morning by finding out that I require surgery on my hand. Ugh. That will most definitely NOT grow back if something goes wrong.

the river fleet, Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no, I was gonna say I hope it's not serious, but if you've got to have surgery, then I guess it is. Sorry. :-(

StoopidPink (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yikes! Is it scary surgery? Hope all is OK.

Hair by Fairy have done well enough by me so far, but I have low standards of hairstyling. Hence the paying a tenner for a 'do.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

God Kate, hope it's not too serious.

(x-post)

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Supposedly it's not major surgery, it's like outpatient surgery or something. It's just scary cause it's on my wrist, which I use for EVERYTHING, you know? I have a "Ganglon Bursa" (SP?) sticking out of my wrist in a really disgusting fashion. Apparently, it's not a bone, which is what I thought it was. It swelled up before, and I wrapped it up tight and it went away. It has been like this for weeks now and isn't going down, so I went to the doctor, and she pushed and whacked at it, and it didn't go down, so she's sending me to have it operated on.

However, I *know* that I have to do this, because my mum had one, and she never had it treated, and it grew into a tumour which ate half her hand, and now she has only minimal use of her left hand, and I'd just about rather die than lose the use of a hand. :-(

Surgery won't be for months, though, knowing the NHS. So I have a really long time to be freaked out by it.

the river fleet, Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yikes indeed. Ganglion = nerve bundle thingy? I have little poky one on back of right hand, hurts like hell if I whack it on anything. Yours sounds much chunkier - has it got much bigger recently? All the best with the procedure - let us know the progress and we can ooh and ahh squeamishly (if you don't mind).

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I was told that it was escaped fluid from my joints run horribly amok. (Even though it doesn't feel like fluid, it feels like a bone. But I suppose, if it's a bone, not fluid, they'll find out when they open it up.)

Liz, if you have one, see yer doctor. They can be treated. Apparently the old cure was to whack them really hard with a bible (Yes, my Doctor telling me stories like this FILLS me with confidence and utterly removes my horrid fear of doctors) but it's much better now. Mine has about tripled in size over the past month, hence the concern. But I will let you know what the process is like, and how scary the surgery is, and keep you posted, should you choose to follow suit.

the river fleet, Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Cor blimey. Can a style bible be substituted for the whacking, do you think? Whoa, fluid run amok sounds crazy. So it's solidified or something...?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

(The whacking with bible or style bible is *discouraged* now because apparently there were too many cases of whacking the Ganglon but also breaking bones and sheeit.)

the river fleet, Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Eeeeeee! I am icky about breaking hands/fingers. Posibbly because I am a flautist ninny.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Argh! Tell me about it! The computer, the guitar, the drawing... does it HAVE to be my right hand?

the river fleet, Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate, I've got loads of them, they're not so bad, but whacking them has never worked for me either.

chris (chris), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
AAARRRGGGHHHHHH!!!

Rather than starting another thread about my hair disaster, I'll revive the old one. This happens with alarming regularity whenever I decide to get a haircut or dye, that it goes horribly wrong. Maybe I should give up and become a hippie. Sigh.

I went to get highlights yesterday (at the place that gave me a mullet before - when will I ever learn?) and tried to explain carefully that I did not want stripey hair, I wanted subtle highlights. So finally I think I make the girl understand, and she puts in the foil and the goo and all that. (Ah, the Government has no access to my thoughts for half an hour.) But then she takes it out really quickly - I tell her "My hair does not bleach that quickly, I think you should leave it in a bit longer" but she ignores me.

My hair dries, and it HAS NOT CHANGED COLOUR AT ALL except for a little Mrs. Robinson streak at the front. This has cost me £50. So I go to Suzy's and moan and complain that even though it doesn't look bad, it does not look like £50 worth of hairdyeing has been done to my hair. So Suzy gives me a lecture support about not being English and Afraid To Complain and frog-marches me back to the salon to complain and ask them to re-do it.

So another woman takes over. Who promptly gives me ginger stripes. I know that it will fade, but right now, especially under bright light (such as usually happen onstage) I look like a bloody tabbycat. Sigh.

I'm really upset because everyone else in my band got such awesome haircuts/colours and I will have to hide behind my laptop. :-(

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Thursday, 19 May 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Do you have any pix to show us, Kate? Maybe it's not that bad and you're just not used to it yet??

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 19 May 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

No pictures, praise god. I should have got AMP to do one last night, but I was too ashamed.

I mean, it's better than it was since I've washed it because the worst part was that the woman blow dried it EVEN THOUGH I SPECIFICALLY ASKED HER NOT TO and it went all flat and limp and looked horrid. It's somewhat less stripey now that the natural curl is back. I just hate it.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Thursday, 19 May 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

suzy's suggestion to complain was a good one. my (likewise good) suggestion is that you never go back to that place again. for £50, you could have had your hair cut (though not highlighted) at vidal's in monmouth street.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 19 May 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

and while i'm on my soapbox, i'll add that the language barrier is dangerous when it comes to hair. i was made fun of by my friends in prague for seeking out the english guy who i'd heard worked at an old town salon instead of just going to a czech stylist, but i got my own back when everyone else had weird mullet-y 'dos with bright purple or red stripes as a result of cultural hair exchange.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 19 May 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

Also, as I discovered last night when I got my hair highlighted and had the stripe look fear and discussed this with my hairdresser for like 10 minutes, cap works better than foils for blending highlights with hair.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 19 May 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

I'm always so scared of being considered racist for not wanting my hair cut by someone that doesn't speak English as their first language. But some things are very subtle - the difference between "streaks" and "stripes" for example.

I can get my hair cut for a lot cheaper than £50. What I wanted was highlights. H@1r By F@1ry is not even as cheap as it used to be. :-(

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Thursday, 19 May 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

Is that the place in Ne@l's yard? Looked pretty cheap when i was there.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

Yes. The sign said dye starting at £25. They charged me £50. :-(

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

I was almost tempted to get a cut and blow dry there because my own hairdresser's so expensive. He's charging £45 for a c&b these days. I really need a trim too, my curls are starting to flop.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

what is wrong with red stripes?!?!

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

I just don't think they're good with long hair. I think that's the thing - everyone I know who went there for a short, trendy doo was fine. Anyone who has been there with long hair they want to keep pretty has had a rubbish time. I got a trim locally for about £18 which I thought was extortionate but not really in London.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

Even if you've got the right word in the other language it can be a disaster. Nick's old flatmate tried to get a haircut in Paris by asking for 'la gamine' and came out looking fairly diesel instead of like Juliette Binoche (who she resembled) with Audrey Hepburn hair.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

highlights usually are more expensive than whole-head dyes. if you've got light-ish hair to begin with and a confident friend, it can be much cheaper and a lot more fun to get an old-school frosting kit (with a cap as mentioned above).

xpost - nothing is wrong with red stripes, except it can be a problem if you asked for auburn highlights.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

I've got deceptively lightish hair. It is naturally quite blonde, but it takes a *f*ck* of a lot of bleach and time to get it to lighten. Which has surprised so many hairdressers who can't be bothered to check. :-(

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

Kate, I understand that you didn't get what you asked for but your plain-text description of your hair sounds utterly fantastic.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

So another woman takes over. Who promptly gives me ginger stripes. I know that it will fade, but right now, especially under bright light (such as usually happen onstage) I look like a bloody tabbycat.

this is the look i WANT. offended? ooooh yesh.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

you think i should bite the bullet and get it done?
will it look hella gay?
is it 90% likely to be nothing like i imagine?
do i have money to throw at a hairdresser?
will i lose my punkrock credentials?
do i ask too many questions?

fankyoo!

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

i'm serious btw. don't make me kill another thread.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

you want to get ginger highlights? sure. go and do it. i have no idea what you look like, mind.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

your heart wasn't in that, i can tell.
shockingly enough, i'm on the latest 'what do you look like' thread. wearing a hat. hm.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 19 May 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

maybe if i change my name to kate...

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 19 May 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

I sympathise, Kate, because last time I went to the hairdresser he gave me a ginger mullet! The ginger wasn't the hairdressers fault, but the mullet and giant fringe was. I didn't complain, of course. How stripey are the ginger stripes? I think it sounds cool.

Cathy (Cathy), Thursday, 19 May 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

i think it sounds good too. if you hadn't noticed.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 19 May 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...
