Director's Commentary

I am surprised that this didn't garner a thread of its own last week. Perhaps it did. I think it is on again tonight. So here is a place for commentary on Director's Commentary. I might actually get to see most of it tonight, having been snowed away from it first time out.

I spoke with the Steve they call 'Carsmile' about this and he - being the only British person ever to see MST3K - confirmed my guess that it was an attempt to do a similar thing. I, however, have seen neither. And so, like Ludwig, I must say "Whereof we have not seen, we must remain silent".

I have not seen it, but from the trailer it seems like an update of The Staggering Stories of Ferdinand de Bargos but with a slightly different plot device. And Rob Brydon. I missed it last week as it was scheduled against Frasier, but may video it if I remember.

I have seen MST3K!

I've seen MST3K too, in fact it was shown in the UK on the SciFi Channel for a few years.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't it show as part of ITV's late night schedule in around 1997? With Dr Katz?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

No, it's only ever been on SciFi here, though the film version has been on ITV and Sky Movies.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The film version shouldn't count, it is not very good.

It's good, but not as good as McSweeney.net's truly incredible Jayson Blair commentary for 'The Goonies':

The first half of last night's episode was him doing a commentary on Flambards. It was brilliant.

The second half was on The Bounder. It was less brilliant.

Trouble is that Brydon's trying to interest us in Peter DeLane as the character, and he's too similar to Alan Partridge (industry inside/outsider, failed personal life etc.) and Rowley Birkin QC off The Fast Show (Hee-hee, drunk, etc.). It does have a tendency to get far too obvious with its jokes...

But when it is funny, it is very, very funny.

Curiously, I agree with Swygart; I think he is just about on top of the money.

The programme is surely more a good thing than a bad thing.

Also, it gave me an excuse not to watch Alan Hansen last night.

I don't know what this other numbers-&-letters programme is that you're all on about.

The film version shouldn't count, it is not very good.

It's a reasonable fast food version of the full meal.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It mentioned Bicester, which guarantees classic status for me.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 February 2004 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"I spent some time inside, for something I now see as a cry for help. Not a loud cry you understand, certainly not as loud as my hostages, hehehe."
