Firstly, apologies to any Spurs fans. I feel your pain.

Alan Hansen has just said it may be the greatest game ever and having seen the highlights I'm tempted to agree. If nothing else it has probably the best save since Banks kept out Pele in the 70' world cup.

If City can do that with 10 men, just think what they could do with 8 or 9.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I only saw the bloody first half, as I had other plans. Typical bloody City.

Daniel (dancity), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

We're not really here, indeed.

Daniel (dancity), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

As KK said, they'll still be talking about this "long after we're six feet under or cremated or whatever it is we decide to do to ourselves".

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 5 February 2004 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

that is the thing that stuck in my mind the most, Kelvin going absolutely bonkers.....again

chris (chris), Thursday, 5 February 2004 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

And I only saw the second half. "So much for the Manchester Derby" I said as I saw the score. It was fantastic. As a Manchester City hater I was in two minds about what I wanted to see, but as soon as they scored their first I was firmly on their side. Ish.

As soon as it finished I thought about Matt DC and beat myself off decided to post to ILE as soon as possible. But I'd had a couple of ales and never did. Until now. So.

(p.s. my sympathies. It must have fucking sucked to be a Spurs fan)

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, did anyone else think this was a 1337 |-|4x0r thread?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I was sparing the blushes of the Spurs fan's. They suffered enough last night.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

My Spurs supporting mate went to play a five-a-side game after the first half, and remained in blissful ignorance until he got home.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

But fucking hell those three Spurs goals were gorgeous. I'm so happy to have Ziege back regardless of last night.

As I said on the other thread, I was the only Spurs fan in the pub last night, and everyone was laughing at me. Apart from the girl I was sitting with, who was complaining about how the half a million pound house she wanted to buy didn't have anywhere to park her Porsche. In my despondent state, this was the most annoying thing I had ever heard.

But if the game had involved any other team, I would probably have been creaming myself.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

For the sake of my sanity, I am choosing to ignore Barry's comment upthread.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

awful lot of ppl get wet from footie it seems

omg, Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

tell her to park her Porsche right HERE

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

In your ass?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"As KK said, they'll still be talking about this "long after we're six feet under or cremated or whatever it is we decide to do to ourselves"."

Isn't KK just lovely? Next it'll be 'in the next life, if you believe in that sort of thing, Shaun Wright Phillips will be...'

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Thursday, 5 February 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Barry's been quoted!!!

This was the best game I've ever seen

From Mark C
Have your say on 606

go mark!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

IT WAS NOT THE GREATEST GAME EVER WILL PEOPLE STOP SAYING SO!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

indeed, Spain v Yugoslavia in Euro 2000 was miles and miles better that that game. as was Liverpool 5 Forest 0 in 1986.

chris (chris), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

And when Tottenham beat Southampton 6-2 in 1994-95 in the FA Cup with a Ronnie Rosenthal hatrick.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

that champions league final 1999 that man united won was the best one innit.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

nah, that was rubbish ;o)

you were two - nil down in that weren't you?

Ken, you are in so much trouble - I was so pi$$ed off at that game

chris (chris), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i was gonna mention that FA cup final when cantona scored the winning goal as well ;)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

(that match was pretty crap though)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Alaves 4 Liverpool 5 is a contender

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

We watched about 30 mins of the first half & then J said 'turn it over, there's no point in watching it.' Awww bless him!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The Manyoo Juve game in the 1999 Champions League game was better.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought LFC 5-0 Forest was 1988, Chris? No better than EFC 5-0 Man United in Oct 1984, anyway - Big Ron's Fancy Dans annihilated by Sheedy, Reidy, Sharpy, Inchy, et ally.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Inter 3 Sampdoria 4 in 96-97 followed pretty much the same pattern, except Sampdoria kept all eleven men on the pitch. Gosh, how I hated Samp.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I seem to remember a League Cup tie from 1991-ish - Coventry-Forest, perhaps - where one side was 4-0 up, pulled back to 4-4, before winning 5-4. There's also that elusive 6-6 draw in a minor cup competition involving Tranmere in the late 80s that I seem to have imagined.

Obviously, I loved EFC 4-4 LFC in Feb '91 - the game which precipitated Dalglish's departure - a match in which Everton were behind four times (at least two of the L'pool goals beauties) but forced a second replay (which we won, thanks be to Dave Watson) thanks to comical Red defending.

MUFC 3-5 WBA (Dec '78) made a hooj impression on me as a bookish footy-sceptic kid and the recent Palace 3-4 Ipswich might be one of the best I've ever seen in the flesh.

These are all goalfests, though. How about some memorable 1-0s?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

was it? I was doing my paper-round at the time and I thought I finished that in 87? I'm getting old, my memory is going. I remember that Everton game though - that was good. The manyoo v city game from last year when the goat scored in the last minute was ace too (helped immensely by Fitzy and his brother doing Roy Keane impressions the whole time)

chris (chris), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The first Liverpool-Newcastle 4-3 game, plus the Alaves match - so many goals, so much excitement, and it was in a European final!!

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 5 February 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

there were tears at the end of that, yes.

chris (chris), Thursday, 5 February 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember texting a sarky message to The Nipper at the end of that breathless 5-4 and getting "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA" back in response. I still don't know what he meant.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 5 February 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

ah yes, it was abeautiful night at Mell ST

chris (chris), Thursday, 5 February 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

When commentators shout, nay scream 'HE'S DONE IT!!!' you know it has to have been some match. And Mike Ingham is not a serial screamer, like, say, Jonatahn Pearce.

Daniel (dancity), Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, the penalty shootout in last night's CIS cup semi final was a joy to behold.

And DeBoer misses again!!!!

chris (chris), Friday, 6 February 2004 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It was absolutely hilarious (sorry Ally)

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 6 February 2004 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

the Man U v Arsenal FA Cup semi final replay from a few years back (featuring the infamous Giggsy hairy chest exposure after THAT goal) is one of my favourite matches of recent years - it really had everything (missed penalty, red card, offside goal controversy, astonishing winning goal late on...)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 6 February 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the difference between Tottenham Hotspur and David Blunket.

David Blunkett can hold onto a lead.
