This could probably be filed under @d@ml's product endorsement thread but I'm envisioning more of a consumer reports type approach based on some recent testing.

Search:
POM
Northern California-based pomegranate juice promising higher anti-oxidant intake than red wine, cranberry and cherry juices. Found in a bulbous glass bottle. Taste: tart, pleasantly sweet, like an intense cranberry concentrate but not overbearing. The price, on the other hand: not so sweet... $3.50 for a 15oz. bottle. NOTE: They're offering buy one/get one free coupon's on the site, it's a pop-up.

Destroy:
Steap Green Tea Soda
This tasted as bad as you can imagine. Bottled green tea outside of Asia has a tendency to be overloaded in sugar and as you can imagine, this syrupy mess is enough to make jagermeister seem bland. I choked down a sip, followed by 2 desperate swigs and then tossed it into the recycle bin.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 5 February 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

pom is a great mixer for vodka and champagne.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 5 February 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

At the excellent Vietnamese place I went to last night, I was introduced to what my Vietnamese-American friend Yen called coconut juice -- it wasn't quite a sparkling soda, at least I remember no carbonation, but it was a bit like sweet sugar water -- nowhere near as intense or overbearing though, happily -- with a few chunks of coconut in the glass as well. Quite tasty!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

It wasn't just err.. coconut milk?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 5 February 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

No, because it was a clear liquid.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a drink recently where the label on the rear humbly confessed to 'having qualities that cannot be fully explained'. I found this slightly alarming what is more I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the thing. I spent about 5 hours with this drink; as it was so foul this was how long it took to finish. It is non alcoholic and in the D category.

see ar (see ar), Thursday, 5 February 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I brought a bunch of limoncello back from italy but it's rather sweet straight, is it criminal to mix it?

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 5 February 2004 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

ha. an old roommate brought limoncello back for me in a haze of italian bliss, then had to apologize for crap gift-giving because it was basically undrinkable. we eventually wound up mixing it with vodka and lots of soda water.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 5 February 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Was it Pocari Sweat, see ar?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 5 February 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

jesus christ N.. That looks worse. Mine was a brown screw top bottle with yellow label, available in safeway UK.

see ar (see ar), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

limoncello is great! Keep it in the freezer and drink it after meals. I wouldn't drink it just to get buzzed though.

They sure are promoting the heck out of that POM stuff around here. Been meaning to try it but haven't yet..

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Farmers Union Iced Coffee...get it in to yer.

REB

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Pom is great, but I've only been able to afford it once.

Search: Jarritos, latin american soda in several flavors including pineapple, grapefruit, and tamarind. It's sweetened with cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup, so it doesn't have that thick, syrupy aftertaste that most american soft drinks do.

webcrack (music=crack), Thursday, 5 February 2004 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

oh my god limoncello....

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 5 February 2004 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

What's that totally manky italian drink that's brown, sticky and tastes like medicine? I foolishly bought a bottle in duty free once, and even in my post-university penury days failed to finish the bottle (I gave it about 18 months of occasional '"Maybe it's not so bad with coke" type moments before chucking it out)

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 5 February 2004 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

chinotto you mean?

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 5 February 2004 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

or do you mean jagermeister or something?

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 5 February 2004 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm.. neither of those sound familiar.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 5 February 2004 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

pimms?

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 5 February 2004 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, you were drinking Coconut water in that it's the juice from the inside of the coconut, which is completely sterile and can be used in a drip for rehydration purposes!
Can't you mix limoncello with prosecco? for a refreshing and sophiticated cocktail?

Nick were you drinking one of those awful balsam drinks? D had some of those in our old flat from Lithuania

chris (chris), Thursday, 5 February 2004 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah the limoncello is more like a dessert than a drink, no way you could drink it to get buzzed since it's just too sweet, but sipping a double shot glass's worth after a meal works out pretty well. I fear I am an american and approached it with a "well I wonder what it'll feel like to get WASTED on this stuff?" attitude.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

As I've mentioned on Pumpkin Blog: POKARI SWEAT. Only recently have I tried it out and I actually quite like it despite the obv ridiculous name. My mum completely loves it so she buys'em by the dozen. But as she went to Japan (probably because she's turned into a Pokari Swetaholic) she left me with some bottles.

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 5 February 2004 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, you were drinking Coconut water in that it's the juice from the inside of the coconut, which is completely sterile and can be used in a drip for

Really? Wow, that's cool to hear! :-) Well it was delicious and a half, so rah on it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Jarritos is INSANELY sweet, cane sugar or no. All Mexican sodas are... thought the Mexican Squirt in the bottle is pretty kickass.

andy, Thursday, 5 February 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

did anybody else read lauren's first post as "porn is a great mixer for vodka and champagne"

fecking Times New Roman, getting my hopes up like that

it didn't help that Ned's post immediately after says "At the excellent Vietnamese place I went to last night, I was introduced to what my Vietnamese-American friend Yen called coconut juice"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Campari + soda with an orange twist count?

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus coconut juice.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always been suspicious that POM might make one, how shall I put it, extra regular?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing out the ordinary... yet.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm I have been curious about it - especially it's mixed drink potential. And the brand is very hip.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been really curious about it too - y'all have convinced me, and I'm going to go buy some at lunch.

Further bulletins as events warrant.

Wait hold on!!! Spencer was righ lkj;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

kephm, Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

They had POM on sale at the supermarket today (oh crap I forgot to get the buy one get on free coupon!!!) so this had better be good, gygax!

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, not bad, now let's try it with vodka

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i didnt find any pop up coupons :(

ke[hm, Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah me neither, and I even filled out the survey

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay, I buy Pokari Sweat whenever possible too, which is quite regularly really.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 13 February 2004 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

no, it is plain jane trader joe's style.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 13 February 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Those Vietnamese slushees with tapioca are really good. Especially lychee.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Friday, 13 February 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

My girlfriend made some shit called "nuts and berries"...even though there were no nuts and berries in it. It had Chambord and Frangelico in it...thats all i remember. Too sweet.

Spinktron 2000 (El Spinktor), Friday, 13 February 2004 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh I hate that drink.

Ned, dude, you should come up to my 'hood next u r in NYC, it is heaven for that kind of drink. I've like entirely stocked my fridge with coconut water. GOYA BRAND I KISS YOU!! I haven't seen it in ages!

I forgot I don't really care for sugar cane water though.

Allyzay, Friday, 13 February 2004 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, that sounds promising. :-) It's a good counterpart to spice though unlike, say, a mango lassi it doesn't reduce it, which is no bad thing necessarily.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, this hood practically runs the shit from the faucets.

Allyzay, Friday, 13 February 2004 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, remind me where you are in the city now?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Washington Heights.

Allyzay, Friday, 13 February 2004 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw this at the local grocer, it looks vile and disgusting I couldn't imagine what it tastes like (equal parts redbull and clamato?)

About an hour ago I drank a can of "Starbucks Doubleshot", bought from the building vending machine for $1.50. 3 hour Evidence class in progress. I am wide awake. My mouth still burns from the unpleasant chemically aftertaste. Pretty Nasty.

Ingredients: Monfat Milk, Brewed Espresso Coffee, Cream, Sugar, Caramel Color, Ascorbic Acid, Tripotassium Phosphate.

Hunter (Hunter), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Monfat Milk

As opposed to manfat milk

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

For about 5 or 6 times now, I have been drinking water out of a used 1 liter jug of Lipton Tea. Faintly, the tea flavor comes through and it's actually enjoyable. The way I figure it, I could buy one bottle of tea and drink this stuff until the end of time.

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I spotted someone at sitting at the bar on Sunday eve drinking something purple and frothy. I asked them what it was. They said Caffreys and blackcurrant. I made a face. "No, it's nice, try it" they said. So I took a sip. And it wasn't.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I had some lovely black cherry fizzy pop in NYC, Dr Brown's or summat? Really really good, then we looked at the calories/amount of sugar in it.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 08:04 (twenty-one years ago)

COLD BREWED ICED COFFEE.

as opposed to Hot Coffee with Ice cubes thrown in willy nilly.

soooooo goooood.

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i had to make cold-brewed iced coffee in giant, knee-high tubs when i worked at a cafe in college (it was the base for all iced drinks). it's good, yes, but think for a moment about the torment involved in making it next time you enjoy some.

new favorite beverages:
- tamarind juice from the old dude out front of zaragoza grocery, mixed with some ketel one
- iced coffee from the gelato lab with cubes of frozen coffee instead of regular ice
- iced tea (sweet or mint) from mara's homemade

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

think for a moment about the torment involved in making it next time you enjoy some.

I've made some, not tubs of it, but, yeah a pain in the ass...anyway, thinking about the workers at VERB being tortured makes me happy.

My gf brought me back some looseleaf tea from TEANY when she was in NYC over the weekend. I forget what the flavor is, but it smells like cream soda, yum yum!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, lately I've been enjoying Vitamin Water -- not so much for the taste (though I appreciate it's not overly sweet) as the fact that it totally works at energizing me. Which is awesome, since I don't drink caffeine anymore.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Sell-out.

Yeah. Game. You're right, JBR. Right now, though, I'm feeling embarrassed that I tried to do-over what was a lame joke to begin with.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)
