Defend the Indefensible: Bob Saget

I saw him do stand up on cable ~10 years ago and he was actually really funny. I know he does that hokey thing on TV but I remember being shocked to find out that was an act, and he actually was funny.

Has anybody else seen Saget doing passable comedy?

Maybe I imagined all of this but remember the dweezil/tesh thing I posted, this was like around the same era.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 5 February 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The direction is horrible, but he at the very least didn't stop the good jokes from happening in the Norm McDonald vehicle Dirty Work that he directed.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 5 February 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently Bob Saget stand up is NOTHING like Bob Saget Full House, America's Funny Dogs, etc. Apparently he's really really foul and actually pretty darn funny (I've never seen him, but I do know people who have at Cobb's, the Punchline, what not and they all say judging him by his TV is pretty unfair.) But I think defending Bob Saget's TV persona is basically impossible (for me anyway, he's so cloying it hurts me to think about him.)

I knew somebody was going to bring up that cameo.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

he's don delillo's brother in law!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 5 February 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Don married to Bob's sister or is Bob married to Don's sister?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 5 February 2004 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - i just made that up

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 5 February 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i just like the idea that in fact it was BOB SAGET who wrote all the lenny bruce parts of underworld. and that in fact don dellilo doesn't know anything about baseball, SAGET wrote all that pafko at the wall stuff. john leonard better recognize!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 5 February 2004 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you making this up?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 5 February 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Cuz if you aren't I have new respect (although like I said I kinda want to hear his stand up for myself, so I might respect him anyway) for Bob Saget.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 5 February 2004 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Let me guess, Alex, you also believe that the Janet's tit incident was an accident.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 5 February 2004 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I neither know nor really care (nor do I think it matters on bit.) I will say judging from the pics that Janet has obviously discovered hidden resources of acting talent not present in Poetic Justice.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 5 February 2004 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I've actually seen him out in L.A. a few times and he seems like a regular smart guy.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 5 February 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I see I'm not needed here, what with Dirty Work and holy crap I'm totally blanking on the title of the Chappelle doper movie!!!!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 5 February 2004 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I should have never dissed him by comparing him to Custos. Coulier the Morrissette fucker is more appropriate.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 5 February 2004 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Even he's funnier than Custos is.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 5 February 2004 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably.

one year passes...
In comedy circles, there’s a famous Saget story about the night his first daughter was born. After a very difficult birth, during which Sherri Saget and her baby almost died, a friend showed up to find Mr. Saget looking utterly destroyed, unshaven, unrecognizable, but holding his newborn.

“Oh my God, Bob, she’s beautiful,” the friend said.

“For a dollar, you can finger her,” Mr. Saget replied.

I saw him getting drunk in a hotel bar on Hawaii once. This immediately raised my opinion of him.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

he always did look suitably miserable hosting "america's funniest home videos".

latebloomer: We kissy kiss in the rear view (latebloomer), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

That quote is quite possibly the most offensive thing I've ever heard! I'm impressed!

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

A friend of mine interviewed him once. She didn't have much to say about it, despite my considerable prodding.

Huk-L, Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

He probably said "For a dollar, you can finger me."

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I went to two tapings of 'America's Funniest' during the... glory years and I was shocked how funny he was in between the shitty copy he had to read.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Dude's gotta work, y'know?

Huk-L, Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

That's the second most brilliant offensive/off-colour thing I've ever read. The first would be when I visited Sarah Lawrence and was sitting at a table with four girls, all of whom were Jewish. One of them, Bronwen, asked me if I was Jewish. I replied, "No, I'm devoid of any spirituality." She mused, "Oh. I guess you're not a member of the pure race, then!"

"I was watching the March movie at a screening at my friend's house, and I couldn't stop doing the voice-overs of the penguins."

Most people who do that at somebody's house end up punched in the face. Therefore, he must have been hilarious.

(disclosure: I have an inexplicable crush on Bob Saget. There's something about his trapped-animal look on AFHV that gets to me.)

pullapartgirl (pullapartgirl), Sunday, 6 November 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

Therefore, he must have been hilarious.

If the movie is made in 'For a dollar you can finger her' mode, then it will be sick, beautiful genius. If in AFHV mode, NOOOOOOOOOOOO.

saw about half of the CC roast last night. What was fascinating was that they let "fucking" stand if it was an all-purpose modifier, bleeped it if it was specifically sexual (eg, "Lisa Lampanelli's fucked so many comedians there's a light over her bed to let them know they have 2 minutes left"). Oh that FCC. (Unbleeped version runs late next Sat.)

Great Cloris Leachman vibrator joke.

I admit that Norm MacDonald figured out a new way for him to be utterly unfunny. (His response to the "Henry Fonda picking blueberries" dis was excellent tho.)

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 13:45 (seventeen years ago)

FCC jurisdiction over naughty language on cable = 0.

Pancakes Hackman, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, literally. BUT ... in making that distinction, CC is clearly aping those kind of "decency" standards. Like anyone watching THAT show cares which way "fucking" is used?

Anyway, it was nice to hear one of the comics raise the "how many ppl turned down roasts to get to Saget" issue.

i love that shit

I think that was true for most people. I know I was like whaaaaaaaaaat and then learned he'd been working that way for even longer than I'd been aware of him while holding down a total G-rated nice guy persona as his dayjob.

the one time I saw him in 2006, it almost felt like he was making up 20% of his set as he went along...but it was landing so well. the set was very, very blue, but like, it did have craft to it. but he'd jump back and forth to talking about his ex-wife and mentioning that he fingered Kimmy Gibbler (I don't think he really did, obv).

He did lean a bit on the Full House/dirty comic dichotomy a lot but he had the crowd eating out of his hand. Played a little guitar, mostly parodies of songs. one of the lyrics (a parody of "I Want It That Way") referred to Full House - "So the jokes weren't always funny/Well, fuck you. I made lots of money".

I know he took Norm's death hard. was just finding his hunger again too :(

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 January 2022 01:55 (four years ago)

there was a dude at the show I attended who was clearly fucked out of his gourd, and Saget started ribbing him, but he actually managed to attempt to get him assistance/assure he had transportation after the show, while working it into his bit and making it funny at the same time. def had a heart.

I have a Bob Saget story to share.

I never really met him. But in 2007 Guster was playing at the Boston Opera House. We noticed that Saget was performing a sold out show at the Orpheum down the street, and we thought it’d be funny to invite him to appear on stage with us...
