RJG (RJG), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Every time I've been to Glasgow I've beaten someone up. Not again.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 5 February 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Today on a train I saw a wee lassie who reminded me of, or who was, a female version of RJG. Save that she was wee.

I thought her pretty.

the bluefox, Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think RJG's pretty.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 6 February 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG is handsome. Cook is pretty.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 6 February 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Pretty what?

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 6 February 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

one easter i happened to be up in glasgow and sonic youth were doing a signing session at the old RAT record shop in the virginia street galleries (i assume the shop's long since gone - this would have been '86 time as they were signing copies of EVOL). they asked whether there were any good alternative music radio shows in glasgow/scotland and i gave them contact details for frank skerrett on radio clyde and andy cameron on bbc radio scotland, having assured them that they were tireless champions of new music. i've no idea what if anything transpired but whenever i saw any sonic youth people in subsequent years they never mentioned anything about it.

no.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I got phone-interviewed by a lovely woman from the glasgow herald today re: blogs.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

who was that?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ab1g4il W1ld. she had a very nice voice.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

do you know her?

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I know who she is. I like her writing.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I was talking to Spiers again early, and I sent your love.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope she says nice things about me.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope everyone says nice things about me.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I once saw Graham Spiers staggering drunkenly down Byres Road, having just left Cookie to go for a taxi. It was a beautiful sight and I wish he could have seen it.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a Cookie-Spiers summit?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I had left Cook and I wished he could have seen it. I thought that may have implied he didn't.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

cook could beat up spiers.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Certainly in the state spiers was in that night . . . (someone said somewhere else that was the right way to do ellipses? It looks silly)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, ignore them, they were talking shite.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, this FAP will be on Tuesday night.

ailsa, Sunday, 28 May 2023 01:45 (two years ago)

I can’t come up to Scotland this week any more and am really sorry to miss the funeral. I will raise a glass in Gerry’s honour, and put virtual arms around the shoulders of those of you who are going to be there x

Madchen, Sunday, 28 May 2023 07:26 (two years ago)

Hope to make it along to the Lodge to raise a glass in memory etc

Ward Fowler, Sunday, 28 May 2023 07:34 (two years ago)

I can't make tomorrow night, unfortunately, as we'll be over in Edinburgh. Sorry not to be able to join you.

brain (krakow), Monday, 29 May 2023 21:56 (two years ago)

hi folks I've just this minute finished working and am absolutely knackered, so won't make it along tonight now. Apologies, and hope you have a good time. Best wishes for tomorrow.

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 30 May 2023 17:47 (two years ago)

It was great to see yez - If I'd had the foresight to book a hotel, I also wouldn't have run smack into kicking out time at Bruce Springsteen at Murrayfield.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 30 May 2023 21:38 (two years ago)

Good to see folk. An excellently bizarre evening with the Alpen Lodge jukebox once more delivering the mood-appropriate goods.

ailsa, Tuesday, 30 May 2023 23:25 (two years ago)

thinking of you all today.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 31 May 2023 08:16 (two years ago)

Yes, same here. A hard day for everyone. x

Anyone going to see Delgados at Kelvingrove bandstand in August?

Me!

I don't have a ticket but was thinking of it as I really enjoyed the Barrowlands gig.

― brain (krakow), Saturday, 6 May 2023 17:45 (one month ago) bookmarkflaglink

Krakow, I might have a spare ticket - will know nearer the time, but it's quite likely

― ailsa, Saturday, 6 May 2023 21:48 (one month ago) bookmarkflaglink

Thanks ailsa. Drop me a line if you do end up with a spare, in case we've not bought any in the meantime (my partner would probably come along too).

Ailsa see you there!! We have now got ticket and (hopefully) accommodation for the weekend.
Karkow hope you can make it - there are still tickets if helpful (slightly surprised).

Covfefe and TV (ken c), Tuesday, 6 June 2023 17:36 (two years ago)

Yay!

eleven months pass...

I'm going to Glasgow this weekend for a gig, never been before. Is it feasible to stay way out of the centre (cheaper hotel) or would that be a bad idea?

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 12:02 (ten months ago)

That will be fine. I'd suggest the West End or Southside (the area around Shawlands)

If the gig is in the centre of town you can get to it easily on the subway from the west end or on local trains from the Southside.

If the gig is down by the Clyde (where the Hydro is for example), I would recommend staying in Finnieston which is part of the West End and has loads of things to do - and lots of hotels around it.

Treblekicker, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 12:38 (ten months ago)

Depends where the gig is and where you're thinking of staying and when you're heading back - taxis can be a nightmare and nightbuses are ridiculously limited.

ailsa, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 12:52 (ten months ago)

Yeah, I'd agree with ailsa that it will depend. I don't use taxis much, but public transport options can be pretty poor

brain (krakow), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 13:51 (ten months ago)

I live in a commuter town which runs into Glasgow and is right next to the airport and you'd think it'd be well connected and you'd be very very wrong.

ailsa, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 14:33 (ten months ago)

The one consolation is, black cabs are (relatively speaking, and solely based on my experience) cheaper in Glasgow than in any other big city in Scotland, never mind London.

I'm intrigued as to what this gig in Glasgow is now!

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:16 (ten months ago)

Gig is in Calton, looking at a very cheap hotel in Crookston.

I'm going to see The Yummy Fur & Lung Leg (they are both supporting Bis)

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:20 (ten months ago)

Just need somewhere cheap to sleep, don't care how crap or out of the way it is, I am used to a long commute to work every day.

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:21 (ten months ago)

Calton? Whatever next.

Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:26 (ten months ago)

FWIW Saint Luke's is not too far a walk from the city centre, although admittedly it has not been strolling weather up here recently. Enjoy the gig!

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:26 (ten months ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot that's there.

Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:29 (ten months ago)

If it's Crookston Hotel, that's ok as it's about five minutes walk from the main road between Paisley and Glasgow so there are buses running that way and it should be fine.

Glasgow taxis are cheap until you accidentally stray out of the Glasgow city boundaries, then they go into full blown highwaymen territory with their mysterious boundary charges which they're not meant to charge but do anyway

ailsa, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:47 (ten months ago)

Trains are pish just now, ScotRail running a reduced timetable. I'm planning attempting to get out of Greenock after a thing on Sunday night and it's pretty much impossible

ailsa, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:48 (ten months ago)

Not sure on pricing, but there's at least two or three guest houses in Dennistoun that you could look at. Definitely avoid The Tartan Lodge, but the others might be ok. That's walkable from St Luke's, which can be handy.

brain (krakow), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 18:14 (ten months ago)

I've booked a room for the night of the GYBE! gig to save me having to deal with late night trains back to Edinburgh

treefell, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 18:27 (ten months ago)

I booked a hotel within 10-15 mins walking distance for the Los Campesinos! gig when it was at St Lukes…then it was moved to the QMU and we’re now looking at. 45-50 minute walk.

hamicle, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 19:13 (ten months ago)

four months pass...

Just had a severe weather alert sent to my phone, and which has apparently gone out to everybody in Glasgow. Scared the shit out of me when it went off! Stay safe ilxors in Scotland.

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 23 January 2025 17:58 (six months ago)

I got the same. I thought it was my smoke alarm for a minute before I worked it out
My work is officially closed tomorrow and we don't have to work even from home

treefell, Thursday, 23 January 2025 18:02 (six months ago)

Same here. Seems like sending a loud rush-hour alarm to everyone at the same time wouldn't be much less dangerous than the storm itself, but I guess we'll find out.

Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 23 January 2025 19:32 (six months ago)

The alarm was about 3000 decibels loud so I hit the button as soon as I got the alert, which then cleared the message off of my screen before I could read it properly. It seems like a massive design flaw given that the sound was unbearable and anyone would want to turn it off immediately.

I'm working from home tomorrow and hoping for a powercut 9am-5pm exactly.

My neighbours upstairs have a trampoline in the garden and they have prepared for the storm by... unchaining it from the fence, and turning it upside down and sitting it untethered in the middle of the communal garden area. This will not end well.

boxedjoy, Thursday, 23 January 2025 20:28 (six months ago)

Same over here, too - I don't think I've ever got one?

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 23 January 2025 20:31 (six months ago)

Maybe the neighbours don't actually like the trampoline?

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 23 January 2025 20:32 (six months ago)

I think they also don't like anyone in our courtyard having windows after this weekend

boxedjoy, Thursday, 23 January 2025 20:35 (six months ago)

Yeah, the design flaw in the alert was stupid. I got mine a couple of minutes after my husband, so I left mine there - the alarm stops after a few rings, then a voice reads out the alert for the visually impaired, but yeah, it'd be good to be able to mute the beeping and still read the message

ailsa, Thursday, 23 January 2025 21:06 (six months ago)

it's sounding very windy already!

boxedjoy, Friday, 24 January 2025 07:48 (six months ago)

When I woke up this morning around 8am it didn't seem as bad as predicted - but it's really picking up speed now round the Luma Building near Braehead, where I'm WFH.

Ward Fowler, Friday, 24 January 2025 09:28 (six months ago)

Do you live in the Luma Building?!

Eyeball Kicks, Friday, 24 January 2025 10:48 (six months ago)

I do! These three rectangular windows are my flat.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/53/Luma_Tower.jpg/1280px-Luma_Tower.jpg

Ward Fowler, Friday, 24 January 2025 10:56 (six months ago)

Wow! Amazing building from the outside - always been curious how the flats are.

Eyeball Kicks, Friday, 24 January 2025 11:34 (six months ago)

Bloody windy here in Hamilton and the storm hasnt even hit Scotland yet. Fingers crossed we all come through unscathed.

Loads of local reports of trees blown over and (dont look boxed joy) flying trampolines including one that bounced off cars in hillhouse and is now lodged up a tree!

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 24 January 2025 11:49 (six months ago)

Eyeball Kicks, if you ever fancy a look round the Luma - hit me up! Flats are nice but not huge, and parts of the building could do with a good clean - converted into flats in 1996 and not much work done on the exterior since then. But definitely one of the things I love about living in Scotland - could never have afforded a property in a listed building in London.

Just when I think this storm has peaked it seems to go up another gear - wild! You would be truly mad to go out in this at the moment.

Ward Fowler, Friday, 24 January 2025 12:16 (six months ago)

Its weird knowing the worst is still to come. Stay safe everyone.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 24 January 2025 12:19 (six months ago)

I didn't know you'd moved to the Luma building! The wind is absolutely mental here just the other side of Braehead from you, not seen a single person out in our estate today.

ailsa, Friday, 24 January 2025 13:44 (six months ago)

I'm working from home and saw a learner driver on the road an hour ago

boxedjoy, Friday, 24 January 2025 13:45 (six months ago)

I work from home anyway, though work today is mostly people posting pictures of their wrecked fences to our Teams chat

ailsa, Friday, 24 January 2025 13:54 (six months ago)

Eyeball Kicks, if you ever fancy a look round the Luma - hit me up!

Thanks - might take you up on that! I was creeping around there some time last year taking photographs.

Eyeball Kicks, Friday, 24 January 2025 14:08 (six months ago)

Do you live in the Luma Building?!

beautiful building.

my window blew in at 6am (before it even got near peak wind). my neighbour's scaffolding nearly collapsed (police closed road) and next thing there's a load of scaffolding guys on it trying to repair it in 90mph (ish) wind. insanity!

stirmonster, Friday, 24 January 2025 15:03 (six months ago)

ailsa, I moved from Dennistoun to the Luma about seven years ago (I moved to Scotland in 2006). Still lots of parts of the city and surrounding area I want to explore, including round where you are (I know Paisley a bit). Perhaps…one distant day…we could have a Lanarkshire FAP!

Funny to get a text alert telling me my local Lidl has reopened - we must be through the worst of it!
