Trains are pish just now, ScotRail running a reduced timetable. I'm planning attempting to get out of Greenock after a thing on Sunday night and it's pretty much impossible
― ailsa, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:48 (one year ago)
Not sure on pricing, but there's at least two or three guest houses in Dennistoun that you could look at. Definitely avoid The Tartan Lodge, but the others might be ok. That's walkable from St Luke's, which can be handy.
― brain (krakow), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 18:14 (one year ago)
I've booked a room for the night of the GYBE! gig to save me having to deal with late night trains back to Edinburgh
― treefell, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 18:27 (one year ago)
I booked a hotel within 10-15 mins walking distance for the Los Campesinos! gig when it was at St Lukes…then it was moved to the QMU and we’re now looking at. 45-50 minute walk.
― hamicle, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 19:13 (one year ago)
Just had a severe weather alert sent to my phone, and which has apparently gone out to everybody in Glasgow. Scared the shit out of me when it went off! Stay safe ilxors in Scotland.
― Ward Fowler, Thursday, 23 January 2025 17:58 (one year ago)
I got the same. I thought it was my smoke alarm for a minute before I worked it outMy work is officially closed tomorrow and we don't have to work even from home
― treefell, Thursday, 23 January 2025 18:02 (one year ago)
Same here. Seems like sending a loud rush-hour alarm to everyone at the same time wouldn't be much less dangerous than the storm itself, but I guess we'll find out.
― Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 23 January 2025 19:32 (one year ago)
The alarm was about 3000 decibels loud so I hit the button as soon as I got the alert, which then cleared the message off of my screen before I could read it properly. It seems like a massive design flaw given that the sound was unbearable and anyone would want to turn it off immediately.
I'm working from home tomorrow and hoping for a powercut 9am-5pm exactly.
My neighbours upstairs have a trampoline in the garden and they have prepared for the storm by... unchaining it from the fence, and turning it upside down and sitting it untethered in the middle of the communal garden area. This will not end well.
― boxedjoy, Thursday, 23 January 2025 20:28 (one year ago)
Same over here, too - I don't think I've ever got one?
― Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 23 January 2025 20:31 (one year ago)
Maybe the neighbours don't actually like the trampoline?
― Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 23 January 2025 20:32 (one year ago)
I think they also don't like anyone in our courtyard having windows after this weekend
― boxedjoy, Thursday, 23 January 2025 20:35 (one year ago)
Yeah, the design flaw in the alert was stupid. I got mine a couple of minutes after my husband, so I left mine there - the alarm stops after a few rings, then a voice reads out the alert for the visually impaired, but yeah, it'd be good to be able to mute the beeping and still read the message
― ailsa, Thursday, 23 January 2025 21:06 (one year ago)
it's sounding very windy already!
― boxedjoy, Friday, 24 January 2025 07:48 (one year ago)
When I woke up this morning around 8am it didn't seem as bad as predicted - but it's really picking up speed now round the Luma Building near Braehead, where I'm WFH.
― Ward Fowler, Friday, 24 January 2025 09:28 (one year ago)
Do you live in the Luma Building?!
― Eyeball Kicks, Friday, 24 January 2025 10:48 (one year ago)
I do! These three rectangular windows are my flat.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/53/Luma_Tower.jpg/1280px-Luma_Tower.jpg
― Ward Fowler, Friday, 24 January 2025 10:56 (one year ago)
Wow! Amazing building from the outside - always been curious how the flats are.
― Eyeball Kicks, Friday, 24 January 2025 11:34 (one year ago)
Bloody windy here in Hamilton and the storm hasnt even hit Scotland yet. Fingers crossed we all come through unscathed.
Loads of local reports of trees blown over and (dont look boxed joy) flying trampolines including one that bounced off cars in hillhouse and is now lodged up a tree!
― Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 24 January 2025 11:49 (one year ago)
Eyeball Kicks, if you ever fancy a look round the Luma - hit me up! Flats are nice but not huge, and parts of the building could do with a good clean - converted into flats in 1996 and not much work done on the exterior since then. But definitely one of the things I love about living in Scotland - could never have afforded a property in a listed building in London.
Just when I think this storm has peaked it seems to go up another gear - wild! You would be truly mad to go out in this at the moment.
― Ward Fowler, Friday, 24 January 2025 12:16 (one year ago)
Its weird knowing the worst is still to come. Stay safe everyone.
― Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 24 January 2025 12:19 (one year ago)
I didn't know you'd moved to the Luma building! The wind is absolutely mental here just the other side of Braehead from you, not seen a single person out in our estate today.
― ailsa, Friday, 24 January 2025 13:44 (one year ago)
I'm working from home and saw a learner driver on the road an hour ago
― boxedjoy, Friday, 24 January 2025 13:45 (one year ago)
I work from home anyway, though work today is mostly people posting pictures of their wrecked fences to our Teams chat
― ailsa, Friday, 24 January 2025 13:54 (one year ago)
Eyeball Kicks, if you ever fancy a look round the Luma - hit me up!
Thanks - might take you up on that! I was creeping around there some time last year taking photographs.
― Eyeball Kicks, Friday, 24 January 2025 14:08 (one year ago)
beautiful building.
my window blew in at 6am (before it even got near peak wind). my neighbour's scaffolding nearly collapsed (police closed road) and next thing there's a load of scaffolding guys on it trying to repair it in 90mph (ish) wind. insanity!
― stirmonster, Friday, 24 January 2025 15:03 (one year ago)
ailsa, I moved from Dennistoun to the Luma about seven years ago (I moved to Scotland in 2006). Still lots of parts of the city and surrounding area I want to explore, including round where you are (I know Paisley a bit). Perhaps…one distant day…we could have a Lanarkshire FAP!
Funny to get a text alert telling me my local Lidl has reopened - we must be through the worst of it!
― Ward Fowler, Friday, 24 January 2025 20:01 (one year ago)
Are the fireworks much much worse this year or am I just imagining it?
― boxedjoy, Wednesday, 5 November 2025 21:00 (five months ago)
It's been going on for weeks. Saturday was really bad here
― Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 5 November 2025 21:18 (five months ago)
At least Rangers lost on Sunday, that's usually its own fireworkfest otherwise.
Think it's the lack of an organised display that's pushing the rogue displays outwards? Or it is just that people are twats?
― ailsa, Thursday, 6 November 2025 00:02 (five months ago)
Does the QMU or any other glasgow music venue require ID to see live bands now? It's been a long time since I was going to music gigs.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Monday, 2 February 2026 01:07 (two months ago)
missed this revive last time! I think QMU requires you to sign in if you're not a student but it's been a good while since I had to go something there without being with my pal who works there
― boxedjoy, Monday, 9 March 2026 20:23 (four weeks ago)
anyway I hope everyone is fairly unaffected by the fire, I don't feel great about the reporting of it as a "tragedy" when there are global wars and genocides happening to comparative media silence, but equally I feel terrible for the business owners and workers who'll suffer because a vape shop couldn't manage their rubbish properly
― boxedjoy, Monday, 9 March 2026 20:25 (four weeks ago)
I went to a gig a couple of years ago at the QM and didn't need anything to get in other than my gig ticket.
I'm curiously unbothered about the fire other than the knock-on effects on businesses and travel. I'm so used to bits of Glasgow being flammable that this isn't really any different to me, but perhaps this is the spur to also finally do something with the Egyptian Halls and stop Union Street being the most depressing place in Glasgow apart from the bit under the Heilanman's Umbrella. That whole area is a total embarrassment next to our main railway station.
― ailsa, Monday, 9 March 2026 21:23 (four weeks ago)
The fire has quite depressed me last night and today. I think part of it is that they are such frequent occurrences, as you say aisla, and this bigger more close to home one makes me think of all the other buildings and bits of history that have been lost.
― brain (krakow), Monday, 9 March 2026 22:30 (four weeks ago)
sorry ailsa, mis-typed your name
― brain (krakow), Monday, 9 March 2026 22:32 (four weeks ago)
i once performed in a play at the QMU lol. my friend came up to me afterwards and said "but you just played yourself" and i was like DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD THAT IS
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 9 March 2026 22:58 (four weeks ago)
Glasgow Central upper level to remain closed until at least the weekend. I have to travel to Birmingham on Friday (lucky me!) so am going via Motherwell (lucky me!).
― Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 10 March 2026 18:45 (four weeks ago)
a member of my family just died so I have to travel to Glasgow soon, trying to figure out the trains and the websites are not being helpful!so are they stopping at Motherwell, or do I go to Edinburgh & across to Queens St?
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Tuesday, 10 March 2026 18:53 (four weeks ago)
Scotrail are surely laying buses on to and from M'well?
― Schlub 7 (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 March 2026 19:08 (four weeks ago)
zappi, yes trains are stopping at Motherwell, I just thought changing there rather than Edinburgh would possibly be less chaotic (I find Edinburgh Waverley a horrible station to navigate at the best of times).
Yeah there probably are buses, as zappi says, 'official' Scotrail communications have not been the clearest at all times.
― Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 10 March 2026 19:30 (four weeks ago)
cheers Ward, I'm understandably not 100% together atm and this was not helping!
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Tuesday, 10 March 2026 19:34 (four weeks ago)
Trains between Motherwell and Glasgow are still running, on a separate line from the trains coming up from England (which go to the main station, Glasgow Central high level).
Up to today, these trains weren't stopping at Glasgow Central low level, just passing through, though you could get off at nearby Argyle Street or Anderston.
From tomorrow, trains will stop at the low level station.
So your journey is relatively simple: get off your train at Motherwell, then take the next train to Balloch or Milngavie (runs every 30 mins), and get off at Glasgow.
― Eyeball Kicks, Tuesday, 10 March 2026 19:48 (four weeks ago)
zappi I'm very sorry for your loss
― boxedjoy, Tuesday, 10 March 2026 20:10 (four weeks ago)
Some local bus companies are accepting rail tickets so depending on your final destination, that may be an alternative option from Motherwell. I'm sorry for your loss.
― ailsa, Tuesday, 10 March 2026 20:24 (four weeks ago)
If you do go to Motherwell then stay away from the lift.
― Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Tuesday, 10 March 2026 21:07 (four weeks ago)
thanks all, it was expected tbh but no matter how many times I've gone thru it the finality hits like a truck - one day you're joking with them on the phone, the next they're just gone :_;
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Tuesday, 10 March 2026 21:19 (four weeks ago)
There’s also the option of changing at Carlisle and getting a cross-country train for anyone who would usually change at Glasgow for another destination. Works out way better than Motherwell if you’re going west.
― Madchen, Tuesday, 10 March 2026 21:42 (four weeks ago)
Though they’re only every couple of hours so you have to time it right.
― Madchen, Tuesday, 10 March 2026 21:44 (four weeks ago)
There is some weird shadiness about the ownership of the vape shop having changed hands two weeks ago, or possibly not: https://www.theferret.scot/revealed-company-behind-vape-shop-fire-had-not-paying-business-rates-or-registered-to-sell-vapes/ - a lot of "it looks dodgy but also everyone involved is skint, including the council"
Sorry for your loss, zappi - if you can get a train through Edinburgh that stops at Haymarket, it's a much more manageable station.
― Andrew Farrell, Sunday, 15 March 2026 09:31 (three weeks ago)
I imagine the vape shop model might be like that of the american candy stores in which a tax/rates bill is run up then the company folds only to be replaced by a "new" company with a different named director but essentially the same business ad nauseum
― conrad, Sunday, 15 March 2026 12:57 (three weeks ago)
