hi everyone, just wrote and lost a whole (coherent) post about this. sorry it's so short, i'm at my new secondment and can't play today, but don't want people to miss this.

democrats abroad is having it's UK caucus on monday. doors open at 6 and you have to be in by 7. you can vote on the door. more info at www.democratsabroad.org.uk. bring your passport.

hope to see some of you there!

(note this is a new venue)
Holiday Inn London Bloomsbury
Coram Street
London
WC1N 1HT

0870 400 9222

Nearest tube: Russell Square (Picadilly Line). Two minute walk. Come out of the station and cross over the zebra crossing (Harts Food Store is on the corner). Continue into Marchmont Street for 2 mins and you will see the Holiday Inn Sign on the wall. Turn Left and you will be in the hotels forecourt / entrance.

Starts at 7:00 pm

(You must arrive before 7:00 to participate -- come early for a snack or drink to avoid transportation delays. Some allowance will be made for those who did not know of the change and went to the old venue first where we will have volunteers.)

Our caucus is where Americans in the UK can vote for the presidential candidate he or she believes should get the Democratic Party's nomination. Through the UK Caucus we will elect delegates, either committed to a candidate or "undeclared", who will represent the UK at our International Caucus which takes place 26-28 March in Edinburgh, Scotland with delegates from around the world. The International Caucus will determine how Democrats Abroad's votes for our party's presidential nomination will be cast at the Democratic National Convention in Boston during late July 2004.

This is guaranteed to be a fun and exciting evening, as the different groups try to broker support for their candidate, especially this year with so many candidates. Some of the candidates will have sent videos to tell us about their positions on various issues and a TV/VCR will be set up to watch whatever we have been sent.

Mark the date in your diary and tell your American friends. We want as many people to be involved as possible and let's make sure George W. gets defeated in 2004!

PLEASE NOTE: Participation is open to all Americans resident in the UK who will be of voting age for the November election and who are registered Democrats (you can register on the evening). As a security measure, we will need to check passports upon entry, so please bring yours with you.

I'm not sure what I think about expats being allowed to vote. The Tory party tried a big push a few years ago, I think. Maybe it's OK. Are Republicans Abroad as big a group as Democrats abroad? I never seem to hear about them.

dems abroad are recognized by the party and the worldwide body acts as a 51st state. the UK caucus is recognized as a 'county level' primary, which feeds into the international caucus in march.

expats are guaranteed their right to vote for life, unless they renounce their citizenship officially. we're still liable for taxes, so why shouldn't we be able to vote?

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

and republicans abroad isn't recognized by the GOP as a branch of the party, it is primarily a fundraising group.

Mmmm... think of all those valuable tax exile votes.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I guess the tax thing is a good point. I don't know if British expats are in the same position. I just think it's an odd one, when you might not have lived in the country for years.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Are American expats relatively more likely to be the Democrats than Republicans, do you think?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Extreme example - if I left the country because the Great British Public elected a BNP government, I would value my vote to try and get them out at the next opportunity regardless of whether they were living.

Whether or not Bush is in the White House in just over a year affects the lives of Americans regardless of where they're living (actually, it affects pretty much everyone in the world to some degree - can we all have a vote please?)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

What a terrific idea.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

In fact, if *all* national elections had to be open to the entire planet we might have world peace!

I hereby stand for the presidency of Djibouti... who's with me?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

My wife didn't go on holiday there.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

She was afraid of Matt DC's reign of terror.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Djibouti really should have a "my wife went to" joke, but I really can't think of one

chris (chris), Thursday, 5 February 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)
