this has sort of been asked before i imagine but....

what 'real-life' friendships are there in IL* ie people that see each other, go to the pub, know each other etc here? who knos who, in other words?

eg: i live two streets away from ed and see gareth every so often when i am down south. i know no one else (depending on what 'to know' is)

ambrose, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, where to begin. ;-) My current local circle of friends doesn't dwell on the boards aside from the occasional post, but beyond that:

Brian Macdonald -- friend of mine since 1992 when we met at UC Irvine in Southern California; housemates from 1997 until earlier this year when he moved to Seattle

Nicole -- been in touch with each other since 1997, hung around in visits three separate times, hurrah!

Tom Ewing, Pete, Tim Hopkins, Sarah, Carsmile Steve, DG, Emma, Lixi and others -- folks I've met up with whenever I've visited the UK

Ally, Kris, Otis, Sterling -- had the chance to meet them all once directly in various locations

Fred, Dan Perry, Mike Daddino -- like many of the above, long-time net friends, but never had the chance to meet them yet face to face

...and so forth. I have to say I like the sound of the Aussie/NZ contingent as a whole and have threatened a visit there sometime next year or possibly soon after that.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm too modest to answer this.

DG, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't know that I will but until I can find me, some ILE posters who'll stay and wont play games behind me, I'll be what I am, a Solitary Man.

Johnny Cash always says it best.

Ronan, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've known Chris Brown for what must be nearly 10 years now. I think describing him as a friend might be pushing it though ;)

Jonnie, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Would 'fellow polar bear' be more apt?

Madchen, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He's more of a Grizzly in my eyes.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I only know the ILE'er I sleep with.

Samantha, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've known Katie for six years and we live in the same flat. I help Paul run Strange Fruit. I've got very drunk with Starry, been to gigs with Kate StC and the theatre with DG. I think I've met/been down the pub with/seen at Sussed/Strange Fruit most of the London and Oxford based posters with the exception of James, Dave Q and Trevor.

RickyT, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Me and Otis go way back in the way back machine. Or at least since like March or maybe February, something like that. He's the bomb, he comes stay at my apartment and makes weird "just in the neighborhood" (he lives in Mass.) stops by my place to take out my roommate to dinner. He helped me celebrate my 21st in style, cowboy. Also he inadvertantly introduced me to my fiance. I have also met Ned, as he said above, only once but I feel like I know him way better than that so if he lived in NYC we'd go down the pub and all, I mean we've known each other like 5 years now. Ian White has stayed at my apartment two weekends now, he's a top guy as well. I've been to Tracer Hand's apartment at least twice and he brought me and my roommate to a club in Brooklyn once, which was pretty fun. He looks like the guy in Josie and the Pussycats who isn't the boyfriend or Alan Cummings. Dan Perry showed me, Otis and Steph around Boston (while I terrified his wife burning an extremely surly Ramon with cigarettes and rolling around drunk - sorry again for that) AND came out with me to a lovely dinner at Santa Fe in NYC. I met Jimmy the Mod and Sterling Clover, proving they aren't the same person. On that same day I also met Sundar, who talked to me about Joy Division, bnw who is quiet but very cute and...oh fuck, who am I leaving out? Am I leaving out someone? I'm sure I am. Oh well. WHo was at the infamous Potion Lounge night? Dave and Paul. They were top, my recollection of that night/weekend is pretty centered on other things though. David Raposa met up with me in Boston and took me to a club, which was interesting cos I hated all the people at the club, but it was a nice club so I felt bad for it, and then he listened patiently to me bitch about how much Boston sucks. I also know Fred Solinger quite well but let's leave that at that.

ALly, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(I really only hang out with Otis often though)

(because I can pay him and Ramon to steal flags and set shit on fire)

Ally, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

so alone, sooooooooo aloooooooooooooooooone!

jess, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I guess you've just been lucky so far, Ricky! By the way, is anyone else going to see the awesome Beachbuggy and French Kicks at the Garage on Friday? A 14 wheeler couldn't drag me away.

Trevor, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jess you have your legions of bitches and hos to keep you company. I don't know what you're worried about.

Ronan, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Every time I try to answer this I feel I'm leaving people out and get paranoid. So I won't. I know lots of people who post here.

Jess - you're in Philly, no? I know there are grate ILE people there. You should meet them!

Tom, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh yeah Ronan's right, you're too busy. Sorry.

Tom, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you bastards.

(now, if you'll excuse me, i have a smoking jacket fitting at 1.)

jess, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i've never met anyone. come to athens you bastards, we have a 'scene' and i have a futon. i think i'm only about 800 miles from hanley, actually. i should do a 'just in the neighbourhood' visit.

ethan, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nope, not met any of ya...I plan to attend a get-together thing at some stage...you never know, though you may have seen me in a record or comic shop or a show. Though I've only been to a few shows this year...Low at Sheps B, J Mascis at Sheps B, Malkmus at Sheps B, Quo/Beach Boys at Hyde Park.

james, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have never met anyone on this list. Maybe that's why I feel I am an intruder?

Helen Fordsdale, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You might be an intruder but I will continue to feel smug as long as nobody else points out where your nick is from and I feel like I'm the only one who knows.

(Unless it's your actual name in which case doubly cool)

Actually I really like the influx of new posters we've had lately - yay for Helen F Toraneko and the entire population of Dunedin.

Tom, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think we should annex Dunedin forcibly and colonize it with free Internet cafes and the like so all may join in. Oh yes.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

real names are from venus, but nicknames…?

mark s, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Obviously I knew Mark S. knew but he doesn't count.

Tom, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know too, but only after googling it because it seemed really familiar.

RickyT, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Back to the topic of conversation, please. I hate the spotlight, you guys.

Helen Fordsdale, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, Mark, MARS. Now shuddup. :-)

Helen Fordsdale, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I haven't met anyone either. Am I right in that London=main concentration of people?

Maria, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For the moment London, but I think Dunedin is about to overtake at this rate.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i still don't believe any of you are real -- it's all just strings of characters on a bulletin board. my, ahem, real friends share some of the same goofiness as on this board, but not the musical interests. except my ex who doesn't count, and I don't want to talk about :-(

, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You sound like me. Actually, I'm willing to talk about my ex, I just think people got tired of listening.

Sean, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The only person I know who posts here is Matthew James who doesn't post a great deal but does sit next to me during one of my modules at Kingston Polytechnic.

I'm sure I've probably seen other people about whilst out and about, hitting the town and so forth, just without realising it. In fact I'm sure I have because sometimes people talk about places I've been.

Just think, that stranger standing next to you at the bar could be me...

jamesmichaelward, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Who is part of the Australian contingent?

Mascara, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

does dunedin rhyme with london?

ethan, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Where the hell is dunedin? Ethan are you and I the only ILEers in the South?

Sam-at-home, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*CORRECTION FOR RICKY T* You have seen Dave Q, as have I and a few others, those that were at Everett True's book launch.

DG, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Overrated: Everett True

Oh wait. . .that's a different thread. . .

Sam-at-home, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Duane went on ILE first because he went to I Love Music because he loves music. Then it goes: Duane knows Maryann, Di, Hamish. Di is friends with Menelaus Darcy and some people who post under pseudonyms. Elizabeth Anne is Hamish's girlfriend. All these people are friends with each other. Maryann and Rainy are best friends, but Rainy doesn't know Menelaus or Elizabeth Anne. She's met Hamish and Di. Chasimino knows Matt Couch. Rainy and Maryann know Chasimino but they aren't friends with her. And Dunedin is not in Australia. It is in AUSTRIA.

rainy and maryann, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What does Dave Q look like?

satan's donkey, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I also know Duane. One time me and Maryann and him went for a drive and we had ice creams. It was nice.

rainy, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

rainy, are you in austria?

Sam-at-home, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've never met any of you and it doesnt look like I will any time soon either. Though I have put up with Peter Holstrom worship for four or five years and hijacked many a mailing list gushing about Sloan with Kate.

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mr. Noodles, why oh why would you want to do that?

Sam-at-home, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So do you all you, ahem, Austrians know Chris Knox?

After a show of his I saw a few years ago, he threatened to lick my face.

Brian MacDonald, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Funny - Chris Knox did a similar thing when I saw him. He also answered a fan's call for "Not Given Lightly" by making up unflattering impromptu lyrics about staying in said fan's trailer once upon a time. He also signed my CD booklet and playfully mussed my hair. I love Chris Knox. He's my friend.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DQ looks like...well, I don't really remember, I didn't know he was DQ at the time, I only found out when he confessed what question he asked, either here or on ILM, I forget. Longish hair though. Possibly.

DG, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

rainy, are you in Austria?

Why, yes, of course. It's really nice, and when is rains Chris Knox lends me his gumboots. (or "galoshes")

rainy, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

so he has one of those forgettable faces? sounds like a mysterious spy to me. or a brown dog.

satan's donkey, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Haven't met anyone. The dude lying nearby on the couch has posted on ILM once or twice when I made him, but then I stopped that when he embarassed me by only talking about nothing but old Genesis and Robert Fripp. That bastard. I'd invite my Toronto friends here and all, but they're not big on typing their conversations... We ought to have a thread for all us ILE loners to hang out and bond or whine about being unloved or whatever.... you know, I totally forgot to tell the story about how while I was at that scary karaoke last friday, I was trying to bribe my dad twenty bucks to get up and do Bootylicious. I mean, if you knew my dad, really, it's the funniest thing ever...

Kim, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i've never met anyone called rainy.

hamish, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I had forgotten about Dave Q at the book launch but I don't think it really counts as we didn't actually talk to him.

Ambrose, I haven't met you but I think we might have a friend in common. If you are the Ambrose that Noel Gardner knows, that is.

RickyT, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes, I have known the waif like polar bear that is Jonnie5 for nearly ten years, since the halcyon days of the hothouse.

Then I have met most of the London and Oxford bunch, but I missed Ned when he came over due to skintness.

chris, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i have met you all in my dreams

mark s, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

really? what did i look like mark?

jess, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

very tall and broad but with a teenytiny head

anthony was also small, a fiercely diligent goblin atop a tapering high chair

dave q rescued me from a petting zoo: he had sensible glasses and a tight black polo neck

mark s, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

maryann & di are my freinds. i like hamish n00nan & liz kane & rainy & vseprt@xtra.co.nz & menelaus darcy but i never hang out with them 'cause they are too cool for me.

duane, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that's here in dunedin. cameron bain & jon bywater are my freinds & they live in london (cameron) & auckland (jon). & there's some other people i know & like that turn up here sometimes too.

duane, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Duane I am not too cool for anyone - everyone knows I am the least cool thing on the whole internet. What about that time you and me and maryann went driving and got ice creams? Did that mean nothing to you?

rainy, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

duane is a close friend. menelaus and i go to the pub together a lot at the mo. vseprt is a close friend, and is also a bandmate of mine. hamish and liz i have met a couple of times, but i think i know them better in cyberspace than in real life. maryann and i are attempting to forge something of a friendship, despite difficult circumstances. i have not met rainy.

di, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

is that all I am Di? A booze hag? :)

Menelaus Darcy, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Di, we were introduced to one another by Maryann once at Arc.

rainy, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah I was just being sarcastic to try & hurt yr feelings Rainy! I'm such a prick! TOO COOL FOR YOU, NERD!

mean d., Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

damn i just noticed i spelt freind (sic) wrong, damn!

duane, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*adjusts standard issue nerd spectacles, looks confused, cries*

rainy, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I remember seeing maryann with someone who I assumed was you at arc one day. but i am sure maryann never formally introduced us. but then, my memory is shot from smoking too much weed when i was 18.

Oh menelaus, there is so much more to our friendship than liquor. for example, the internet.

di, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Let no-one say that we don't have lives! This weekend has been a whirlwind of social activity, and we are clearly some of the most recognised and revered denizens of Dunners.

Menelaus Darcy, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

its hard when EVERYONE wants a piece of us, eh mene?

socialbutterfly, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

damn right, I beleive we dont so much go out as preside. They love us.

should I have said fucken' eh?

Menelaus Darcy, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fuckin eh man.

di, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned, you wouldn't want the whole of dunedin posting on ILE. We truly are the cream of the crop. (or is it the cream of the crap?)

Rainy is telling the truth, dunedin is in Austria. If you don't believe it, just see Menelaus' thread on Lederhosen.

Ned you should come to dunedin. Everyone should! We are going to have an ILE bbq sometime, at duane's house, you should all come.

di, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

then we could all have our love-in! make tofu sausages, not war.

di, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

nuts to your tofu sausages or do you really want my industrial quantities lentil burgers recipe, (there very good you know)

Ed, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm and un cultured oaf that should have been: they're very good you know

Ed, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I believe the expression is "fuckin' A". short for ace, or maybe arse.

eh is like a verbal fullstop or question mark on a sentence so it makes conversation longer.

I think I know some ppl on here.

mr smythe, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hamish do you have Irish relations?

N00nan is my mothers maiden name.

Er.....just so you know.

Ronan, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned you should come to dunedin. Everyone should!

I would very much love to come visit. Right now next June I am planning on going to Europe for a month -- Spain, Italy, southern France -- but should that fall through (I'm planning on going with a couple of other people and we're still working out the details), then I'm off to Australia and NZ. I know it'll be winter in your neck of the woods then, but it's the best time for me to make a jaunt, at the least. Anyway, if next summer doesn't happen, then either December next year or summer 2003 will be my visit time to the Antipodes. Hopefully Dunedin will still be cool. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah Ronan, i'm of Irish descent but i don't have any living relatives who've ever lived there. Probably come over there next year because of the lax entry conditions for working in their IT industry.

hamish, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In 2003, Wellington will be HOT, Dunedin will be NOT.

satan's donkey, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am content to make my jaunt to NZ a moveable feast.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
